extremely embarrassing that playing a potential clinching WNBA Finals game at a high school gym. no excuse for it

Got an email today from a former graduate student who fled her home in Afghanistan in 2021, coming to the U.S. to study journalism. She always struck me as one of the bravest people I ever met, and her message carried the proof: she has become an American citizen & wants to serve her new nation.

She knows we are not a perfect country and that we have lately closed our doors to asylum seekers such as herself. She has dedicated herself to the rest of us anyway. That's the country I want for all of us.

If we had kept images on the Internet the way they were when dial-up was the main way to connect - when you had to wait forever and then stitch together multiple files to make one picture - that would be preferable to what we have in some ways.

adding pictures to the Internet was a mistake

Chat, is it good to not stop a potential pandemic?

Annie Waldman@anniewaldman.bsky.social

This is terrifying. A bird flu outbreak has been raging uncontrolled on a mink farm for months. Experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. And officials are refusing to act. What a story from @natlash.bsky.social: www.propublica.org/article/bird...

These numbers do not mean that Harris will lose. At most, they are an indicator of Democratic enthusiasm, but again, the 1st District doesn't have that many Dems.

Just finished reading Bob Woodward's piece in the New Yorker and it confirms my only personal experience of him, when he invited the Post's investigative team over to his house for breakfast ~20 years ago: the man is an odd duck.

Maryland not only fired the football coach, they apparently fired all the athletic staffers who understand that they work at a public university. Crazily wrong behavior to call the cops on student journalists standing in public.

Well past time for news organizations to recognize Meta for what it always has been: a company only interested in its own products, not yours.

Hanaa’ Tameez@hanaatameez.bsky.social

NEW: Virtually every news organization has a Meta business account. Meta’s new terms say it can scrape websites “associated with” those accounts—and use the content to “train” its products. @andrewdeck.bsky.social and I on what this means for publishers: www.niemanlab.org/2026/10/meta...

Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night. Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.
