You wont believe it, but addition and multiplication don't have the same neutral element For addition, the neutral element is 0, while for multiplication, it's 0!

Whenever I open Bluesky, typing "BS" reminds me that social media shouldn't be taken too seriously.

"Waaaah! You don't let me play so nobody can play!" It's impressive how close this is to the most stereotypical kindergartener temper tantrum you could make up. Obviously this is comparably insignificant, but still. It's like he actively tries to sound unfit for office.

you gotta be kidding me

Evolution: "this gene idea sounds great, you can make a couple of things whose goal is to reproduce themselves and they get better at it with time!" Monke: "let's cultivate these _other_ species! Also, let's invent the condom!" Evolution: "... wat"

XKCD references are second nature to us CS nerds, but the average person knows maybe 538, 2347, and 927 by number alone. "And 2501, of course." Of course.

Migrating my account to @eurosky.social took maybe 20 minutes – and 5 of those were probably just because I failed to notice the password reset email for the migrated account, and wondered why the old one wasn't working...

I found @legaleagle.tv's video on the topic pretty good too nebula.tv/videos/legal... www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2ro...

🇪🇺BKA (German Federal Criminal Police) releases new stats on #ChatControl: NCMEC/US tech reports have never been so unreliable! In 2025, 52% of flags were legally irrelevant. As a result, 113,000 private photos, videos & chats were wrongfully exposed (+14%)—a new record. 🧵 1/6

TIL that a piece of software licensed under Apache 2.0 is not open source if it is maintained by a company. At least that's the gist of what I read before I was blocked.

ensko@ensko.at

OSI disagrees. So?

I think that's backward, in fact. In this world, open source maintainers need to earn money. I think it's great when open source itself can pay the bills. bsky.app/profile/did:...

I'd also add that Typst GmbH is pretty conscious of the position they're in. They are profitable (by their own statements) and have not accepted VC money. So there's no shareholders who could try to extract more from them.

The chart made me laugh (in a painful way.) It's part of this incredible story: projects.propublica.org/why-carbon-c...

Amanda Kolson Hurley @amandakhurley.bsky.social

Incredible chart from @propublica.org. If you don’t follow enviro stuff closely, your instinct might be that the hold-your-nose solution (carbon capture from fossil fuels) would be the “pragmatic” one versus covering Earth in solar panels, which seems utopian. In fact it’s the opposite

Interested in how the "we'll walk to Metlife Stadium" – "no you can't" shit talking will turn out. We're talking about 10km direct distance from Manhattan. Not nothing, but also not massive – at least if you were in an area with basic walkability. ^The most intriguing aspect of this WC, really

Am I missing something, or can you not navigate to a post's parent on Bluesky? Like, given the post bsky.app/profile/ensk..., how can you read what it was in reply to? This *has* to be supported, right?

If you're interested in using grebedoc/git-pages, my blog has a Forgejo Actions setup that deploys an Astro site to it: codeberg.org/ensko/blog/s... (the custom withastro action is there to skip the upload-artifact step that doesn't work on Codeberg; the basic Grebedoc setup is more "vanilla")

Step 1: advise customers to put limited permission Google Maps API keys in their frontend Step 2: allow spending limits to be automatically increased from $250 to up to $100,000 Step 3: silently upgrade the Maps API keys so that they can access Gemini 🎉 Congratulations you enabled fraudsters! 🎉

"the guidance from Google is you're supposed to load [your Google Maps API key] in your front end. So we did that, and all of a sudden they changed the keys so that the Google Maps key, which is exposed publicly, could be used for Gemini, and then they didn't disclose that to customers"

"according to Google [spending caps] can be automatically upgraded to $100,000 – without user input – if the user has spent a total of $1,000 throughout the life of the account, and the account is more than a month old." Should have known these limits are to protect Google, not you!

"The first part of that statement is false ... Given the obvious untrustworthiness of that half of the statement, we didn't bother wasting any time trying to evaluate the second part." I wish more news outlets were so direct in pointing out misinformation by primary sources! Facts, not statements!

When I hear about AI sycophancy, and how having too much agreement from chat bots is not good for a person's social skills and general tendencies, I can't help but wonder if there is any difference between that, and how rich and powerful people have much longer been surrounded by human sycophants...
