I came within a few hours of dying last Thanksgiving. It’s taken these last eleven months to get back to writing. The previous project, the Neon Church, was both 1) undiscoverable and 2) a reminder of what was different before the blood clot almost killed me.

My wife @jeanschwab.bsky.social got either a real email from an angry lawyer or the best phishing attempt of all time. It was an included pdf, the subject line was “late,” and the body said will you pay this fucking invoice already

Last November, I almost died from a blood clot in my abdomen. But I’m still around, so I voted yesterday. So I could tell the shameful neo-confederates in this state to go fuck themselves. Some of us don’t side with racism, transphobia, or theocracy.

Keep fighting, authors. Cancel your dues and membership to this and any other group that capitulates to the LLM fraud machine and refuses to fight in your name to protect your rights as HUMAN creators. There is no ethical use of generative AI. Boycott the SoA. #AuthorsNotAlgorithms

hello, I am doing some research and would like to tap into the collective brains of BSKY: 1. can you share some genre or literary fiction magazines that have closed and the archive is NO LONGER ONLINE 2. the same but the archives remain online FOR NOW i would also appreciate RTs for awareness 💀

The new name is a fragment I’ve held onto in my writing notebook for eighteen years or so, waiting for the right use. It also has the benefit of being a sequence of words only I’ve used, apparently, so discoverability’s not an issue. And it fits the kind of thing I’ve been writing, it seems.

So I decided to rename the project. Not start from scratch; the old stories are still here, the links 301, a permanent redirect, so the old links go to the new site.

1) because there was a Tim McGraw song named the same thing I’d never heard of. Just because you can get the domain doesn’t mean it’s a good idea (I finally learned the lesson my wife has been trying to teach me)

2) I am almost entirely the same. The clot was in my abdomen, not my skull or nearby. But whether stress, or whatever, there have been impacts. Not only physical, which is the most obvious. Writing’s harder.

working on a heartbreaking Pokémon story tentatively called “Flowers for Dragalge,” narrated by a Charmander who takes an experimental medicine that evolves it all the way to Charizard before failing and devolving back to Charmander again

i'm thinking about doing a live reading of Nuzzi's entire book and selling tickets to raise funds for a charity that teaches kids not to read

Finished @older.bsky.social 's POTENCY OF UNGOVERNABLE IMPULSES last night. It was very good, changing the rules before the series codifies a formula. I appreciated the clear-eyed portrayal of a 2nd party confronting a partner's "melancholy" with an open heart, as a melancholic myself.

Finished THE LADY KILLER, Masako Togawa's 1963 mystery novel last night. It's sharply drawn with a unique structure, and surprised even a jaded reader like me. Also Togawa herself led a life as fascinating as her fiction: "singer/songwriter, actress, feminist, novelist, lesbian icon."

Musk is prepping the male Grok “companion,” which he describes as a cross between “Edward Cullen from Twilight and Christian Grey from 50 Shades.”

Thinking about where educators & colleges are getting this pervasive idea that AI is inevitable and we have to jump on board or get left behind. For the record, I don’t think that’s true. That message is coming from the companies making & selling the tech. That should be a red flag to slow down.

you've heard about the college kids who can't do anything without ChatGPT's help—but what about the students who oppose generative A.I. for myriad reasons and refuse to rely on it as a shortcut? well, I found and spoke with a few of them here: slate.com/life/2025/07...

For the first time in 2 years, Ava’s tests are clear. When her dad told me I was so relieved I cried. Today he told me NMDP has already identified matches through Ava’s drives. Thank you, everyone, so much, for everything.

My best friends' daughter is 3 and needs a bone marrow transplant. Anyone in the US 18-40 can text this number for a free cheek swab. If you're not a match for her, you could be a match for someone else. Times are tough, but we'll help each other. That's what we do.
