more plainly: your goats are aging out at best, washed or dead at worst. the youth of today deserve the same inspiration you did at their age. if that means something to you it’s our turn to step up - what are YOU gonna do about it?

he's 100% right. endless sequels, "spiritual successors", AAA third-person shooter with special-vision mechanic frankensteins, and nostalgia-bait are where actually novel design goes to die. we've barely scratched the surface of what's possible to do and feel through this medium

Sakurai Believes Industry Will "Slowly Die" Without Innovation As He Discontinues Game Designers Award (Repost)

partially a failure of business practice for sure, but I also blame low aim - it's not enough to follow your idols, you have to go beyond them

a lack of primary sources and inspiration is also rampant rn, especially in games. so much media these days is _about_ media, rather than about life - playing telephone with daisy-chains of inspiration rather than pulling from life itself. makes it much harder to be original

super good thread, this is a sentiment ive had a hard time verbalizing and ethan puts it so succinctly

it's interesting seeing ppl be excited by the AI recompilation->bashing games into each other trend - I guarantee you every one of your favorite games has at least 1 thing you can't get anywhere else; having everything you want whenever you want it is the opposite of interesting

even worse I've been seeing a lot of "FINALLY we can fix [non-standard mechanic within game] with [homogeneous version the person likes]", which is the most flattening way to look at something idiosyncratic

rough edges, quirks, and "jank" (a term used WAY too wantonly) are a consequence of actual artistic innovation, and ultimately the things you remember once the experience is over. this is yet another way AI and modern "content" thinking are killing our ability to appreciate shit

this is one of the those things that's hard to get across to people who don't practice design but the most potent additions are usually by subtraction. ultimately games are constraints on your actions within a time period - you could argue a game is defined by what you can't do

even in derivative games ("x meets y" type designs) there's usually some level of intentional mitigation of the result of putting 2 things together to synthesize something cohesive out of em rather than just duct-taping 2 ideas together

the only way to really know if a game is fun (or how to make it fun) is to play it, unfortunately there is a degree of sunk cost you just gotta accept. there's def a balance to strike though, especially when energy/resources are limited

otoh, if you're doing something more simulative or systems-driven, grabbing some pen and pad before dealing with digital implementation might be the move. e.g. your citybuilder with unique urban planning mechanics COULD be modeled with cards more easily than code, why bother w the computer

that's why it's important to make a lot of games the long way (write it out, prototype, flesh it out, ditch or finish it) to develop the sixth-sense going forward, esp for solos/indies. after you've got a few under your belt you'll know what form your design doc or prototype needs, if at all

the degree to which you have to play/mess with a game to evaluate it also varies WIDELY between genres. generally the more an idea is rooted in a specific interaction/sensation/novelty, the more urgently you need to prototype it. e.g. paper prototypes for a racing game are (likely!) a waste of time

what's the status of #godot these days for commercial usage? it's feeling more and more likely I'll need to switch from Unity in mid-term future

I'll be running the website differently this year, with more of an emphasis on not only dev updates but also with fun writings from myself and hopefully others about games, art, and things to be excited about. I'd like to make it a positive corner of the internet like the ones I'd haunt as a kid

updated our site today, we've got the best 404 page in the biz hands down https:// virtuoso.world
