⚠️ The plastic we live with every day is quietly poisoning us ⚠️ We’ve released our shocking research: 92.8% of the chemicals we assessed in everyday plastic items are linked to cancer, infertility and heart disease. Almost none are controlled.

Solutions exist: the Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency, area-based management tools, and Article 5 of the WTO fisheries subsidies agreement, which bars subsidies for fishing on the unregulated high seas. Governments need to act. Read the Global Charter here:

Brazil has chosen. 🇧🇷 Lula’s win allows us to keep rebuilding Brazil’s environmental governance, and renews our hope to continue to protect the Pantanal wetland. Now is the time to stand alongside Brazil in the defence of its natural heritage and invest in a shared future. 🌎 📷 #1: Ricardo Stuckert

🐟 EJF welcomes the European Commission’s Vision 2040, which sets out its strategic direction for securing healthy ecosystems, thriving businesses and coastal communities 👏 Existing initiatives such as the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) can help deliver this Vision, matched with greater transparency.

“Europe already holds many of the tools needed to deliver it, from the CFP to a strengthened fisheries control system... What is needed now is the will to close implementation gaps.” This clear vision is only the starting point - it’s time for this ambition to turn into real, tangible action.

🐟 Europe's fisheries need action, not another reform process. The Common Fisheries Policy #CFP is not broken - the European Commission’s own evaluation found that it was fit for purpose. Our message to the Commission is simple: implement, enforce and invest. Don't reopen the CFP.

The Commission's own evaluation says the CFP is fit for purpose. The gap isn't the law, it's enforcement. On 28 Oct, Vision 2040 must commit to implementing the Common Fisheries Policy, not reopening it. Europe's fisheries need action, not years of uncertainty. #CFP

🌊 We’re #Hiring a Campaign Director to lead the implementation of our flagship campaign to defend and secure strong, science-based and fair ocean policies during the current European policy cycle. Applicants should have strategic vision & credibility in senior policy spaces. Apply by 3 November:

The report lays out what is needed: selective fishing gear, digital monitoring and real transparency on what is caught, kept and thrown back. We do not need to reopen the Common Fisheries Policy. To save fish populations & protect fishers, we need to ensure it is actually implemented and enforced.

🐟 The future of EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is currently under discussion. To weaken the CFP would mean undermining the EU’s credibility and hard-won progress. EU Member States should focus on stronger implementation, not a lowering of standards. Read the op-ed from Ambassador Peter Thomson:

Despite the fact that Chausey is a marine protected area, its maerl beds continue to be degraded by dredging and bottom trawling. What is lost today cannot be rebuilt within a generation. We are taking action to ensure these habitats are protected in practice, not just on paper.

This is not a problem people can solve through their own choices alone. The chemicals are present across thousands of ordinary products, most of them in the form of plastics, yet often unlabelled and invisible. The responsibility to act sits with industry and governments. Read the report:

We are calling on governments to support a strong, legally-binding Global Plastics Treaty which cuts plastic production and controls the most dangerous chemicals at their source. Protecting people from toxic harm is not a technical detail to be bargained away; it is the whole point.

These chemicals are in our food, homes and children's bodies, and almost none of them are controlled. Children are especially vulnerable, with exposure linked to attention disorders, cancer and lifelong reproductive harm. Watch the full film:

ejfoundation.orgPoison Plastics: How chemicals in everyday plastics are harming your…Alarmingly, 83% of chemicals with available toxicity and exposure data are not regulated under any major international agreement.

“We want to see legal, sustainable, and ethical seafood on our plates and in our markets.” Yesterday, EJF CEO and Founder Steve Trent spoke on a panel at OPAGAC’s Hands for the Ocean in @europarl.europa.eu. He called for transparency to end #IUU fishing and human rights abuses at sea. #OceanWeek

The Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency sets out a practical and low-cost set of principles that governments and industry can implement now. “What it needs is political will; it needs engagement from communities, and it needs us all to come together to do it collectively.”

The chemicals inside commonly used plastic products, from food containers and coffee cups to children's toys, threaten human health on a vast scale. More than half of these high-risk chemicals are not regulated at the international level or countries we reviewed. This is a public health emergency.

We’re making the case for a world where the products we use are safe by design. Governments must cut plastic production and control the most dangerous chemicals at source. Everyone should feel safe knowing that the cup they drink from and the toy their child holds will not make them ill.

1️⃣ “Protection that pays” showed that Marine Protected Areas pay off for nature, fishers and coastal communities when they are managed and protected, not just drawn on a map. The #EUOceanAct must put 30% protection of EU waters by 2030, with 10% strictly protected, into EU law.

Plastic has embedded itself in every aspect of our lives, with no signs of stopping. The chemicals inside commonly used plastic items, from toys to coffee cups, are silently poisoning us. We must end this threat to human health. It's time to reduce plastic production and consumption. 🗞️ @cnn.com:
