"I want to build housing" ok, then why haven't you done anything to facilitate that in *this* term? Did Toronto just start having a housing crisis recently?

Matt Elliott@graphicmatt.com

Next Q is about what they most want to accomplish over the next four years. "I want to build housing β€”Β a lot of it," says Chow. Bradford says he wants to eliminate the land transfer tax for the average homebuyer.

With "progressives" like this, who needs conservatives Utterly disappointing mayor. An absolute coward. Saying you need "consensus" to do something is the same as saying you will never do anything. Leadership is doing the right thing whether people agree or not

Matt Elliott@graphicmatt.com

Next Q: "How do you balance adding density with the concerns of residents who don't want a 30-storey tower butted up against their house?" Chow says it's important to work to get a "consensus" in the neighbourhood. She says she won't use strong mayor power to "override this local democracy."

Weird how no one ever asks the conservatives "where are you getting this money from"

Isaac Callan@isaaccallan.bsky.social

Brad Bradford discussing his first 100 days if he's elected mayor. 1st week: TTC + police to deliver transit safety plan, officer at every subway station. 1st budget: Freeze tax, keep 1.5% building fund increase. #ToPoli

When Doug Ford rips out bike lanes, defunds & sabotages transit, this is the outcome. Every single car injury/death is a choice that he (and we) make on a daily basis. It's not inevitable

Potentially the most incredible dummymander of all time

Striking: Dems growing optimistic about sweeping all four of the big House races in South Texas. If doable, that's seismic. DCCC's Madison Andrus tells us on the pod that internal polling has Trump -23 in TX-28, which he won by 10 points. Transcript: newrepublic.com/article/2168...

Regarding the Alberta referendum, it's a pretty classic "flood the zone". 10 questions, all of which are insane, with one truly insane one that gets all the airtime and allows the other 9 to pass This referendum, even though number 10 failed spectacularly, is a loss for Alberta and Canada

"giving Albertans first priority on new employment opportunities" So embarrassing. Admitting that you can't compete with immigrants. "Immigrants are better than me, therefore I need big government policies so that I can keep my job" "Free market conservatives" my ass

I see the "they owe me for feeding/clothing them" everywhere Like.... Imagine having a transactional relationship with your actual child You owe your kids a lot! You are obligated to provide for them, that's what you sign up for when you have a kid. They aren't obligated to do anything for you!

Crime is so bad in Toronto, dozens of cops are available to stand and watch construction.

Alex Bozikovic@alexbozikovic.bsky.social

Toronto bike lane removal. When your infrastructure project has huge police protection and the contractors hide the logos on their trucks and gear, you are in the wrong.

Not the point, but seeing this reinforces how much conservatives are treated with fucking kids gloves A bunch of belligerent truckers shut down capital for weeks, and there's nothing the police can do. A Paralympian in a chair protests a bike lane removal, and they're dragged away immediately

Another thing is drivers in this town & province didn’t have to lift a finger of protest to get the bike lanes removed. The other side must expend endless time & money & their bodies in the streets.

Once you realize that we treat people like pollution a lot of municipal politics makes sense

Colleen @cbailey6.bsky.social

It's always nice when we can stop pretending that zoning was ever about separating residential uses from polluting uses and acknowledge that it (a) treats renters as pollutants to be segregated from "real" residents and (b) concentrates them near other polluting uses like large roads. More honest.

gutting to realize that any good decision that is made by a city can immediately be repealed by some chud premier who wants to use cities as culture war wedges It's actually so fucking embarrassing if you voted for either Ford or Smith, no other word for it

AB Premier Danielle Smith announces the province is forcing Edmonton to reverse its infill housing rules, because why would you want an example of market-driving housing affordability in your small-government province? www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xjx2...

BREAKING: Premier Danielle Smith announces province will direct Edmonton to adopt infill housing rules that were in place before 2024, and require Calgary to maintain its current pre-2024 bylaw framework.

I'm unable to put in words how much I despise the people/politicians of Toronto who insist that the city is "full" Most of the city is emptying out. We're stuffing all the population growth onto 3 roads

Alex Bozikovic@alexbozikovic.bsky.social

People are living longer, taking up more space, and having fewer children. Three-quarters of old Toronto declined in population 1971-2021; those areas lost *540,000* people.

Wow thank goodness they didn't vote in a premier who is explicitly trying to hold back economic diversification and investment in new tech and... hang on I'm receiving some news

The thing about cars is that no matter how much space you give them, it is never enough Give them the bike lanes, the parking, tear down buildings to build highways. It doesn't matter, they're still going to take our parks. They'd drive over their mother if it meant they could park 6 feet closer

Dylan Reid@dylanreid.bsky.social

Every year, during the air show on Labour Day weekend, drivers decide they can park on the grass in the waterfront parks and use the Martin Goodman Trail as a road. Despite regular complaints from Walk Toronto and locals, the City has not stopped this. Video from this year. #walkTO

There are a million reasons why housing is unaffordable. The biggest one is that we don't have enough homes Another massive one is that we think it's normal to spend 50% of our income on a mortgage, so prices get bid up to that level. Insane

Thank God there are rules like this or else you would never be able to see the sun in a massive city that gets.... Like 320 sunny days per year

Kirsten Bladh@kerstanley.bsky.social

Why can't LA build more affordable housing? Well, you see, because a building located in an R5(CW) zone shall not cast a shadow on a lot located in the R4 or R5 zone for more than two hours each day between the hours of 9AM and 3PM on the Winter Solstice and 9AM and 5PM on the Summer Solstice.

Doug Ford's Ontario: Bigger cars, faster speeds, no bike lanes, no money for transit, no money for traffic enforcement Every vehicle death is a policy choice

I spent years in an affordable unit, that I did not want to live in, because I just didnt want to have to bid against 20 other people for a """luxury""" rental unit at a place I actually wanted There are tons of people who make over 100k and live in units that could be occupied by those who make 50

Claudia Chender@claudiachenderns.bsky.social

Building expensive homes that people can't afford isn't helping. Closing the fixed-term lease loop hole, real rent control, and supporting non-market housing that people can actually affordβ€”these are solutions that can help people afford places to live now.

Easily my biggest criticism of Chow. The bar *started* in hell regarding transit, and it's still managed to get worse during her tenure, with no plan to improve. More and more slow zones every day

Reece Martin@rmtransit.bsky.social

The two leading candidates are incumbents who have overseen at best a stagnant, and more realistically a declining transit system. Given the starting point thats just remarkable bad.
