I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

The crowd were extremely confused by this, perhaps understandably given having an American birth certificate literally does make you an American.
Rally speaker: "Mike Rogers is an American. Abdul has a birth certificate. The birth certificate says he's a citizen of America. You know what? a birth certificate doesn't make you an American."
Starting off my spooky film season this year, I've watched Mario Bava's Black Sabbath (1963), the film which inspired the name of the band. letterboxd.com/gbrading/fil...
Horror season rolls on with Maniac Cop (1988). Not a good film, but an entertaining one. letterboxd.com/gbrading/fil...
The spooky season watchathon continues with The Psychic (1977), Lucio Fulci's tense giallo which often feels more like a thriller. letterboxd.com/gbrading/fil...

It's still probably the best operating system Microsoft ever made. I remember when I started working at my current employer, we were still using Windows XP until about 2013!
this is a QUARTER CENTURY old now youtu.be/GAv1EwoRnec Back to 2001 on LGR today for a retrospective on Windows XP! Reminiscing on its release, unboxing and setting it up, new features, games, screensavers, and a bunch of nifty early 2000s things. Still a truly enjoyable eXPerience decades later!

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
Not convinced this is as compelling new evidence as the Graun clearly wants it to be. If no silencer was used, why were both children still in their beds when shot? Surely they would have heard the noise. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/ng-i...

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?
From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

We must ensure we deliver profits and dividends for our stakeholders (even if that means killing the planet in the process). 😒
The decision to approve the Jackdaw gas field will help bring 'stability and certainty' in the country’s energy sector after 'many years of difficulty' the Scottish Government has said Full story here: www.thenational.scot/news/2...

The broadcast media have become more and more insular and incestuous over recent years; see also Jo Coburn being interviewed on Kuenssberg. The fact that they got away with allowing Ed Balls to interview his own wife a few years ago was kind of a tipping point.
Interviewing a govt minister Hazarika shows a graph comparing young people claiming PIP to the size of our armed forces & declares it "tells a story about modern Britain" I can't even make a sarcastic comment about our fearless fourth estate, because Hazarika is a Labour politician

Andy Burnham’s government has ordered the NHS in England to deliberately harm trans people
So many people buried their heads in the sand this week saying that NHS segregation of trans people was "for their safety". But even internal NHS assessments say it will cause direct harm. Sex is not binary and trans people need respectful care based on actual physiology, not anti-trans slogans.

There needs to be massive pushback against this. I don't want to abolish the BBC but it simply needs to be funded via general taxation, like any other public entity. Forcing the licence fee for streaming is effectively a tax on having an Internet connection.
BBC licence fee to be extended with ‘YouTube tax’ to force more to pay
I don't think this is realistic but what has always been realistic has been the Norway option; outside the EU, but inside the single market and customs union. This is what should have been agreed as a result of Brexit in the first place. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
