My grandpa has been watching the Valkeries play recently and just called me to ask if I knew where Valhalla was. He said the team talked about playing there a lot but he hasn't heard of that place before since he's not very familiar with the Bay Area. 😭😭😭

Want “Paris density”? Let’s legalize six-storey single-stair apartments on every residential lot in every major city.

Kenneth Chan@iamkennethchan.bsky.social

This is Vancouver's very first proposal to build a low-rise, multi-unit residential building on a small single-family lot under the new single-staircase building rules. A 6-storey, wood-frame building with 24 family-sized units. #vanre #vanpoli dailyhive.com/vancouver/21...

This informative chart was shared by staff at last week's Oakland bike/walk commission meeting. The next time someone tells you "protected bike lanes are too expensive", remind them it's probably not the bikeway driving up the project cost, but all of the other non-bike-specific project elements.

The Emeryville city council race is dire on market rate housing. Here are the answers of the candidates I am supporting, David Mourra and @corry.us , on if we need to build market rate housing in Emeryville (first image is David, second is Corry)

And then two extremely embarrassing answers from Brandon Soublet and Kalimah Priforce, who say there is no room for any more market rate housing in Emeryville, despite our housing plan finding sites for more than 3700 units. (First pic is Brandon, second Kalimah)

This goes against all the progress Emeryville has made towards our pro-housing designation and should be a deal breaker for anyone running for office in the unaffordable, housing constrained bay area.

I keep coming back to the basic problem that if people lose their damn minds at the thought of not being able to drive on one single street next to the ocean, how are we supposed to cope with these kinds of much bigger changes that are inevitable and imminent?

ultimately it's shit like this that makes the decline of birth rates and resulting demographic skewing towards old people self-reinforcing. Greedy, wealthy retired people voting to destroy the funding for public services they relied on throughout their life now that they no longer need them

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Jurisdictions (even those who don't write their own building codes) could also proactively issue AMMR bulletins stating that they'll allow them. Let me know if you know of any who do it.

Yes building housing is lowering rents in other places, but it's not going to magically lower rent in California because *reasons*

In case you were curious about why you're poor, this is emblematic of the big brains in charge of California housing policy. This is how stupid people think about affordability.

Special thanks to the City of San Leandro, Alameda CTC, MTC, and Caltrans for helping to make this project possible.

The main difference I’ve noticed between West Coast NIMBYs and East Coast NIMBYs is that the former will tell you that they’re worried about gentrification, overpopulation and out of control capitalism, and the latter will just say the thing.

Sam@samd.bsky.social

Long Island right-NIMBYs are genuinely some of the worst people on earth. they’ll beg for a government handout in the form of NIMBY policies that artificially inflate the value of their homes, and then turn around and say that simply making it legal to build apartments is “charity” or something

Bay Area leftists and libs do this thing a lot where they take extreme conservative positions and dress them up in pseudoprogressive newspeak. it’s a problem everywhere to some extent but seems especially bad here.

Sam@samd.bsky.social

it’s actually crazy that DSA has embraced YIMBY candidates in NYC, LA, and DC …but @dsasf.org is somehow still scaremongering about YIMBYs and refusing to support car free streets because it could somehow theoretically benefit a real estate developer somewhere

A new example of the unique brainworms found in the San Francisco left: DSA-SF has apparently refused to take a position on Proposition G, which would destroy Sunset Dunes park and reopen the Great Highway to cars. Why? It doesn't achieve "working-class justice."

It's genuinely remarkable (and extremely frustrating) how much better the left has gotten on housing production and zoning in virtually every big city other than San Francisco

We can and we must build more homes for all of us.

Having a completely separated from traffic walk/bike trail across the Bay Bridge is so amazing. I went from couch to this view in 20 minutes as cars backed up for miles to get into the city for fleet week. Didn't help them that cars frequently stopped traffic trying to get pictures on their phones.

Everyone in this viewing area had to come by bike, transit, or on foot so it didn't have as intense crowding as many other areas.

This passage is likely referring to Emeryville's intergenerational housing project for seniors and youth at risk of homelessness that recently got a multimillion dollar subsidy from the city.

Somehow never noticed this awesome bike box/queue jump at 53rd and Hollis. Let's you safely get in front of the cars so you aren't pinched by the curb extension. Obviously a protected intersection would be better, but this is a cool solution.

I, personally, would not go on the record with a reporter to announce I’m in favor of destroying the playground my kid is currently loving because I drive to work once a week (and the road still wouldn’t go there anyway), but everyone lives their lives differently I guess

I don't think people really understand how they are being influenced by people that have no idea what they are talking about on things like measure RTM. The East Bay Times for example argues "The measure would further drive up the region’s cost of living". Except cutting service is what does that.

Sam Gould reposted

Also a lot of the angst over transit funding efficiency is *because* there is more scrutiny, governance & oversight, compared to freeway spending. Same people mistake the imbalance in access for a difference in outcomes. They don’t question what they don’t get to see.

Urban Land Rent 🇸🇴🚰@urbanlandrent.bsky.social

This sort of stuff makes me want to scream. The cost bloat is in *capital projects* not in operations! Capital projects are bloated because of a complex web of balkanized permitting processes, the byzantine and inconsistent nature of federal grant funding, and outsourcing talent to consultants.

It’s so cool how the modern conservative movement is antithetically opposed to property rights when it comes to legalizing homebuilding

@nextdoorsv.bsky.social this resolution from the League of California Cities had some great content around it.

Sam Gould@form67.bsky.social

Not that I've seen recently, but he did try to get the city to endorse the League of California Cities resolution to restore "local control" just a couple weeks ago.

Only one candidate for Emeryville City Council has not submitted required FPPC campaign finance disclosures and you'll never believe which one. Here's a hint, they were censured by city council 2 years ago in part for failing to file campaign finance docs. If you guessed CM Priforce, you win!

This councilmember has said he would bankrupt the city for censuring him, calls Affordable housing "slums", rants about YIMBYs and the "Bike Lobby", had to recuse himself from a road project after secretly taking money from property owners opposing bikes lanes. Please don't let him win again.

it is very cool (read: very not cool) that "What if the entire regional economy immediately exploded?" is a ballot measure in the bay area because we are in the 'touching the hot stove' era of american history. if you live in the bay area you should vote for the regional transit measure.

Rents for new leases of regulated 1-bed and studio apartments in Berkeley ticked down a bit in September '26, sequentially and annually, to a median $2098/month. That is the lowest of any September in a decade. Even in nominal dollars, that's lower than 2019.

This tragedy occurred on a street where the county recently completed a “pedestrian safety” project, but which local advocates pushed back against due to the lack of physical traffic calming & bike infrastructure. The warnings were ignored.
