NEW: I spoke with current and former EA employees to understand how the latest layoff round played out and the realities of daily life at the U.S. publisher.
The short version? EA is controlled by an executive class that "cannot fail, only be failed." Workers, then, will always pay the price.
Some folks have really tied themselves into knots with this belief bordering on zealotry that the release of the New Big Game is going to have millions and millions of new people buying current gen consoles next month that they'll twist every single piece of info into that story no matter what.
sorry i need to publicly be a hater for a second but what do you mean the giant 230k+ signature save mass effect petition is only about the IP and not the devs that were laid off
We've had people tell us that playing this game inspired them to reconnect with their family.
I hope you'll take this opportunity to bring some heartfelt narrative into your spooky season!

Between Tim Sweeney being an absolute AI chud and the harassment of our beloved @kenney.nl, we've decided to cancel our previously announced Epic Games Store release for Shape Sender Deluxe 🚮

Microsoft is offering buyouts to about 60,000 employees in latest cost cuts, roughly a quarter of its workforce, as the company tries to control its head count while avoiding layoffs

As we move toward the end of the year, I have room in my schedule to take on one more contract (on the smaller side).
Building out your go-to-market plan? Firming up your studio ops processes? Need someone to augment your existing platform strategy and ensure you launch smoothly?
Let's talk!
The demo was gorgeous, moody and chock-full of the FMV sequences Causeway promised for this game, and some parts were so trippy I was seeing double @futterish.fsquared.biz.
I loved chatting with Jacob at Game-a-Palooza earlier this month. This preview provides additional insight into our design philosophy and gives you a new peek behind the curtain about our use of full motion video!
I previewed The Final Cut of Lilith Cunningham from @causewaystudios.com at Game-A-Palooza in Brooklyn. I've been super interested in this game and was not disappointed!

Fun fact, he was asked under oath if he'd have just taken a special deal for epic, and immediately said yes. There was never any thought of benefitting the rest of the industry at the time, when he was forced to be honest about it
Be wary of any AAA exec who claims to know what indie life is like, how we make games, how we execute our business against our values, and what we need.
They don’t know. They don’t care. They are using us as an excuse for their miserable decision making. Why? Indies create critical mass.
People like Tim Sweeney need us. And because they need us, they presume to speak FOR us.
If it smells like bullshit, you don’t need to step in it to know it *is* bullshit.
Sweeney also claimed that his vanity war against Apple and Google (which appears to have ultimately led to mass layoffs at Epic) was for the good of the industry. It’s a thin cover that we all see through.
FFVIII was one of the first that made me see how awesome stories could be in games & started my love for RPGs.
I remember playing the demo on one of the PS1 demo disks back in the day and wanted it so bad. It was my first FF & the first game I ever beat by myself.
The opening will forever be ICONIC!
And if you aren't a developer, tell us what made you excited about games as an art form!
Since I'm on the publishing/marketing side (with a sprinkle of design), I think what sealed it for me was the big Walmart Canada leak in 2018. PANIC flooded through the game industry... except at Bethesda.
Coming in to answer the question from @futterish.fsquared.biz about what made a non-dev excited about games.
Interactive art
I've always been huge on interactive art and I was starting to really age into cognitive awareness when the PS1 released with an explosion of emphasis on meaningful stories.
And if you aren't a developer, tell us what made you excited about games as an art form!

This week has been beyond difficult for the games industry, so we want to use this weeks #QuestionsWithCauseway to reflect on how impactful games are.
So, which game or franchise made you want to be a developer?
While everyone else was trying to figure out how to protect their huge reveals, Bethesda said... LET'S. GO.
They confirmed Rage 2 was real in the funniest way possible. At the same time, they confirmed that big swaths of that leak were real (further complicating the lives of everyone else).
It was hilarious! It was a smart, creative pivot.
I wanted to do something like that. I wanted to be creative in that way.
And today... well... you can SHORT THAT BABY! and I get to [REDACTED] when Lilith [REDACTED] and then she [REDACTED] and then they [REDACTED]. AM I RIGHT?!
The Causeway Studios team will be at AdventureX in London showing off The Final Cut of Lilith Cunningham!
If you're a member of the press who will be at AdventureX, please reach out! Let's chat! (This demo is only available in-person... a public demo will happen next year.)

If you're managing a fund or want to chat about co-publishing, we're thrilled to share some of the super secret things we're building into the game.
I'll be there w our dynamic writing duo of @gregwrogers.bsky.social (Creative Dir) and @amandafarough.ca (Dir of Production/Narrative Designer)!
I know that the development that exists behind trailers is often invisible outside the studio.
And even with that in mind and not knowing what the dev story is on this project… this one hurts.
Can confirm that this is a real trailer of the Mass Effect game that BioWare was developing up until its closure yesterday www.reddit.com/r/masseffect...
Even if the cost is HALF this, exclusivity on console games simply does not make sense right now. It sure as hell won't make sense with adoption shot in the kneecaps by hardware that costs $1200 - $1800.
There simply aren't enough customers that have interest in each game to cover the spread.

A source tells Kotaku that Gears of War: E-Day cost over $500 million to make. Sales estimates have been weak despite earning the highest Metacritic score since the original trilogy.

Andrew Wilson specifically called out how successful Battlefield 6 has been.
Labor has rarely been able to directly share in the success of video games, and almost never at the largest scale. Now? The people who make these wildly successful games can't even keep their jobs.
Now? Execs see games as widgets.
*They are the ones who are wrong.*
They have reduced the passion and hard work of thousands upon thousands of great game developers to just numbers to be shuffled around for the benefit of shareholders who know nothing about what they've invested in.
I will give AAA execs credit on one thing. They have correctly identified that games are too big, too expensive, and take too long to make.
Where I think their brains are rotted out is that they think keeping the scale and getting rid of the labor is the answer.
FA is hurting us. FO will hurt them

We need to tear down the current system. It isn't working for anyone but the people at the very top.
Video games were toys first, with art and technical prowess at their core. Then interactive games became artistic endeavors with commercial benefit.
it cannot actually be ignored or danced around that the closure of BioWare came so soon after the Saudi and Jared Kushner acquisition of EA. they absolutely did take the studio making EA’s broadly queerest games out back and shoot it old yeller style. do not let yourself or colleagues ignore that
BioWare’s Art Helped Me Understand Who I Am — Now, They’re Gone: BioWare is shutting down, but the studio's legacy lives on in the millions of hearts it's work touched. Like mine.
Part of my literal job is to fly out to physical game studios to rescue and recover historical materials that might be endangered and put them in a permanent archive. @gamehistoryorg.bsky.social is a 501(c)3 publicly funded to do that, my DMs are open, and I'm free for the next couple weeks...
what exactly DOES happen to materials from a major studio that’s closed? where do physical hard drives, documents, etc go? who maintains all this pointless secrecy? if you know or have stories, get in touch: nathan@aftermath.site, nathangrayson.666 (signal), aftermathdotsite@proton.me (proton mail)
However hard you think it might be to keep pushing and doing your best while the industry you love so intensely crumbles around you, it’s a trillion times harder.
(And this isn’t just isolated to game dev)
No matter what the reality looked like before today, no matter what we all knew would likely happen, nothing can prepare fans for losing a studio like BioWare.
My heart is with every single person who ever contributed to a BioWare game and with those of us who love so many of those treasures.
