Writers! We're now finished with our first round reads for volume 74, issue 1. If you snail-mail us something now, we won't read it until February. And anything left over from earlier this year will either be rejected or moved onto Submittable next week. Thank you for your work and your patience!

Something you may not know, all our issues since volume 54 are available as high-quality PDFs to read on your tablet or e-ink device, for just a few bucks. If you want to support us, this is a great way...these are terrific magazines at an unbeatable price, and you get them immediately

Hello, a couple of notes about submissions! First, we are getting a lot of snail-mail subs without SASE included, and also a lot of emails asking why we haven't responded to subs sent last year. These are correlated! We really need the SASE or a stamped postcard if you want a response.

Also, you can snail-mail us anytime but keep in mind our editors' reading periods are Feb-Mar and Sept-Oct. If you submit in April or November you might not hear for a long time, unless our EIC gets some free time to clear the decks. (If he likes it, he'll save it for the next reading period)

We have reached our paid submissions cap for issue 74.1! The free weekend, however, is still to come. I wonder if it will be the weekend soon. I wonder if that will be the one...

We are just shy of 100 subs away from our cap...this is the fastest we've ever experienced. If you want to submit for 74.1, today's the day...or you could check back to see if next weekend is the free weekend!

EPOCH@epochliterary.com

We are already more than halfway to our cap for this cycle, so if you have something for us, send it along! The free weekend (coming soon...maybe?) has its own separate cap, so, don't worry that you might miss it. Although that will also fill up fast...

Two new posts up on the blog today, as we prepare for our August submission period! First, assistant fiction editor Fia Zhang Swanson interviews novelist Banana Yoshimoto. "Writing novels is neither fun nor therapy for me."

"I will never use it, of course, because I like making things, and I don’t hate myself, even when the things I make don’t turn out so good. If you hate yourself and everything you do, you will love AI, because it negates the self, and when you use it, you are doing nothing."

73.2 is at the printer, and 74.1 opens for submissions in two weeks! Please note we have a new AI policy that you can read on our submission page (TL;DR: we don't want AI-generated text), and a blog post from our editor on the subject, linked below.

Today on the blog: assistant editor Hafsa Zulfiqar interviews poet I. S. Jones about her new book BLOODMERCY: "I have always loved declarative lines in a poem, especially as a woman, there is a very strong and commanding power and being able to say something and then it is so."

We've just added Timi Sanni's lovely review of Gbenga Adesina's collection Death Does Not End at the Sea. Timi: "For the speaker of Adesina’s poems, there is a silence in the language of the dead that must ring out in the song of the living."

The answer to shit like this, no matter how politely/sensitively put, should always be a resounding Fuck You

Not to pick on EBSCO, who we enjoy working with, because I'm sure all distributors of print and digital media will be doing the same thing. But this is appalling and everyone should say no. For one thing, we don't have the rights to this work after we publish...it reverts to the writers!

If any editor out there is considering this deal with the devil, be sure to get express consent from every single one of your contributors, and be prepared to pay them every cent of whatever pittance you receive, because this work doesn't belong to us, it belongs to them.
