Stunning!!

Tom Skerritt and Veronica Cartwright on the set of Alien (1979) #filmsky

We are often drawn to believing the version of a story that makes us look the most heroic for believing it, irrespective of its truth.

“What you do is hide your deep need to hide, and you do this out of the need to appear to other people as if you have the strength not to care how you appear to others.” Infinite Jest

Let’s all just admit we’re waiting for the director’s cut of The Dog Stars to come out before we actually watch it.

Lifeforce (1985) Directed by Tobe Hooper starring Steve Railsback, Peter Firth, Frank Finlay and Mathilda May. Based on Colin Wilson's 1976 novel The Space Vampires.

why does this feel like even more of an emotional gut punch to me now youtu.be/1Rx_p3NW7gQ?...

I watch this one every few months, usually as a double feature with 12 Angry Men. And Montgomery Clift USA incredible in it; a terribly underrated actor.

Really loved the incredibly violent, and ultimately very thoughtful, The Death of Robin Hood

What if we are the grabby aliens?

when I was young I thought this looked dumb now it is my sleep paralysis demon

Watching El Cid and thinking that Lynch’s Dune is really Anthony Mann on acid

mood

Sure, compared to the top-shelf-Stephen-King-ness of ‘Widow’s Bay,’ Netflix’ ‘Below’ is an issue of Creepy comics…but I damn LOVE Creepy comics

Adam Savage just proclaimed his love for David Mamet’s ‘Spartan’ and I’ve rarely felt so seen

Maybe my favorite line in tv history

Tom Cruise’s Digger has flopped spectacularly – but I think it is a misunderstood masterpiece

The twist is Digger is a f^cking masterpiece

recurring thoughts while watching Anthony Mann’s underrated Fall of the Roman Empire: - This movie is the Kingdom of Heaven if its time And - Oh hell this really is happening

This movie is well-loved, but critically it’s radically underrated; one of the best written, best made films of the decade.

The Hitcher is on the Criterion Channel. And if that sentence doesn’t excite you, you have not seen The Hitcher.

hey @criterion.bsky.social you are leaving money on the table

Whatever you do, don't smoke an entire brisket at a job interview, it's a lot of equipment to bring in, it takes a really long time to do it right and those conference rooms have notoriously poor ventilation

I was neutral on ‘gif,’ and chafe at ‘on accident,’ but I will say I’m pro on the plural of ‘vampire’ being ‘draculas’

Okay, I’ll say this much, the dreadful corporate slurry that is the Supergirl movie did at least prompt me to read the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which, in wildest contrast, was incredibly beautiful, timeless, and moving. So thanks, I guess?

a reminder that any opinion I post on anything should be viewed through the lens of knowing that, for good or ill, Tenet is one of my favorite films

I would like to nominate "Something Wicked This Way Comes" (1993) to have its original camera negatives scanned, cleaned up, and released on 4K Ultra HD Bl-ray! What Disney-made films do you want to see released in 4K? #4K #4KUHD #4KBluray #bluray #PhysicalMedia #BlurayCollector #Disney

I think we need a new version of Network where Howard Beale mutters softly into his lav mic “I’m numb as hell, and I’m probably going take this till I’m dead.”

I used to post this to point out what’s happening for a political group we can all easily imagine, but in fact I think nearly all of us have these symptoms now. centerofbalancecounseling.com/signs-you-ar...

Good goddamn did I love Sugar season 2

Outland (1981) Directed by Peter Hyams

How you all doing, my fellow consensus-effect-dominated peeps?

The Face of Another a wild watch in the era of social media

The Thing From Another World is the His Girl Friday of alien monster movies; the dialogue is brilliantly written and so dense it’s insane.

9/11 infected us with its perpetrators’ radicalization; us/them thinking is now the business model for all media, leading us unable to talk to each other constructively about almost anything at a time when we desperately need to be able to. Instead, we have become terrorists to one another.

what I really want from the Dune franchise is a Parks and Rec style show that follows this guy

I think that the Dark Forest solution to the Fermi paradox is highly unlikely, but it’s resulted in some excellent sci-fi, so I’m all for it. It’s no surprise however that this has grown in popularity in the social media age; we look for fantasies to justify our poor social choices all the time.

Sugar season 2 is the best noir I’ve seen in decades. God damn do I love tight thematic work.

Watching a Carpenter Classic, Prince of Darkness. Freaking me out just like it did when I was sixteen, though for slightly different reasons

If i woke up in a tub of pink jelly with wires stuck into my head and was told that the world I thought was real was actually just a New Yorker thinkpiece from 2022 I would say yeah okay this makes sense

I have high hopes for Netflix’ Lonesome Dove, but no matter how it turns out, it’s an unqualified, universal good that it’s getting people to pick up the novel, which is high in the running for the best American fiction I’ve ever read.
