Do you like The Vorrh by Brian Catling? Do you wish there was more dark, complex, surreal fantasy like The Vorrh by Brian Catling? This is a TTRPG inspired by The Vorrh by Brian Catling. Also, it kicks ass.

ITS LIVE!! I am OBSESSED with the Firmament. It is such an incredible, deeply evocative experience. I am MONTHS out from my last playtest and I cant stop thinking about it. It is the macabre, divine, and sublime. You absolutely need to play it.

I was fortunate enough to sit in on a playtest of this- an incredible, strange, arcane, mystical experience that conceals greater secrets, while being visually gorgeous. Really excited to table the full game- go back this!

Yes and also I think *players* should hold responsibility too, not just their characters (or the GM)! Like in Band of Blades, for example, character responsibility feels much more real because you as the player are in charge of the mechanic related to that character's domain

Kira Magrann@kiraserpentine.bsky.social

Randomly I had this thought the other day like, that RPGs don’t often ask your characters to hold responsibility

The Haunt-Along continues with Annihilation, Alex Garland's 2018 sci-fi/horror movie loosely based on the 2014 novel by Jeff VanderMeer. It's as beautiful as it is vicious, and I strongly strongly recommend (tho I have to say, the book is even better. go read it if you haven't!!)

Games are unique in the way they let us actively explore our relationship to the world we live in. Movies like Annihilation get us thinking about it, but a ttrpg can get us processing it, playing with it, testing its limits. Spooky! Check out what else has been haunting us this month:

Eventually Lena makes it to the site the meteor hit, leading to Annihilation's penultimate sequence - my favorite part. It contains a really beautiful, unsettling take on alien (?) life, but also speaks to the ways desperation transforms us.

I love games that follow the themes of Annihilation, like Trophy Dark, in which doomed explorers are transformed by a world they thought was theirs. In some ways, The Firmament (my latest game) is Annihilation as told by the shimmer.

It's around this point that it becomes clear not everyone is making it out of this alive. A particularly unpleasant bear (?) claims the first victim, and the nature of the shimmer starts to reveal itself. Bodies shift and change in subtle ways. The lines between human, plant, and animal blur.

Throughout, the movie is punctuated by discussion. Discussion of self-destructive tendencies, of the nature of refraction, of mortality and grief. Annihilation reminds us that a story about man vs. nature is inevitably one about man vs. self, because we are part of nature, and nature is part of us.

Annihilation starts with immediate disorientation. The group finds themselves days into their journey, equipment failing, no memory of how they got there. It continues along the lines of a classic "man vs. nature" narrative - they explore a swampy, unfamiliar landscape filled with potential threats.

But the strangeness escalates quickly. They find evidence of the past expedition, including some particularly gnarly video footage that suggests simply existing in the shimmer is a threat in and of itself. And then, of course, there's the remains.

Annihilation is about Lena, a biologist and former soldier who is sent on an expedition into a mysterious zone referred to as "the shimmer." Not much is known about the shimmer, other than 1) it formed around a meteor that hit a lighthouse, and 2) expeditions that go in don't usually come out.

She has a connection to the shimmer: her husband Kane was on a past expedition, but Came Back Different a year later. So Lena heads into the shimmer, in part because she wants to know what happened to Kane. She's joined by a geologist, a paramedic, a physicist, and their leader, a psychologist.
