I need some help voting this year. Do I vote for Ken Calvert or Young Kim? They’re both awful, but which one is less awful? I do appreciate Ken Calvert; he’s the reason my dad is a Democrat. The fact he’s so awful it caused my dad to switch parties in the ‘90s isn’t exactly an endorsement.

There are also 17 judges up for election in Orange County. These should not be elected positions. There is no information out there about any of these judges. How are voters expected to make an informed decision?

Also, in a very controversial decision, my voting on propositions this year is going to perfectly match the endorsements of the California Democratic Party.

This is an engineering problem, not an enforcement problem. If that many people are speeding, the road is designed to comfortably drive that fast. If Malibu really wants to slow down drivers, it needs to redesign the road to make drivers’ natural speed slower.

Literally the only thing missing here is to ensure that there are interesting and useful places within a short walk. Stores, restaurants, bars, transportation options, and jobs. This is the neighborhood I want to live in.

This urban planning stuff is easy: make the street kinda skinny so drivers chill out, get rid of the front yards, let the houses touch, plant some trees on the sidewalks, and stripe a bike lane. Do all that, wait 25 years for everything to wear in a bit and boom: you have a pleasant neighborhood.

This year’s Vuelta showed just how dominant Tadej has become. The racing was reminiscent of a decade ago since his crash on Stage 8. Breakaways getting five+ minute gaps & staying away all day. GC fights only on the last mountain. This isn’t how modern racing due to Tadej’s strength & UAE’s tactics.

With the transit center directly in the middle, there's no reason other than car brain why this can't be a world-class destination instead of a deadbeat wasteland. Much of the parking needs to be high density use to bring it closer to how cool a ballpark should be (Padres, Cubs, etc.)

This is wonderful news for the City of Anaheim. I have no doubt the high purchase price had as much to do with the potential to develop the stadium property as it was about the value of the Angels themselves. It'll provide a clean slate from all of the misdeeds of Arte Moreno & past Anaheim leaders.

latimes.comRams owner Stan Kroenke agrees to buy Angels, ending Arte Moreno's troubled tenureRams owner Stan Kroenke has agreed to purchase the Angels, marking the end of owner Arte Moreno's tenure and Kroenke's first move into Major League Baseball.

Given Kroenke's success at Hollywood Park, with SoFi and the surrounding development, I have to imagine he's looking to do something similar in Anaheim. With the passage of the Home Run for Anaheim Act last week, the field is set to maximize the development of the stadium property.

latimes.comGov. Gavin Newsom signed the 'Anaheim Angels' bill into law. What it means for the teamThe law does not mandate the Angels revert to the Anaheim Angels name. But it does provides the city with an incentive to dangle before the team.

It will be great to extend the type of walkable urban development OC Vibe is currently creating all the way to Orangewood and State College. Anaheim has failed miserably in creating walkable urbanism in the Platinum Triangle, but this is an opportunity to create a true walkable core for the area.

Ever wondered if the filament you're printing will stick to the build plate you're using? Every time someone tests this, it stays in their head. What if instead, we shared standard test results? willitstick.fyi is my attempt at community science for plate/bed adhesion. #3dprinting

California housing folks, does HCD have a consolidated list of housing element sites? Their website says they have a map, but it's really just a map of surplus sites. I want to map all of the identified housing sites from every city's housing element across a county or region.

Phil Liggett needs to retire from @nbc-sports.bsky.social. It was bad enough during the men’s TdF, but it’s so much worse during the TdF Femmes. He doesn’t know the name of the race or anything about the riders other than how they relate to the men’s peloton. It’s far past time he retire.

I picked up some new pieces of “art” over the weekend. I’ve given them backstories. These are portraits painted in the 1980s of son and grandson of the TailSpin version of Shere Khan. They might be the most ridiculous things I own now.

This was incredibly long (blog post & thread, both), but a worthwhile read if you’re dealing with AI slop at work. Increasingly, I’m finding folks completely offloading their thinking to AI, generating documents & plans without any critical thought of their own. Universally, the work is nonsensical.

Suresh reports on his experience talking with hundreds of executives (and, more importantly, their subordinates) about what (if anything) AI is doing for business in an essay entitled "AI Mania Is Eviscerating Global Decisionmaking": hermit-tech.com/blog/ai-mani... 11/

Whenever someone sends me AI-generated work, it always increases my workload at least 2x. However, the biggest problem is that they’re completely incapable of discussing their work as I try to make heads or tails of it, largely because they didn’t do the work in the first place.

1/3% of all residents of the City of Los Angeles are currently in line to borrow Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey from the LA Public Library. Who says movies dissuade people from reading?

What’s missing here is that we still need subsidized housing. There are some people who will never be able to afford housing, no matter how much is built. Market rate housing should be affordable to people way down the income spectrum, but it’ll never be affordable to everyone.

A lot of people in housing policy and subsidized Affordable Housing finance spaces simply do not believe that markets can work to benefit poor and working people. The best available data proves them wrong: market rate housing construction benefits everyone, including the poor.

For the past couple of years, I've been working to set up the South Bay Cities Regional Housing Trust. At the first Board meeting for the Trust, I presented on Affordable Housing 101. This was my very first slide, "Building housing costs money."

The two hardest and most unforgiving facts in housing policy are that it actually costs a lot of money to build new homes and that the rents that poor people can afford are not enough to pay off the cost of construction.

Pern Pla just rolls off the tongue.

The people in charge of your city’s streets do not care if their road designs kill people, so long as traffic flows freely.

Grant Henninger@granthenninger.com

Two years ago, I was removed from the Anaheim Planning Commission because of a fight with the city’s traffic engineer. I wanted him to prioritize safety. He wanted to ensure cars could move quickly through our city. The city council of the largest city in the county backed his vision of our roads.

Email newsletters are the devil. RSS is great but most readers are designed for completionists. I live in Discord, so I built Wireburst: an RSS-to-Discord bot that puts my feeds into channels. cruftbox.comWireburst: RSS feeds in Discord, because email is the devilI have a complicated relationship with information. I want a lot of it: what's happening in tech, the world, culture, and the corners of the internet I care about. What I don't want is my inbox turnin...

I’m in San Francisco this weekend, and for the first time I’ve seen a significant number of Waymo driverless taxis out in the wild. After watching them for a while, I’m now of the opinion that they should be banned outright. They do nothing but make traffic worse & are a danger to other road users.

I think the California Bluesky Housing folks have convinced me to vote for Steyer for governor. I have real misgivings about voting for a billionaire with no experience in public office, government should not be run like a business. However, depressing Republican turnout in the general sounds good.

Today is mine and @onetwobre.bsky.social’s anniversary. She got me a first edition, first printing of Death and Life. Of course, I’ve had the same paperback copy that every planner owns for years, but it’s pretty neat having a first printing. It looks good on my urban planning shelf.

I’ve never seen a copy of Neighborhood Defenders in a bookstore before. The Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur was incredible. It was probably the most well-curated bookstore I’ve been to, full of classics and other influential work. I’d love to do nothing but read through the entire store.

For the past year, I’ve really been struggling with the in-fighting amongst people who should be allies for creating better cities. Specifically, there was an instance last year in the @thewaroncars.bsky.social discord where I was called racist for saying street takeovers by cyclists are bad.

If a black woman from the Bronx can be protested for opening a coffee shop in the community where she grew up, it’s no wonder why my middle-aged white ass from the suburbs would get some pushback when it comes to city building.

In conversation with Rex Richardson at the end of the keynote, she said she just focuses on the voices that support her, while putting the naysayers out of her head. I need to try to do the same, and not expect everyone to be rowing the same direction even though we have the same overarching goals.

This comment derailed my professional life in many ways. I pulled back from social media & stopped working on the book I was writing. Instead, I focused on the work right in front of me. I’m still doing good work making our cities better, but it doesn’t require me to interact with the public much.

Since the weekend, a fire has been burning on Santa Rosa Island. I had plans to go backpacking there next month, which won't be happening now. (Channel Islands is the last National Park I need to visit in California.) More importantly, the fire is devastating island fox habitat on Santa Rosa.

Fires in recent years on Santa Cruz and Catalina caused a decline in island fox populations on those islands, but they've recovered quickly there once the vegetation started to grow back. Hopefully we see similar patterns on Santa Rosa after this fire.

I'm sad I won't be able to visit Santa Rosa this year. I had planned to try to see the foxes for myself and take some pictures. Now I'm going to need to wait, and maybe wait even longer until the fox population returns, but with a little luck it will return.

Not too long ago, island foxes were critically endangered, but have shown a great recovery, especially on Santa Rosa Island. At one point they were down to just 7 foxes on the island, but the population has rebounded to over 2,800 as of last year.
