Good morning! We are a newly formed grassroots groups of environmental experts & advocates who love cities, nature, & people. We want to build a fun & collaborative community of environmentalists who love trees and orcas just as much as they love busses, bike lanes, and walkable communities.

Because making these walkable third spaces isn’t just about my wanting more places to get coffee and ice cream and a sandwich (although…) Walkable neighborhoods emit less carbon, and send less toxic runoff to poison salmon. They create connections for kids who don’t drive and seniors who stopped.

The let everyone be independent. They help neighbors meet and care for neighbors. They give people a new income source. Corner stores and cozy retail like this are how cities have grown since the idea of a city was invented. It’s part of a process of succession as natural as meadow becoming forest.

A hundred years ago, exclusionary zoning disrupted that natural process. Across America, people are going to older cities here or in Europe, and discovering that walkable, cheery, friendly neighborhoods need retail. And are rewriting city rules to allow this fundamentally human process to resume.

Plant a tree. Vote. Revolt against the oligarchy. Not necessarily in that order, but vote before November 3 for sure.

Bill McKibben@billmckibben.bsky.social

Not an exaggeration to say that elections in the next twelve days will have a huge effect on how many trees survive on our planet, and what its atmosphere is composed of. billmckibben.substack.com/p/elections-...

Ecology has released a set of proposed regulations that are comprehensive and a step in the right direction, but we need them to do MORE to improve regulations and protect our shorelines. 📢 Make a comment by Nov. 16! Learn more more & find key talking points in our blog post. ⤵️ 2/2

Update: I was wrong, there will be a special council meeting on Monday to approve Saka's traffic safety bill and Bob Kettle will be putting forward an amendment to strip out the historic district provisions. Someone tipped off the preservation folks about this so they had more time to organize.

SDOT has a great map here that lets you see which neighborhoods are planning Halloween night street closures; currently there are a lot in North Seattle and none showing on the map in the Rainier Valley.

Many of the groups are just websites run by Share the Cities, the group run by a person who ignored my questions about this yesterday and blocked me. The one site that includes actual, listed human beings is this one, though I'd hesitate to say all the people listed worked on the cheat sheet.

We propose a little bus like the Golden Garden shuttle that would run from Northgate Station up into Carkeek Park, stopping at the picnic area, then the restrooms, then the lower park. Same-ish hours as GG shuttle in the summer, then every Fri-Sun during salmon season (November at least!).

We really wish there was a bus into the heart of Carkeek Park where the salmon are. If planners are unsure of where to place the bus stops, they can always default to where the disabled parking spots are! The distance from the current bus stops to these parking spots is the gap we must close.

Park Oriented Development needs to be a huge philosophy here in Seattle. Increase access to our parks with density, and transit to accompany it. Jackson Park could be Seattle's mini Central Park! New neighborhoods all around!
