> dumb post going around about how "Nintendo has lost its soul" since Iwata passed > dumb posts dunking on it by saying actually Iwata's reign was when Nintendo lost its soul because (gorgeous screenshots of excellent Wii U/3DS era games)

I think I'm seeing the warfare between those who were angsty teens during the Wii U and are relieved Nintendo moved away from all that, now threatened by a rising tide of those who were idealistic children during that same time and think that everything since has been downhill.

I don't think so. But in terms of tone, voice acting, characterization, aesthetics, and what it's actually TRYING to be, probably? It's complicated. Frontiers is also just WAY too long and I feel like I may be burnt out on it forever, whereas I could boot up Forces right now and find something fun.

The /reason/ I'm so burnt out on Frontiers is because I played it start-to-finish at least four times in the first year it was out, so it's not like I hated it! I guess it's that Forces' concepts appealed to me more, but its execution underwhelmed, whereas Frontiers was the opposite.

> Do you have a specific Forces OC you use or is it different each time? I really like making new ones and have max'd out the medal ranking as each animal, but my favorite is the pirate dog guy that would probably be named Captain Marvelous if I could be bothered to name them.

Eh, it doesn't happen THAT much, and I just block the few who actually get nasty. I think it's just the anonymity of the thing. Someone sees me having an opinion like, "Classic Sonic is my special lil guy and I will love him 4 eva," and it bothers them and they want to let me know. :P

Fortunately we've spent 15 plus years now proving we CAN have both, which is what I really wanted anyway.

Case in point, I'm glad I wasn't the only person who saw this and my immediate first thought was, "absolutely none of those were from the early 2000s though, Numa Numa is the oldest thing there and it was 2004; Heck, Overly Attached Girlfriend was 2012!" "Also hot DAMN Tay Zonday looks good."

I think "CHRONOLOGY" (for lack of a better term???) is one of my Special Interests, so this sort of thing never feels weird to me, but I've definitely noticed other, less-weird-in-my-specific-way people being really caught off-guard by it.

I didn't have to look any of that up, my dumb brain just makes room for this useless information about when things happened. Actual early 2000s memes were weirder, more insular to a time when "internet culture" wasn't just culture, so I'm not sure how you could promote your web browser with them.

When Ocarina of Time 3D came out, it was this big deal, like: The Greatest Game of All Time is finally getting a remake, looooong after its release on the super duper retro old N64, 13 whole years ago! Now it's like: Didn't we JUST get a remake only 15 years ago? Time is weird and I don't like it.

When Sonic Colors Ultimate was new, one of my buds saw it on my home screen and started going on a rant about how they keep lazily remaking games that "just came out" and I got to be like, "Dude... I am so, so sorry, but Sonic Colors was released more than 11 years ago."

I remember going out to the garage one weekend and finding my ancient Super Nintendo, replaying DKC2 for the first time since I was a boy, and realizing that it was even better than I remembered, and even more special to me than I knew. It was the year 2000. I first played it just 4 years earlier.

The fastest turnaround on nostalgia I think I experienced was Firered/Leafgreen. Only six years

More to your point, YEAH, FRLG hit *huge*. It was so weird in hindsight. I was the only person I knew who played Ruby & Sapphire. But FRLG felt like a cultural event in a way nothing had since RBY. It was the moment Pokémon crossed that threshold from "old & cringe" to "nostalgic & cool again."

My mom had lots of PC games. And sometimes I would just pick one up and put it in the drive and try it. Once I did that with a Jeopardy game. And during the player setup, it said something like SEX? [M or F]: ☐ Obviously I had no idea what any of that meant, I was like 4 years old or something.

This is quite possibly the most effective ad copy I've ever seen. I know what I'm playing tomorrow.

It really is ridiculous, especially since my nostalgia for 30 years ago makes both of theirs' seem like child's play.

Genuinely stood up and started clapping at the end of this. Felt like I was going crazy seeing what people have been saying about this game in modern years like I was looking at it through rose-tinted glasses, but, NO. HG/SS *are* that good

Yup. I had a Fun Conversation with a family member a while back: FAM: Do you think /MEN/ should be allowed to play in women's sports? ME: ...of course I don't think that. FAM: Well at least you've got that right! ME: ...but trans women aren't men.

This post is unavailable.

And the saddest, most telling thing is that they didn't even have the *terminology* to understand the position I was arguing from.

I still haven't been back.

This is the door to the final regular boss. I am out of banana. Maybe I should just stop here.

We thought there should be a definitive podcast about Sonic, chronologically tracking through the 90s and letting you relive (or first-live) a childhood in those days, with all really good editing and music and features and guests and stuff, so we did. It's nearly over: stctp.zone

So, you're not the only person to mention the green energy crystals, but to Madd and anyone else who HAS mentioned it, I want to dig in on that more. What made it so rough for you guys? I'm someone who normally despises stuff like that, but it didn't really bother me this time???

Dr Madd@drmadd.bsky.social

Favourite: The visuals, Viewros is stunning and feels appropriately alien compared to the rest of the franchise. Least Favourite: Segmenting the biomes with a giant hub world really didn’t work for me and making collecting the green crystals mandatory killed all my enjoyment in the final act.

I've replayed the game a few times now, and what I've consistently found is that as long as I'm smashing the crystals I see as I go through the desert normally, I always have ALMOST enough to push me over the line by the time I get to the point that I have to have them.

And that's exactly the point where you get power bombs, which let you smash the big rocks and make it SUPER easy to make up the difference. That plus the fact it sets it up so early and you only actually need half of the total makes it the LEAST annoying Prime fetch quest in my book.

1: Speed as reward & raw importance of terrain 2: Aesthetics & music CD: Special Stages & Time Attack 3&K: Level design & bosses Mania: Approachability & stage gimmicks Superstars: Making every character unique and designing levels around their abilities & animation Wait this was 2-3 things oh well

Sometimes people will criticize a new entry in a long running series for not being as memorable as the older entries, and I'm always like Is that a fault of the new one? Or is it because you've played the old game a dozen times, discussed it, rewatched clips, etc, for 30 years?

So! A few random thoughts on the state of YouTube and the channel. Things have been going downhill for years, which has been negatively impacting my output, and in 2026 I feel like they're finally hitting a breaking point. Individual videos lack STAYING POWER, and something has got to give.

At this point, I see two paths forward: - Do what YouTube seems to want and shift to largely being a commentary channel covering recent news and releases who can put out videos every single week and who depends on Nintendo Directs happening to pay the bills, or

- Drop all Patreon/membership tiers as low as I can, hope more of my audience is able to support me a little, and just keep making videos like it's 2016 You can probably guess which way I'm leaning.

And this leads to SO much more burnout, because it makes sustainability feel impossible. I spent most of 2023 working on that Metroid season, then unexpectedly my car exploded, and we had to use EVERYTHING to cover it. What I made when it came out was largely all I'd ever make from it.

Adding to that, it is VERY palpable that the K-shaped economy means people have so much less discretionary spending than they did before. I'm offered no sponsorships, ad revenue is way down, and my Patreon is down by almost 50% versus last year.

Here's what I mean: In 2018, I'd release a video, and it would usually enjoy relatively evergreen views. It'd do well early on, but in the weeks and months to come, it would keep growing. Since ~2021, videos do well at launch, but die after a week or two.

QFTC: Nearly a year later. What was your favorite and least favorite thing about Metroid Prime 4?
