Some folks today are conflating the District's overall budget with local sources. The District gets substantial federal revenue for grants and Medicaid that are not the product of local tax decisions.

Banning Chinese cars is a sure fireway to make Americans pay for (and burn) more Trump-priced gas while they drive large, expensive trucks and SUVs

Washington Post Opinions@postopinions.bsky.social

"Bipartisan federal legislation with support from the American auto industry would permanently ban Chinese cars from being sold in the United States," the Editorial Board writes. "Such blanket protectionism is the wrong approach."

These morons are running the country and the economy into the ground, and still the incompetence on display daily continues to astound. Make it stop.

Scoop: The anonymous source behind a POLITICO story that the White House is now using to justify a ban on the outlet was none other than JD Vance himself. Details in @status.news: www.status.news/p/white-hous...

Breaking news: The Supreme Court said construction can continue on the White House ballroom. The justices found that the historic preservationists who challenged the project had not suffered the direct personal harm required to bring a lawsuit.

The Supreme Court needs wholesale reform. Doubling the number of justices, establishing mandatory ethics rules, and creating term limits—perhaps by using senior status—is a moderate position.

Breaking News: The Supreme Court has allowed the Trump administration to proceed with plans to restrict mail-in voting. The decision clears, for now, an executive order that would create “citizenship lists” and directs the Postal Service to decide who gets a mail-in ballot. nyti.ms/3Ukqoti

Nope, we’re not. Downtown DC has had ongoing road closures since July 20 for this one event. And that will stretch until the first week of September. 7 weeks of this is enough.

Doug Burgum claims the residents of DC are telling him of the Indycar race, "please, please, do this again next year"

One of the myths of car ownership is that users fully pay for infrastructure costs. It’s only partially true, and in DC, it is not particularly true. Especially with the gas tax on the decline, it’s time to consider other options to sustainably fund the costs of building and maintaining our roads.

Even with this ANS, this would mean DC would need active congressional approval for things like local real property tax abatements, tax incentives for development deals, etc. This is an expansive overreach by the so-called party of small government.

Zach Israel@zachisrael.bsky.social

Ahead of tomorrow’s markup, an amendment in the nature of a substitute has been posted for H.R. 9720 - under the ANS, the bill wouldn’t apply to a D.C. law imposing or increasing a fee if: (1) the fee is under $500 and (2) the law does not impose or increase any other tax or fee.

If you lost your trust in FIFA in the last few days, rather than when they awarded the last World Cup to Qatar or when they awarded Trump with a grotesque peace prize, or when they decided to hike ticket prices to obscene levels….welcome to reality.

There is no defense of the process around Balogun’s red card. It should never have been given. It should never have been suspended. It should never have created the appearance or reality of political interference in sport.

What I haven’t heard enough about is the fact that FIFA actually set the stage for this by suspending Ronaldo’s red card that he received at the end of qualifying that should have been served at this World Cup too. If you’re mad about Balogun, you should be mad about that too!

Is this the Subway sandwich case of 2026?? Because what do you mean we’re charging people for sticking their hand in the reflecting pool? 🙄 Should be an easy one for a DC jury.

I mean…this says it all, doesn’t it? I honestly cannot tell you who this man wants to be (apart from Mayor?) or what direction he wants to take the city.

The cynical side of this is that the campaign is intentionally trying to downplay his most significant accomplishments because they are 100% aligned with the vision of his principal opponent.

Are they all to himself?

Heads up: White House officials are weighing a plan for Trump to issue 250 pardons as a way to mark the celebration of the nation's 250th birthday this summer, according to people familiar with the matter.

The price of oil jumped and stocks sank on Thursday after President Trump, in an address from the White House, said the war against Iran was “nearing completion” but failed to offer a concrete timeline and committed to more attacks. Here's the latest.

Shocker

Martin Austermuhle@maustermuhle.bsky.social

Per the D.C. CFO, @mayorbowser.dc.gov's office did not meet a planned March 22 deadline to get his office the proposed 2027 budget for a 10-day review before it's made public. (It's known as the "pencils down" date.) As such, he says the budget won't get to the D.C. Council by April 1.

The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to decide when the nation goes to war. President Trump’s strikes on Iran are flatly unconstitutional. There’s been no deliberation, no vote, no clear justification. This is a flagrant abuse of executive power.

Wow—here's some info to spread around: MPD announces at this month's DC PAC meeting that starting soon, MPD will be enforcing the law regarding license plates that are obscured with plastic covers. It is an *arrestable offense* that will be fully enforced. *Any* covering. Not just a ticket—arrests.

Grateful for this single planter on the R street entrance to the MBT. Still dreaming of a DDOT that can take simple steps to protect residents without requiring 3 years of advocacy.

Pleasantly surprised that the court did the right thing. This was not a close call on the law, and Trump has wielded this power in exceptionally corrupt ways.
