I love how all these "how to write with AI" things start from the premise that the product is the purpose of the assignment. I promise you, there is no shortage of shitty student essays. The purpose is the process, to train specific cognitive skills. The product is a goal to help shape the process.

"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt." Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn? MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2

I am going to have to ask a bunch of pointed questions at the faculty meeting today and I would like to just stab myself in the neck instead, so I never had to think about any of this ever again.

My hottest AI take is that the executive class is petrified of labor and saw that whatever else LLMs are/aren't, they're fine labor-smashers + that a ton of ordinary people find the artificial hyper-complexity and scamminess of modern life and work so unbearable that they'll throw a god-box at it.

I'm not a basketball fan in any way, but the idea that a Championship Game wouldn't take precedent over a regular season game is so ludicrous, it's obviously only happening for one fucking reason, and it's as the article states: "so that men aren’t inconvenienced."

It's so easy to get exhausted and cynical with digital creation at this juncture, where obscure and terrible machines dominate the professional process. It's nice to recall that sense of achievement in getting the thing in your head to appear on the screen, and to do so by working through a process.

Taught my first coding class since the AI era this evening - good old fashioned manual HTML & CSS. And they loved it! (Well, okay, were bewildered(!) at first, but enjoyed the challenge and satisfaction of seeing the system respond so directly to their inputs). Really heartening 🙂

What if we just let human experts do the work they are trained to do, rather than encourage developing technological dependencies on automation systems incapable of actually completing tasks that depend on expert judgment and understanding? You know, like the workforce you ostensibly represent

Biased AI prompts are being used to remove books from schools. But what if AI is used to evaluate whether a book meets the educational needs of students? https://bit.ly/4kfx5rp

The backlog crisis, the overwork crisis, the burnout crisis- all of these are consequences of the devaluation and defunding of labour. Automation is not the solution to them.

The chapter on toxic fandoms is Chapter 10, "The Empire Must Be Defended", built around an analysis of the new Star Wars trilogy, the next chapter "Wakanda Forever" shows how Black Panther's reactionary narrative couldn't keep its imagery from being important to movement, at least for a few months!

Liberatory energies and movements do emerge from and make use of fandoms and their images (e.g: Black Panther in 2018, John Boyega's speech in 2020, or the Hunger Games salute in Thailand protests) but these uses are contingent and easily subsumed back into more disciplinary fan modes

Organized fandoms act as volunteer pinkertons, and while the creeps enforcing fascist visions are in actuality a tiny minority of most fandoms, loving a of particular franchise/character produces a political ambivalence that often leans towards compliance with corporate aims over artistic ones
