Every year I set up a super simple spreadsheet to handle recommendation letter requests (& other closely aligned requests). i ❤️ my lil spreadsheet & also ❤️ that lots of us in academia end up inventing standard office workflow from first principles.

if you are a fellow academic i HIGHLY recommend a lil spreadsheet, particularly as rec. letter season heats up: it keeps those obligations from slipping through the cracks but--more importantly--it keeps the fear that you missed one at bay. makes the whole thing way less amorphous.

I’ve been low-key freaking out about every possible permutation of the midterms, including attempts from Trump to subvert or taint the results. One small thing that helped is voting early. If you’re freaking out too I promise u that your vote counts & that voting will make u feel better.

NEW from me: The top Democrats on the House and Senate intelligence committees say they are operating under the presumption that President Trump and his allies will allege fraud related to this year's midterms in order to justify election interference.

Assuming Counterpoint is included in the Catapult news, that means that 20% of this year's National Book Awards longlist for fiction was published by imprints that will no longer exist in their current form by the time of awards night.

super SUPER excited & proud that my story “Commission Piece” made the Other Distinguished Stories of 2025 in this year’s BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES.

(I know I’m supposed to be super quiet & cool about these things & act like I’ve been here before, but you know what? No. I freaking love this story. I’m so glad others did too.)

I am in Juan's current Novel In A Year cohort (the next one starts January 2027), and no exaggeration, it has been the best writing year of life. For real, DO NOT miss this chance!!! #writersofbluesky

Love this trio (of novels & people both). My all-time favorite Straub is FLOATING DRAGON (not in this LoA edition), but GHOST STORY is incredible and Straub was and is a guiding light for the kinds of things I love to write.

Venture into the haunting fiction of Peter Straub with celebrated authors Grady Hendrix, Kelly Link, and Emma Straub (editor of the new LOA edition of her father’s work) at @columbiauniversity.bsky.social next week, 10/27. RSVP for this free in-person event: www.eventbrite.com/e/ghost-stor...

Trump: "It's going to be the greatest ballroom and military complex combination ever built!" (Has any ballroom/military complex EVER been built?!)

It really is an amazing book & owe @petersagal.bsky.social huge thanks for pointing me to Ben Wickey's monumental MORE WEIGHT--an exhaustively researched, gorgeously rendered account of the Salem Witch Trials. Super dense, super rewarding.

Friends, I have been absolutely devouring this 1950s novel (recommended by @fulmerford.com) about Vikings, and now all I want to do is watch Viking-related content. i know there's a lot out there... what's good? (I have seen: The Northman)

The @morningtransport.bsky.social always delivers but this James Morrow story is brilliant and as playful and surprising as anything Morrow has done (and he's done plenty of playful, surprising, brilliant things): www.sundaymorningtransport.com/p/john-and-t...

Exile in Bookville hosted the launch event for the English and Spanish editions of Latine horror anthology Something Followed Us Home (Primero Sueño). The anthology’s editor, Cynthia Pelayo (r.), was joined at the event by contributors and authors Ananda Lima (l.) and Juan Martinez (c.).

I wore a camel blazer & a black turtleneck for last night’s (amazing) reading at the Hemingway House & channeled Jack Cassidy in Columbo’s “Murder by the Book” or possibly Hemingway’s stuffed muskrat.

Cool writers reading in a cool setting - go check it out, Chicago-area people!

Me & so many amazing people read you ghost stories TONIGHT (Friday 10/16) in Oak Park's Hemingway House! Join us!

I didn't include my favorite part, where the reviewer basically says that me & @anandalima.bsky.social are pioneers of the vending-machine horror canon (lol Ananda got there first & I'm sure it 100% inflected my story)

-- One of the alerts is for a miniature replica of the protagonist’s dead ex-girlfriend’s childhood home . . . It’s such an interesting, unique premise, a slight warping of the mundane, just enough to make you go, “wait, what???” -- ❤️ ty @lightspeedmagazine.com !
