I’ll be doing an AMA tomorrow all about our reporting on the AI weapons manufacturer Anduril’s new Ohio factory. We’ll chat about tax breaks that impact a needy public school, its connection to a controversial data center, and how an Anduril lobbyist quashed a farmer-led ballot initiative

Arizona's data center sales tax break cost residents $38.5 million in FY 25, up from $19.4 million the year before. That’s a 98% increase in one year. And that number could spike. 1/2 🧾: Tax Expenditure Reports

"I’m being told data centers are supposed to be good for my students because they might generate money for schools. I don’t buy it. I have a simple question: Why should funding for my classroom and students depend on Nevada building more data centers?" nevadacurrent.com/2026/09/21/d...

“Let me tell you what is actually expensive...to take off work, paying for emergency room visits and watching children struggle to breathe. I do not want to hear that public health is too expensive, while rubber-stamping data centers that dodge CEQA.” calmatters.org/environment/...

calmatters.orgThis rural, California county approved a massive new data center. Then it changed its mind.A million-square-foot data center became a lighting rod in this rural county. Residents and local leaders are fighting back.

Raise your hand if lately you've seen ads telling you how data centers make sure you can online bank, watch your movies, and scroll videos. But that's not why they're building. #AI

I'd be mad if I helped pay to build a billionaire his stadium but then couldn't afford tickets. Actually, I'd just be mad if I had to help a billionaire pay for his stadium.

States have given billions in tax breaks to the richest companies in the world to bring in their hyperscale data centers. Many states are now cancelling them, leading industry execs to threaten to shift projects to states such as IN, WV & WY that have retained favorable tax regimes.

I also can't imagine that the secrecy around data center tax breaks is remotely sustainable in today's political environment. @goodjobsfirst.org finds in its recent report that 14 of the 37 states with tax exemptions don’t publish their official revenue losses in a timely manner.

Tax policies under the second Trump administration have mostly asked more from working families and fueled wealth inequality. The combined impact of tariffs, ending health care tax credits, and OBBBA results in a tax increase for most Americans except the richest 5%.

The penalty amounts to about 1 per cent of what analysts expect to be the bank’s net income this year. This UBS example is not unusual, as I found in my story which I put together with the help of data from @goodjobsfirst.org supplied by @philmattera.bsky.social

Love seeing more journalists citing the great research from @goodjobsfirst.org on how much money states lose in the form of tax breaks for data centers.

Georgia audited its own data center tax breaks and found that the state gave up $474 million in sales taxes in one year—and got back just $41 million from the industry. At least 38 states have deals like this. #AI #News #US

Brad Reynolds, chief revenue estimator for the Texas Comptroller’s office, told state senators: “To be unable to justify employment of even 20 people on a permanent basis at one of these things tells you how little employment is really stemming from this.”

Anduril: Two Ohio farmers twice gathered signatures to put local zoning changes to popular vote. Each time developers intervened and local officials blocked ballot measures. @tkbarnes.bsky.social @inkstickmedia.com bit.ly/44Q6p7D Is this happening with data centers? @signalohio.bsky.social

"Among other things, the city asked the team whether it would be willing to make a private financial contribution, cover any cost overruns, pay annual rent, and agree to labor, community benefits and good-neighbor agreements." The team refused to answer. katu.com/news/investi...

Why does all this matter? Like I wrote up top... the whole premise of economic development "incentives" are that they "incentivize" a company to come to town. But according to the records and the American First Policy Institute, Anduril is still negotiating more well after setting up shop in Ohio
