I had more than one person ask me to look into this, and here we are. I wrote about the Washington Appellate Project (they're the reason we don't have the death penalty in WA, for ex) and how a contract dispute with the state Dept of Public Defense might lead to its closure.

The Urbanist@theurbanist.org

Washington's only non-profit appellate public defense law firm has historically been tasked with handling around 40% of public defense appeals. But without a new contract agreement, it could have to close its doors at the end of the year. Story: www.theurbanist.org/unfathomable...

Does the cheat sheet contain more libelous falsities or just this one?

On Monday morning, 23 Washington State Ferry engine room employees called out sick, forcing WSF to announce that 13 of its 18 ferries were out of service that day. While this technically wasn't a strike, it does highlight the workplace grievances WSF staff have been trying to get solved since 2020.

Humans are messy. We triumph and we fail and we spend way too much time focused on things that don’t matter. I spent most of this season trying to figure out what went wrong with the Seattle Mariners, and my best guess (short of insane conspiracy theories)? They were, simply, human.

In my 20 years engaging with nonprofits serving the #immigration space, I hadn't seen anything like this. So I had to write about it. Thanks to all who shared what they knew, often a significant personal risk. #icewatch

Washington Immigration Solidarity Network is reportedly in "financial freefall" and laid off 14 workers on Wednesday (18 total this year), many who were involved in a unionization effort. @viacedar.bsky.social has the story for @thestranger.com www.thestranger.com/news/immigra...

Seattle comes in at No. 4 in Oxford Economics' Global Cities Index, behind New York, London, and Paris, in the ranking of the world's largest 1,000 cities based on five criteria: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment and governance.

The worst news for me, personally, but very glad that Vivian is staying in the company and taking a post at The Chicago Reader

As a regular late nighter, it fucking sucks to have to leave the bar an hour early or cut a visit with a friend short because if I miss the bus (which I’ll have to walk some 20 minutes for in the first place) it’s a thirty minute wait in the cold.

A private investigator is trying to identify the man accused of beating a Canada goose to death at Lake Union Park. Naia Okami took the case for free after seeing a Reddit post about the attack, and she’s already used photos and matching tattoos to develop a lead on the alleged attacker.

Yikes: The Stranger made a classic amateur-hour mistake in its supreme court election results writeup, reporting only King County (Seattle-area) results in statewide races. The statewide results are completely different, which makes their analysis inaccurate. Amazing that no one there caught this.
