Just a little grey duck in a big grey world. He/him. (Not to be mistaken for ho/hum.) If I have a "main topic" it's the game #Satisfactory. My main textual output is (or should be, if I'm behaving myself) over at my not-a-blog: https://greyduck.net

Regular reminder that when you go to things while sick, you are giving those germs to people with autoimmune disorders, you’re passing them to someone’s newborn, to someone’s elderly parents. It’s “just a cold” to you but it can and does severely impact countless people.
I am b e g g i n g people to mask up at major cons, *especially* ones with 5-digit crowd sizes!! Lightbox this weekend was absolutely ravaged; I’m hearing of SO many attendees and exhibitors who got sick from doing the show this year!! Please stay safe out there! 🙏 🙏
A spontaneous computer reboot this morning only delayed, not prevented, my weekly #Satisfactory update post. This week: Manually mapping the randomized node placements is OUT, placing tall expensive Radar Towers is IN.
@polyphonic.nebula.tv My respect levels for ELO went up (and my bafflement at certain nutbars reached new heights) watching the latest video on Nebula. Maybe I need to get into ELO at some point.

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more
Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Yesterday's #Satisfactory co-op session, in which we finally turn parts of the nuclear power plant on, is now archived on YouTube! www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfCc...
Right off the bat, a near-callback to the "Brain Guy, in the interests of peace... smell yourself" bit. Ah, the classics. This should perk my day right up!
MST3K: The RiffTrax Experiments ep. 2 is DEATHSPORT and it'll be available for purchase tomorrow, Friday Oct. 23! IF you're a Kickstarter backer, you (hopefully) just got it. Check your mail! Hope you enjoy.

Summer Realm Book 1: $2.99/£1.99 “Oh, & one more thing!” called Wren. He turned his head. “What attacked? What are you running away from?” He leaned towards her, careful not to speak too loud as his group joined him. “Cockatrices. Hundreds of them!” mybook.to/SummerRealm #BookSky #Fantasy 💙📚👀🪐

I wouldn't go on BBC and proudly state that I'm incompetent at my job, but I also don't have the unearned self confidence of a mediocre white dude. If you're working in tech press and you don't know what PHP is, you should be fired, full stop.
Maybe the BBC should get someone who actually knows what he is talking about then.

If you're a Ubuntu webserver admin like myself (not that myself is someone you should strive to be like, I suppose) you will probably want to follow the linked README and also do a 'sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ondrej/php' once you're on the new Sury repo. Then get your updated PHP packages.

a cool thing about indie animation is that it's expected to save the entire industry, every show has to look better than the things the fans grew up on or it's a waste of time, there's no union to be found anywhere, no budget for any of it, and asking the audience to pay anything to watch is illegal
This, this, this, this, this.
From everything I've seen, an LLM is a combination of a search engine, autocomplete, and mansplainer. It throws together the first information it finds and presents that as fact. The only way it's even close to being human is it has a techbro's irritating habit of being confidently wrong.

I really don't think folks who weren't there grasp just how much these generations really were shamed or even prosecuted for stuff that giant companies do all the time now like ffs, websites used to shame people for 𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 images without paying the site that hosted it for their bandwidth!

"AI" detectors are, themselves "AI". When you feed a work into it, you're feeding it into the training database without permission of the creator. They work on one of two principles, both of which contain an incredibly high rate of false positives.
What chills me more is that the Atlantic article's author not only scanned Kundieza's work, but also scanned 25 years' worth of Caine Prize awardees to check whether they were human. A prize for African writers. It feels like the literary equivalent of doing a non-consensual genital check.
This is my favorite all-new anime (not continuation or remake) of the season so far and nothing else even comes close.
Nia Liston: The Merciless Maiden – Episode 1 Good plot abounds in a premiere about a four year getting a second chance at life when a bloodthirsty hero's soul inhabits her body.... https://www.animefeminist.com/nia-liston-the-merciless-maiden-episode-1/
