lifting is just balatro for calorie burning like, sure, you can run for an hour and burn one oreo worth but you really need some mult in there. you want to burn calories while you sleep. while you're at work. just sitting there every pound of muscle is an extra joker adding chips to the fire

there's no such thing as a rogue agent man its software someone made and deployed they are responsible for what it does cannot let this blame shifting occur

There are immense accessibility benefits. The misuse and abuse of technology is a huge problem, but that shouldn't stop us from building technology for accessibility. There's no easy answers to abuse v moderation, but companies like Meta should act more responsibly.

Kind of surprised that we are not seeing more radical political ideas built around AI capabilities, the way that early mass industrialization was a prime motivator in the conceptions of capitalism, communism, and socialism.

“Cancer is keeping us safe from some unknowable, even worse fate” is a great lovecraftian plot point but not something anyone should say seriously

whatever the capabilities of the tech, the fact is you've essentially got bankers -- who already have a tendency to take insane risks and crash the markets when they're paying attention -- putting a brick on the gas pedal while they go on smoko. im sure no cars will go over cliffs

i am 100% serious whenever i say you should refuse to use a linux distribution that is not using AI in its development at this point. good on debian here.

I understand the complaints about AI on bsky but there's a legitimate question on why "ai discussion on bsky where there's starter packs and anti-ai blocklists are available" is too hard but "ai discussion on a site flooded with actual nazis" isn't.

If I were feeling particularly uncharitable — which i do sometimes — I would say that the reason AI is so virulently controversial in the US in particular is because AI demands a level of active engagement and tinkering that conflicts with our desire to be passive consumers of custom goods.

being right about crypto and NFTs has made a lot of people far too confident in their judgment. they think the presence of hype means the absence of substance. but crypto was unusual in that it was all hype and almost no substance. every other tech wave is a tougher mix of hype and substance

HotlineInput reposted

Crypto's basic problem is that the premise is optimistic but the incentives are for ultra scumbag behavior. So all public messaging is functionally done by MLM schemers because that's who you end up interacting with and the people that build the stack evaporate as they get sick of dealing with them.

It is really striking how incredibly American-centric the discourse around this stuff is. Like there’s literally an entire world out there that’s also building data centers, training models, etc and people are still acting like how white collar Americans feel is all that matters.

it's honestly insane to see the difference between how AI was presented to English-speakers versus how it was presented to non-English speakers. The less you speak English, the more likely you are to have a positive view on AI. It's quite stark! www.scmp.com/economy/chin...

For those who don’t follow video games, there is constant policing of any AI use among small, indie developers. They are the most resource constrained firms in a field where profits are rare & artistic vision is often compromised, but they are punished more harshly than big devs by their audience.

Been about a year now of a lot of people hating my guts but absolutely no one sitting down to try to write a general overview of exactly where data centers are harming water access or land or other issues I write about. Surely if I'm lying all the time it'd be easy

Hot take: I think the fact that the website I'm visiting has to show me the 600 partners it's about to send my data to and has to give me a way to opt out of all that is a good thing, actually, even if it's an extra click for me

Don't go around suspecting everything may be using AI. If you look for ai in every image, then all you will find is ai images. Don't use those sites that check for it, they give too many false positives. Use your eyes and brain, think through the process.

HotlineInput reposted

I feel like if you actively promote destroying technological infrastructure, calling yourself a ‘progressive’ is a bit misleading.

HotlineInput reposted

the way people say "you can't take credit for your ai's work" as like, this damning thing as if they cannot imagine caring more that a thing occur than that it be theirs to claim i never really intended 'credit', everything that happens on the computer is instrumental

HotlineInput reposted

I find arguments that AI can't do judgement or creativity or taste to be especially obviously false in the time of agents. Any long task requires lots of taste, judgement & creativity. I am much more sympathetic to arguments about the quality or diversity of the AI's taste, judgement, or creativity

i’ve noticed that a huge number of Ed Zitron followers are actually great people who just got the wrong info a lot of them happily will change their mind given new info i really wish people here would dial back the distain and just focus on information dissemination

not only are the advice/aita/etc subreddits all LLM slop now, they were previously slop by people who were either hand-writing bait OR filtered meticulously by mod queue for being dramatic, but in an entertaining and not ugly way

Fantastic series.

I've been rewatching The Good Place and their treatment of Janet is really, really prescient about agents. She's a superintelligent android? who can be rebooted and have her memories wiped; at which point the guy from Florida falls in love with her and they get married.
