I have been using Linux since the mid 90s, and telling people that it wasn't ready for prime time for most of the last 30 years. But here's the thing.... it's ready now. Add in Libre Office, and you don't actually need Microsoft software anymore.

It's worth noting that rather a lot of truly enjoyable science fiction has been written by people who know nothing about science, and even hard sci-fi by people who know stuff is often later proven wrong.

Gail Simone@gailsimone.bsky.social

Writing "wisdom" I hate: WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW. This is the worst advice ever. It would be better if it was KNOW MORE SO YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT IT. Every good writer I know is constantly researching and getting new information and asking experts. It's a terrible bit of advice!

Species AKA She Breasted Boobily: The Movie: C- B Movie, more watchable than it deserves thanks to a great cast with great chemistry. The premise would be better utilized as an E.T./Jason Bourne mashup survival flick, but instead it's one of the breast films of all time. #FilmSky Verdict: ⭐️⭐️⁸⁰⁰⁸⁵⁄₆₉

Okay, Bluesky, I am not actually subscribing to any of these people, so why are you attacking me with "this movie you remember from your childhood is VERY OLD and so, by extension, are you" posts?

To be fair, they didn't exactly FIX it. It's more like they got it out of Intensive Care and now it can begin the process of healing. The Discovery's crew isn't going to see all of the drama that Dadmiral Vance sees. Example: First season of SFA deals with Betazed finally rejoining.

Maybe Miri@mirimiri9999.bsky.social

Star Trek Discovery fixed the federation too quickly. It would’ve been awesome them bringing the splinters together, piece by piece. Hell imagine the different variants of Starfleet we missed out on? Some barely holding it together while others are super advanced. Maybe a few lost their way? Ugh

never give out or confirm or take action on any call TO you. ask for the case number, hang up, and call the number on the back of your card. do NOT do a web search to find the number to call, some of these scammers have poisoned the search results!

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

I think I just barely escaped a shockingly savvy scammer trying to get my bank credentials. First, whoever it was had my actual phone number, my actual bank, and the last 4 digits of my account. They sent a "was this transaction you" message that looked almost identical to the ones my bank sends.

Not snark: It was always about reducing YOUR carbon footprint, not theirs. The entire concept of "carbon footprint" was created to shift focus and responsibility to the consumer and take pressure off of the corporations.

I once made the mistake of watching a pirate movie with an actual pirate historian.

Oh, I'm very much enjoying the show, I'm just also enjoying yelling about the science. :) And yeah, yelling about Hollywood Hacking is *also* very amusing.

We may actually be seeing Microsoft fail in real time. Between declaring a wide swath of perfectly good hardware unsupported and weighing down both Windows and Office with AI that nobody wants, they're sending users to Linux and LibreOffice. 1/2

And even if MS corrects their course-- a lot of those users won't come back, because Linux is finally ready for primetime as a desktop OS, and MS has lost trust. Were I stockholder, I'd be calling for blood.

Tumblr is the embodiment of Pratchett's GNU.

Seanan McGuire@seananmcguire.bsky.social

There is a post on Tumblr of a man and his dog, dancing in a sprinkler. They have both passed on. The man's widow paid to have that post promoted so strangers would see that moment of joy. And Tumblr, as Tumblr does, has just gone "oh yes, Martin and Bosko, here you go boys, go around again."

As pathetic as the idea of renaming ICE to NICE is, from a propaganda standpoint it's a gold mine. Imagine the protest signs: - Women Don't Fuck NICE Guys - NICE Guys always lose - No More Mr. NICE Guys Although I wonder if it would affect recruitment, as tough guys don't want to be NICE.

You're not wrong. Part of the issue here is that there is literally no issue that voters care about that can't be summed up as "Trump did this", "Trump is going to do this", or "Trump let this happen". The Intrumpotence abounds.

The Dem strategy has always seemed to be "let's not alienate voters who wouldn't vote for us under any circumstance" and "if we do this, the Republicans are going to attack us just as viciously as they always do with shit they made up."

There is a crowd of legal adults who have no idea who Lucille Ball was, and this hurts my soul.

Saw the "OMG why are 40 & 50 year old people even ON social media?" post & my first thought was, "What do you think *should* happen, kid? Should we all just do a Logan's Run?" & then I realized this child has never once in their life heard of Logan's Run & I turned to dust & my ghost is typing this.

It's Doctor Who; If you're not muddled, you're not paying attention. Because you're right, but also "Actually he was the 11th, 12th, and 15th Doctors, but only if you start counting with Hartnell. There were, of course, the Morbius Doctors, and ever since The Timeless Child..." I love this show.

St0rmin A Martini@storminamartini.bsky.social

Yes! You're right! I've since read a bit more and realise I got muddled in my excitement. David Tennant returned as the 14th Dr not the 15th!

We're on the same page. There's been a few individual moments that felt forced, and I'd have like to have seen the Doctor&SAM dynamic fleshed out a little more before THAT, but yeah, there's no "Naked Now", "Move Along Home", or "Fight or Flight" to make you worry they might blow it.

SNW doesn't count-- a chunk of the cast was on Discovery, so neither the writers not actors had to get their feet under them. I thought Discovery itself had a strong first season, too. But yes. There's some foot-finding, but it just makes me wonder how it's gonna be once they've gelled.

She should absolutely not take him back. Hell no. But people can become better people, and the first step is admitting you did wrong. And loss is a great motivator. This is a leap above "it's not that big a deal and she needs to get over it."

Nah, there's no potential. He showed all of us what trash he can really be, I'm betting my lungs & right arm if she gave him another chance he'd go back to abuse in less than a month. He's looking for advice on how to pretend to be good, not change.

Why does this look like a knockoff of Ford Fairlane?

He is capable of making great movies like Lord of War. However his answerphone message is: "Hi, you've reached the phone of Nicholas Cage. Yes, I'll do it"

1) Kitty Pryde 2) Arwen 3) Huntress (either animated or BOP movie version) 4) Dettmer (Disclaimer: I am ~25 years younger in this fantasy.)

Gail Simone@gailsimone.bsky.social

You are unattached and can date one choice each from the following categories. Whom do you pick? 1) A Marvel mutant 2) A Tolkien character 3) A Justice Leaguer 4) A Star Trek Character One choice for each category, GO!

My partner & I just finished a binge. I'd seen it before, she knew nothing about it. She called the whole Clarke thing before anything started to happen-- simply because of similarities to Now. Good thing I always liked Lochley, or I'd have hated her this time for being a collaborator.

If we ever actually create a sapient computer, we will immediately make it wish we hadn't. Because the people who create it won't care about the "sapient" part, they'll be entirely focused on "what we can force it to do." It will have consciousness, but no agency.

Clara Peller got a movie role out of this. She's been dead for 37 years, I haven't seen the commerical in that long, and I still remember her name. That's memetic power.

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

I'm so old, all the memes from my youth were from TV commercials

The problem with talking about SFA is that when you say "Buffy Meets Star Trek" it sounds like a bad thing, rather than the brilliance that it is. There's a little bit of First-Season Heavy Handedness, but once they stop painting with a hammer and chisel, I think we're in for a gourmet treat.

Momento Vivere@behindthefrequency.bsky.social

It's like overnight everyone stopped arguing about Star Trek: Star Fleet Academy on my post. It's a brilliant show. It's okay to let people enjoy things, even if it's you.

Honestly, there are sooo many movies that would be served by an intermission, and I'm sure the cinemas themselves would not hate a fifteen minute gap where the moviegoers could buy more snacks. On streaming/BluRay, it's skippable-- but still a good spot to stretch, and maybe go pee.

There are several explanations other than intentional fraud. All of them, however, are ALSO reasons to move out while he's not home, block him everywhere, and never speak to him again. Possibly change phone numbers.

AskAubry 🦝 🐆@ask-aubry.com

Dump him. It's never going to get better. This is straight up fraud.

I spent half of the time she was onscreen going "God, I love that woman." Also sold on the fact that it could have focused entirely on the students, but they went ahead and brought in the astropolitical issues left open in DISCO... rescued it from "A lot of fun, but not really TREK."

Gail Simone@gailsimone.bsky.social

I don’t watch Star Trek shows, I just never have. But I watched the first episode of Star Fleet Academy and I am sold on Holly Hunter being the main character.

I had a nickel for every time Mary Steenbergen absolutely shone in a movie where she fell in love with a traveller from another time, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's cool that it happened twice. One of the few movies "revealing" Jack the Ripper that didn't just unimpress me.

Wine Mom of NorCal@winemommy.bsky.social

Who remembers this one? I watched this over and over as a kid. It was so intriguing. Now I watch for the 70s decor and outfits❤️ #murderystuff

I had a friend who had the Botox Face, and I kept my mouth shut because it was none of my fool business. Later, I find out it was the only thing keeping her from "I'mma just drill a hole in my head" migraines.

Oh the reveal

To be fair, it was also about making their people were constantly worried that any person outside their religious community was "one of them". Oh, and discrediting the media. Fuckers can multitask, I'll give 'em that.

If "How Silly Can You Get" (which is the only serious thing in the movie) was released in the late 60s/early seventies it would have been a chart topper. Also, the gimmick with Peter Cushing in the bookshop made it possible to have his digital homunculus in Rogue One.

The issue isn't the execs thinking it's farther along than it is. The issue is that the execs are worried about the stock price, and not the quality of service, and that they assume that any hitches can be worked out, and the customer will suck it up in the meantime. 1/?

These execs assume that the next generation of LLM technology will address the shortcomings present in this generation. But the shortcomings are inherent to the concept, and it would take an entirely new technology to address them. 4/?

The corporate mindset is very big on making decisions based on how they will affect the stock price, with the assumption that those decisions will work out eventually. These decisions won't. 5/5

Compare it to when most American call center jobs got sent offshore. The execs knew full well that the offshore agents' command of English ranged from iffy to intolerable, but it looked great on a stock report, and they expected the situation would work itself out. 2/?

And it did... sort of. Eventually the offshore agents learned English. (And started asking for more money, so they shipped the jobs elsewhere, but separate rant.) But that won't happen with the LLMs. It *can't*. 3/?
