So fucking upset that I spent half a year or so working 80-90 hour weeks primarily to get Lisa Brown elected to congress. I was in meetings with her every other week, I know she's been to protests before, I know she knows how this works. Utterly despicable

Cops don’t keep us safe. We keep us safe. Pedestrian plazas and bustling green spaces and eyes on the street and community and neighbors who care about us keep us safe. Fun places for kids to hang out all over the city and summer jobs for teens serving the public keep us safe.

I cannot emphasize enough how this city, like major metro, is functionally occupied by an organized crime protection racket. Cops do not exist to help you. They're here to extort you. Until and unless we can hire and fire our public safety folks at will, we'll never have public safety.

I'm a uniter. Seriously though, it is cool to see how many folks are coming together around preserving our bus service

This gif has one middle finger for each spokane millionaire that threw away 100 grand to try and cut Spokane transit. Sorry, Spokane loves the bus

Inviting any president to an active disaster is going to put even more strain on local emergency services, shut down air space and roads for security and make it harder for firefighters and other responders to do their jobs. Inviting this particular one even more so.

And that's setting aside the insult of inviting this fascist while ICE and DHS are engaging in ethnic cleansing, and community leaders are facing federal prison time over political prosecutions.

people with chronic pain warned us at the time but the criminalization of women and minority people’s pain after the opioid crisis is a public health disaster. I’ve had friends denied pain management after hysterectomies, dental extractions and broken bones.

After my c-section, I asked my ObGYN what care at home would look like and what sort of painkiller I'd be prescribed (so my husband could pick it up) and he said OTC Tylenol because by asking, I was "exhibiting drug seeking behavior."

NLETS is a 50 year old data-sharing system that connects law enforcement databases nationally, allowing ICE/CBP to access WA DOL data. In WA, officials have taken some action to cut off access to Nlets for some federal immigration agents, yet the number of searches—and arrests—continue to grow.

Well shit. That's really fucking sad. Arson is the worst answer to the question of what caused this. Study after study shows people with mental illness are far more likely to be the victim of a violent crime than commit one. Further criminalization of mental illness is not the answer.

Also, the calls for state (and non state) violence towards this person are really upsetting. Have heard calls for this person's death in person around town and seen them online even before the confession came out. Whole thing is heartbreaking from all angles

Keep starting to write a post about election results but with *gestures at everything* I can't find the right words

Voting is insufficient but important. Electoral activism is insufficient but important. It was nice and weird and surreal being an electoral organizer again for a while. Who knows, maybe I'll do it again

Maybe I'll have more to say later, how I'm feeling right now - election results were mixed. I'm glad it seems like transit is heading for a win barring some pretty major shifts. Spokane kinda has more pressing shit going on right now though.

Fixing the problems we face requires more action in community than just voting, but I believe they also require voting, especially in primaries and local elections.

Sometimes people do really awful things. It is entirely possible that these fires were started exactly as the Spokane County sherrif alleges. All the evidence that has been shown so far, however, is very circumstantial.

This person's history is also not evidence. He was contacted about fires last year but never charged, let alone arrested or convicted. His manslaughter conviction while awful and disturbing is also not evidence for this case. Again people do sometimes do really awful things. He may well be guilty

But for now he is innocent until proven guilty. I'm gonna stay skeptical of the county sherrif because they have more than earned our skepticism. Spokane and the surrounding area are going through it we are all in a daze. We must resist the urge to place blame without evidence.

An arrest is not a conviction. Having matches and a lighter and being seen in the vicinity of where a fire started is not nearly enough to convict this person. I basically always have a lighter and cigarettes on me. A lot of people do.

Happy day off to all election campaign workers in WA, especially those whose races are within the margin of error. Take the day off cause it is out of your hands now. You did the work now you just gotta wait for the count.

Hang in there.

Have been up since 4am, in the ER for a family emergency and I haven't had more than half a cup of coffee. Also still haven't figured out what the medical problem is. Today can bite me.

this afternoon i filed a story on a geo group-run ICE detention complex in southeast georgia. aside from the reporting, which took me in some wild directions, my biggest takeaway is that closing a jail or prison is not enough. the buildings themselves have to be repurposed so they cannot be refilled

Kiddo was up all night last night stressed about the fires. Really grateful that he is able to keep seeing the school counselor over the summer and has a conveniently scheduled appointment this morning

Spokane is having a VERY bad day. Every time I check, the situation is worse; multiple fires are affecting the city. I don't want to speculate, but I see little hope homes haven't been lost. If you're in a GO NOW zone, GET THE HELL OUT If you're are NEAR a GO NOW area, GET THE HELL OUT #WAfire
