'For social sciences, our analysis suggests that publication excellence may therefore have a commercial value to universities that conventional models do not show. Our modelling of 16 research-intensive universities illustrates the potential scale.'

This headline is simply infuriating as none of the rest of the story (nor the report itself from what I have seen) supports this claim. Rather consistent long term austerity has made it harder to get a diagnosis. Very poor show BBC.

Apropos of everything, my book on death in law enforcement custody begins with a chapter on lynching & the direct historical linkage btwn these two phenomena. Lynchings were very public acts and only declined as overtly racist policing & capital punishment were put into place. deathincustodybook.com

30k jobs lost in the university sector and nobody batters an eyelid. 900 jobs in the steel industry and government holds a COBRA meeting. Surprising strategy given multiple governments' commitment to "growth".

'The job cuts are one of the highest figures seen in a sector which has seen an estimated 30,000 cut in recent years as universities battle a financial crisis caused by declining international enrolments, rising costs and a long fee freeze.'

Completely echo The Wheelers in Return to Oz when I was 6 (also watched the film later in life and still found it terrifying). Honourable mention to Stphen King's It as well, which was shown on our school bus every night for a week when I was 12. Couldn't go out alone for weeks.

Two answers. The Wheelers in Return to Oz and the entirety of the episode The Soldier and Death from Jim Henson’s The Storyteller.

Impressed that healthcare was directly referred to in HMICFRS's report of Scottish police custody suites. Our study didn't include Scotland but happy to see healthcare being taken much more seriously. Will have to check the report to see if it is actually healthcare or simply safeguarding.

What a fantastic (and much needed) module to provide MA students with a deep (and ultimately optimistic) scholarly approach for navigating our present technolandscape.

Very excited to be working with the amazing @thecentriclab.com on MSc module - Emotions, Technology & Power. I’ve been a longtime fan of Centric and their radical approach to justice-oriented science. Getting to design a course with them is a dream come true. Students taking this module are lucky! 🧵

I've said it before and I'll say it again, nearly all the students I see in my role as providing additional support, are all working full-time (or close to full-time) outside their studies. The cost of university nowadays is far too high.

Margot Finn@eicathomefinn.bsky.social

'A third and two thirds can’t both be right. And when a minister at the heart of the government’s economic thinking picks one of them, it matters which is closer to reality.'

University messaging on the value of universities has clearly failed. Instead of repeating the same messages for the same result (or hiring a new PR firm), maybe try engaging with academic staff (who actually teach and support students) to message differently and better?

Had a great time at #MedSoc. Definitely a theme of "Carceral Seepage" (Serrano 2026) across many of the papers (well those I attended anyway). @ellenstewart.bsky.social and my event on criminal justice healthcare was well-attended and had great discussion. Overall, very successful conference.

My institution just launched a staff survey a week after 75% of applicants were turned down for promotion. This will end well (although should be grateful we had a promotion round, thanks to the unions for that). Might provide UEB with insight into why NSS scores collected in Feb are so poor!

Always easy to find contemporary examples for my social construction of crime lectures. This year's example 80 year old climate change "terrorists" versus blackshirt "protestors".

... to run relatively well the last 4km, finishing in 51:24. Far from my best. Definitely need to get back to serious training (so heart rate isn't as high when running at pace regardless of heat) and need to take heat into account when deciding water strategy, not just length of race.

Sorry for the poor picture, but delighted to have just pressed the submit button on the following manuscript. It has taken over five years, but (if all goes well) our book "Care Detained" should be out with Routledge early next year.
