Seems timely to cross-post a thread of mine from the Bad Place, about karyotyping: essentially, examining people’s chromosomal arrangements. This can be done for many reasons, but in this case, I’m focusing on bigoted arsehats thinking they should test for sex chromosomes. Copy pasta, let’s go! 🧵

Reckon this video qualifies as a timeline cleanse. *clears throat* DRAMATIC VOICEOVER: Gotta watch those dangerous rottweilers! They’re so aggressive! Look at what happens when this tiny cat——oh. Huh. Never mind then.

We got the gentlest puppy in the litter on request, because we also tend to have cats; he is the *sweetest* little guy. Acquiring the most fearless tiny cat by selecting the runt of *that* litter was not deliberate, but I’ll take it.

(sometimes he does react, to do gentle play bounces at her. She’ll pounce, and scamper off; he’ll chase her round the corner, sniff, wag tail, play bounce; she’ll do “flurry of blows” at his nose — claws ALL the way in — and scamper off; rinse, repeat.)

The replies and quotes to this were full of polio vaccine and antibiotics but dudes. Smallpox. We eradicated smallpox so hard that people don't even think about it anymore. A disease that is estimated to have killed 300 million people in the 20th century alone is just GONE.

7. THE ONES WHO STAY An asexual queer medium struggles to form connections, until he light-heartedly agrees to a date with a ghost- and finds himself facing a murderous revenant. It's about connection, music, and what it means to be truly seen and heard. . [wrong title on image is 100% my fault]

(This one's mine. MY GHOST BOYS. I love them so much, and I keep staring at the title, as if it can't really be here in this book, as if *that's* the ghost, and I am so excited that it's actually going out into the world with all these other amazing stories.)

This story picks that thread and follows where it leads. It’s sweet and kind and fun; a tale well told. (I couldn’t say too much about the others without giving the game away, this one I can give a bit more space too. I love them all, genuinely). Bedtime for me, more stories tomorrow!

Tomorrow in… ADHD time that is. 4. WHAT WAKWAKS WANT: HALVE YOUR CHILD AND EAT IT TOO Holy shit, this story is genuinely spine-chilling — spooky, scary and confronting, horror at its best, tangling together themes of isolation, consumption, and the aswang monsters of Filipino folklore.

3. THE CASE OF CUPID’S BOW An aroace witch and her platonic bestie (also a witch) team up to investigate cases of paranormal mayhem… while also confronting the anxieties inherent in found family, where there’s no real word for the deep connections that form outside of romantic/partnership.

It’s a quirky tale that also hits me right in the heart— I’ve often felt that found family can sometimes feel like a bill of goods, because some of those people didn’t need to find it, and you’re often aware that you’ll never come first with the people who come first with you.

1. FALLING INTO PLACE An angel Falls — literally — and, while recovering in the wreckage of a newly human body post-terminal-velocity, finds a name that feels right and a space where they can breathe; and mourns who they used to be. Some truly lovely turns of phrase, a real sense of embodiment.

2. BRIMSTONE AND BISCUITS A short encounter between demon and apprentice exorcist that is both comical and unexpectedly wholesome, with a reminder on how empowering it can be to both know oneself, and to read the fine print. Delightful.

This won’t be reported widely, but Jason Arday has been cleared of plagiarism for a second time. Still nobody has been held accountable for this man’s death.

A reminder: Jason Arday was innocent. "A fresh investigation by scientific publisher Taylor & Francis has concluded without substantiating plagiarism allegations against Jason Arday, the former Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cambridge."

I ended up shifting the biomass up the hill to the burn-off pile in the front yard using my drysuit dive bag, which is VERY sturdy and can be worn as a backpack. …it took WEEKS to get rid of the smell of rotting vegetation. I’m not doing that again.

…I may have digressed somewhat from the original point. Ahem. Fountain pens, pretty inks, murdering weeds, and insulation. Cheers, Doc out 🌱

HOLY SHIT THAT GIVES ME AN IDEA. The idea is to go to an op shop and buy secondhand backpacks and fill them with weeds. I’ve done something similar when clearing the red cestrum out of the back yard (because puppy. Every part of that plant contains fucking neurotoxin).

The most effective way to dispose of the red cestrum was to chainsaw the actual trunk (Michael’s job), then dig it out — which involved a combination of Annabelle (my beloved mattock), loppers, a shovel, and sheer muscle. But actually removing it? Several 2-3m shrubs? Uphill?

My next task actually is to take the loppers up to the top of the yard, where a couple of the sycamore maples stumps are sprouting new branches. Tenacious motherfuckers. There’s also SO MUCH ONION WEED and yes hand weeding that feels Sisyphean but I have moss and violets so I cannot spray.

The most challenging thing about our yard is the slope. It’s exhausting to work on (mostly landslip risk 3, but right at the top it’s 7). And the sheer biomass I need to remove is… incalculable. And carrying the weed bag to the green bin is exhausting. What I need is a weed backpack.

Partly because I never knew if we’d need to drive another excavator over my project zone. It felt like surveyor could just rip everything away at any point (she is truly horrible). It felt like my home wasn’t quite *mine.*

But now — presuming the body can manage the load — I can yank out onion weed and ivy and blackberries and holly and sycamore maples and mock strawberries and self-heal and creeping buttercup and nettles and thistles to my heart’s content. If any agapanthus or red cestrum appear, they’re also toast.

The reason these are a bummer and stopped halfway through 2021 is because a storm crushed my house, rendering the DIY insulation somewhat irrelevant, and meaning we couldn’t live there for over two years so all the weeds came back with interest. New lockdown hobby: “get a fucking building permit.”

Since we have just seen our building surveyor fuck off into the sunset (as soon as I have time there will be an EXTENSIVE formal complaint to the BPC), I have finally let myself go absolutely nuts on the yard again. I’ve done a few stints here and there but it felt so uncertain.

Others during 2020 and the first half of 2021 were: - yard work: absolutely going to town weeding a large, steep front yard in a rainforest after years of neglect, and crying happy tears when the moss came back winter - house improvements like DIY underfloor insulation, long postponed

AND YOU SHOULD. Over the next few days, I’m gonna read each of these stories and post excitedly about them. …even mine. Cos why the heck not. So much work and love has gone into this and trust me, you want it in your life. Presuming you love awesome spooky stories, that is.
