ok, I am now over 1k followers (!!!) and have a new job, so new pinned post: hi! I'm Erick. I just started work as the new Data Management Coordinator in the Data Science Centre at EMBL. Most of my work is on open-source tools to help people manage their data. Glad to have you here!

Slept for about 3h before waking up in the middle of the night to check on the results for the Brazilian election and how the heck do I go back to sleep now

you know it's one of those weeks when your glasses break, you start wearing your backups until the new one arrives, and the backups ALSO break.

waiting for the Eurostar today an aggressively American dude behind me was explaining some people he just met about his trip through Europe and how "chatGPT planned everything". Imagine spending thousands on a vacation statistically guaranteed to be mid

Are you a biologist working with microscopy images? A computer scientist wanting to work with microscopy data? Their boss??? None of these, but curious how AI has transformed microscopy image analysis? 🔬🤖 This one's for you: 📄 doi.org/10.1146/annu... More in the thread! 🧵

You bet I'm willing to travel halfway across Germany to vote in the Brazilian elections today. Can't let them shits back in. (Currently in Ulm, on my way to Munich)

woke up early today so I can dig into the fun project of converting playstation save files between what I get from MiSTer and what I can use at a "regular" emulator. Made even more fun by the fact I'm on Linux.

Research software is costly and time-consuming to produce because it requires focused time from developers who have invested years learning to master their craft, just like art. There is nothing to celebrate about relinquishing intellectual expertise and mastery in favor of fast and cheap.

This article seems to celebrate the shift from poor support for #software #engineers in research to pretending they aren't needed at all. Did we spend 2 decades consolidating fragmented software ecosystems into platforms only to see them dissolve through "vibe coding"? www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Here's Italy playing the rare 2-1-2 zone. It didn't work. (I'm doing whatever the "watching the women's world cup in person" equivalent is of touching grass.)

I would love to try and discover where the idea that there's a city named "Sao Paolo" has come from. It appears EVERYWHERE. There is no language where it's "Sao Paolo". I can live with "Sao Paulo" because tildes are hard for some people. Call it Saint Paul. San Pablo. San Paolo. But NEVER Sao Paolo.

big walk is excellent (as expected). The structured puzzles are a lot of fun, the small and big discoveries are wonderful, but what really sold me on it was the way a small thing like "I pressed the wrong button and threw an important item off a cliff" can turn into a whole 10-minute mini-saga.

I'll be streaming more Natsu-Mon every day this week in the (European) mornings -it gets hot my computer room! Feel free to come hang out, have breakfast, try to fall asleep, whatever floats your boat.

I cannot emphasize enough how ABSURDLY cool The Message from Deep Space is. I'm like 20% through it and I'm already in awe at how much cool puzzling they managed to cram in there.

this is a regular reminder that, whatever you use to create QR codes, check it resolves to the address you want, and not an intermediary. You don't want, say, to put posters all over a research institute that suddenly resolve to a page full of scammy ads and malware.
