During COVID emissions fell by ~5% 2026? 👇🏻

Glen Peters@glenpeters.bsky.social

What might global fossil CO2 emissions do in 2026? Based on IEA estimates, fossil CO2 emissions could decline 0.5% in 2026. A big 2.4% drop in oil & small 0.5% drop in gas, is partially offset by a 1.2% increase in coal. All very uncertain! www.energiogklima.no/nyhet/hormuz...

Today in London (10am) the UNEP releases its Emissions Gap Report 2026: The Point of Return They say the chance of holding warming to below 1.5°C with no or limited overshoot is gone. To get on the "lowest possible" scenario pathway (ie 1.7-1.8°C) emissions must fall by ~6.4% annually until 2030.

Although formal DEI practices and programs in the US have largely been dismantled, your interactions with your colleagues still matter, and our paper suggests they may matter a lot more than you may think.

Have an LLM summarize the paper for you if you must, but please read the quotes yourself (p.8-9). We included dozens in the paper and many more in the supplement.

I urge you—especially if you are in a leadership position—to sit with the stories of women (particularly those of color) and non-binary faculty who took the time out of their incredibly busy days to share them with us.

And many women described a second harm: reporting devaluation and having their institutions ignore it or make it worse.

We found that the most gendered experience wasn’t work-life balance, the focus of most retention efforts. It was feeling devalued, in formal evaluations, but particularly in everyday interactions. Unlike every other topic, the gender gap in devaluation was larger among more senior faculty.

Learning how to do careful qualitative research was one of the highlights of my PhD. It was emotional and often difficult to read these responses, but it gave me a clearer view of the problem than my work analyzing employment records did.

6,500 academics across 300 US institutions responded to the prompt. I was absolutely floored. As a computer scientist, my instinct was to analyze these responses with NLP-based methods. But after I read a few, it didn’t feel like we could do justice to these responses without reading them ourselves.

We wanted to understand why academics leave their jobs (doi.org/10.1126/scia...). We asked: “Tell us your story: what needs/needed to be different about your position?” I thought we would get a few hundred responses and I’d learn a bit more about the context of academic retention for myself.

doi.orgGender and retention patterns among U.S. facultyWomen faculty are more likely to leave their jobs than men, most often due to workplace climate, rather than work-life balance.

There are only so many ways you can save money on measurements like this. I could reduce some instrumentation, but it still requires the same amount of shiptime to get there, still need to ship a container of equipment even though it’s less full. Cutting observations means also higher uncertainties

Compared to satellites or telescopes the costs of AMOC arrays are actually quite tiny. We’re just having to use a funding mechanism not built for this type of work

Fortunately, it has become clear this is untenable. Unfortunately it required having a burnout to make it clear. Through the work of many the situation in the Netherlands may now change, but funding across the board is very fragile. Our US colleagues are in a most uncertain situation right now

Ocean and AMOC observations are as important as weather observations and should be sustainable supported as weather observations. This requires policymakers and countries to come together and work together

The competitive science call judge heavily on frontier science and innovation, so you have to recast the research in a new mold each time. Budgets are small and fixed. I can fit max 2 yrs observations in a 5 year project. Money for renewal of instruments doesn’t fit. Money for support doesn’t fit.

You get creative. You reuse the mooring cables for six years. You work with instruments that are 25 years old and weed out the worst ones and calibrate the hell out of the rest. You take on the job of three people. You get yourself invited to conferences to so you can pay for instrument batteries

For those outside science thinking “scientists are always complaining about money, how bad can it be…” I maintain five moorings that are part of an AMOC array between Canada, Greenland and the EU since 2014. The competitive science funding in the Netherlands is particularly unsuited to do this

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.
