When they tell us "there is no alternative," what they mean is "stop trying to think of alternatives." To imagine radically is to move beyond the helplessness of prediction: a radical imagination dares to insist that history is what we make, not what happens to us.

Ron and Cassie DeSantis: These two crooks stole $10 million from a settlement with a charity, wired it to Cassie’s fake “charity,” laundered it through two puppet organizations, and then used it for political ads in an election year. They should be in jail.

The French took their history classes seriously 🙌 For the ones who are saying that violence isn't the answer, please tell that to the billionaires who are poisoning the air you breathe and the water you drink.

Are we ever going to be able to get beyond this caricature of what postmodernism was? Postmodernism did not claim that 'truth doesn't exist.' It argued instead that truth was contextually, socially, and historically produced in relation to power. It very much said "truth exists"!

Raoul Meyer@mistermeyer.bsky.social

Sure, but 90s era French theory and post-modernism that were embraced so easily by Ivy-educated-GenX lefties (like me, and Obama’s cabinet) didn’t help. If one side in a war says that “truth exists,” and the other side says, “but what if it doesn’t?” I have a pretty good idea which side will win.

“Our biggest concerns are on how loose the language is on academic freedom. It opens the door to bad interpretations. SACSCOC also weakened their standard on shared governance. Genuine shared governance is substantially more than requiring ‘faculty input.’” – Todd Wolfson, AAUP President

Still trying to understand how Napster got shut down, but Anthropic is going public and still hasn’t paid us authors yet after stealing our work.

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet

Don’t believe people who tell you ai can be liberatory or any other misappropriation of movement talk or justice frameworks. Find some people who are preparing to rebuild and cast your lot with them. Then read a bit more. Just keep your wits about you because they are trying to run game.

“If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’” crazy how much Mamdani speaks my language

Automated grading of student writing should have been a clear no-go from the beginning. I wrote this over three years ago and I can't believe how many faculty have allowed themselves to be seduced by this. Students rightly see this as betrayal. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/colu...

insidehighered.comDo not leave grading to the machinesSome lines we shouldn’t cross. This is one.

Spoke to a colleague yesterday, really smart, caring, attentive person. They didn’t know AI can be used to grade, another form of cheating. But students I’ve spoken to sure know, & believe a number of their profs are doing it. Some think, “If profs aren’t going to read my work, why shld I write it?”

O hey Reminder that in (homophobic) '94 as Dookie was blowing up, Green Day picked queercore Pansy Division to open for them + a lot of venues pressured them to drop them as openers -- Green Day told the venues they wouldn't play if PD didn't - and the venues (mostly? all?) backed down. huh.

Occasional reminder that pedagogy should be eccentric and calibrated to the uniquely bizarre access you have managed to cobble together in order to crack open a complicated form of understanding.

Private equity is looting our communities. It's everywhere—our healthcare, our food, our housing, and our businesses. It's unacceptable. We need to get private equity out of our lives now.

“AI IS INEVITABLE AND YOU BETTER ACCEPT IT AND IT MIGHT MURDER YOU BUT ACTUALLY SLOW DOWN SO WE CAN MANIPULATE THE MARKET A LITTLE MORE” this is all such bullshit.

It took four reporters at the Financial Times to put this Trump campaign press release together and none of them could bother to note that this proposal is wildly illegal.

Oh my gosh, the best political video on YouTube just got updated after a decade and a half and it's still just perfect! It visualizes something that I've talked about a lot since the first video came out: The real problem is the billionaire class. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Gxl...

I’m not saying we should shed a tear for the financial impositions faced by multimillionaires. It’s just an illustrative point that the billionaires have *so much* money. They have so much more wealth than you imagined. This visualization has gotten much worse since 2012: youtu.be/QPKKQnijnsM?...

I’m a Dartmouth professor. Pres. Beilock implies in this piece that she speaks for us as a college. She does not. I don’t permit AI in my classroom. Not because it stole my work; because as I wrote in @chronicle.com, most of my students hate it—and feel betrayed by the college—even more than I do.

The Atlantic@theatlantic.com

Many educators are trying to make AI simply go away—but in doing so, they are abdicating a sacred commitment that has guided American higher education for centuries, the president of Dartmouth College, Sian Leah Beilock, argues.

Astounding that somebody could write "Are We Engineering Physical Activity Out Of Daily Life?" and not be talking about decades of making cars the easiest way to get around cities

Another 'e-bike' article in which the writer - in this case, a public health researcher - fails to specify whether they're discussing electric motorbikes, or electrically assisted pedal cycles (which actually provide higher intensity physical activity than walking). www.forbes.com/sites/bernad...

Yale’s Office of Public Affairs banned reporters from Yale’s campus today. It’s corroborated by Francie Diep in her story for the @chronicle.com. This was an attempt to squelch press coverage today of the rally protesting Yale’s attacks on freedom of expression, their pending deal with Trump. 1/
