We had three extremely inspiring days coming together with a group of people who all think about #effort at our Effort Mini-(Un-)conference in Hamburg: discussing lots of open questions, sharing new ideas, thinking together about the challenges our field is facing, and having a great time! 🧠🚶🏼♀️🍴
Another two inspiring days with Prof. Chris Englert & his team from Goethe University Frankfurt! Many thanks for visiting and for making this such a great tradition 🌍🤝
Excellent scientific exchange, exciting shared projects, and some time to enjoy Hamburg’s landmarks together!

This is a bit of a deviation from my usual effort & boredom research: with Johannes Keyser and @sgluth.bsky.social I have been working on a passion project on what makes a lab good, flexible, and future-proof. Not about AI or stats, but the physical hardware and how devices talk to each other 🤩
🧵
We were delighted to welcome Prof. Dr. Christian Schlenstedt from Medical School Hamburg to our #DHPRlab meeting.
He talked about interdisciplinary considerations to enhance mobility in people with Parkinson’s disease.
Many thanks for your time, insights, and the inspiring discussion!🙏
Yesterday, we got together for our 3rd DHPRL Garden Party to celebrate another great semester.🌿☀️
A huge thank you to all our colleagues and guests who joined us. We were enjoying ourselves so much that we completely forgot to take a group photo... 🥲
Already looking forward to the next one! 🤩
We had the pleasure of welcoming Prof. Dr. Julia Schüler from University of Konstanz to our #DHPRlab meeting.

Thank you for taking the time and inspiring discussions! 🙏
End of a (relatively brief) era in our interim space. 📦 Our team spent today moving our setup into a new, much improved space. We can't wait to get the new lab up. Wanna see it? Very soon! 🔑
We had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Kerstin Brinkmann from University of Geneva to our #DHPRlab meeting.
She talked about explicit and implicit motives and their impact on cognitive and physical effort.
Thank you for taking the time and inspiring discussions! 🙏

Effort ≠ performance 🎯
At the Integrating Effort symposium @ASP, I showed that perceived effort maps non-linearly onto performance. Equal increases in prescribed effort produce disproportionately large increases in performance, likely because of compressed number representation and motor noise 🔢💪

I really enjoyed presenting preliminary findings from our study on the effects of concurrent physical effort on explore-exploit behavior at this year's asp conference in Heidelberg 🚴🏀
Already looking forward to next year 🙃

Had a great time presenting at asp conference in Heidelberg! We dove into how perceived time and effort costs interact in movement-related decisions, and which factors matter most when studying them together.

Really happy to share that my first PhD preprint is finally out!🥳
We suggest that time and effort should be studied together as a shared experiential cost w/@bcheval.bsky.social, @corimartarelli.bsky.social, Dr. Maltagliati, Dr. Chastin, and @wanjawolff.bsky.social

Make sure to check out our latest theory explaining how people search for information; now out in Psychological Review!
@sgluth.bsky.social@jordantdeakin.bsky.social and Jörg Rieskamp
How do people search for information to make efficient decisions?
Our new theory, now out in Psychological Review, suggests that an efficient search rule is (at the core of) the answer. And eye-tracking data support our theory.

A snippet of this week's episode of The Sport Psych Show with Katja Rewitz. Katja and I speak about a fascinating paper she led which examines the explore-exploit framework related to decision making in sport and exercise.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Lorenz Assländer (Uni Konstanz) to our #DHPRlab meeting.

New episode of The Sport Psych Show! On this week's episode "Exploit or Explore: Decision Making in Sport" I speak with University of Hamburg PhD student Katja Rewitz. Katja's research focuses on human sensations and their influence on decision-making and performance behaviour
New preprint 📢
w/ @wanjawolff.bsky.social & @mbieleke.bsky.social we tracked boredom during a cycling task. Perceived effort generally increased over time – boredom didn't. Boredom varied strongly across individuals, and its dynamics predicted persistence beyond effort

We had the pleasure of welcoming Prof. Dr. Erik Bijleveld from Radboud University to our #DHPRlab meeting.
He talked about effort and fatigue, when and why people get fatigued, and their relation to decision-making.
Thank you for taking the time and inspiring discussions! 🙏 @erikbij.bsky.social
Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Prof. Dr. Amitai Shenhav from UC Berkeley to our #DHPRlab meeting. He told us about neural and computational mechanisms of motivation, affect, and decision-making

Here we delve into...
Read this phrase before? When everything you read starts to blur toghether, blame the LLM 😜 With @wanjawolff.bsky.social , we discuss why this happens, how it increases boredom at scale, and why it becomes increasingly hard to escape.

📺 A TV team from NDR visited our @dhprlab.bsky.social to learn about our current research & why boredom plays a powerful role in human behavior.
You can spend three (German, but hopefully not boring) minutes watching it here: www.ndr.de/fernsehen/se...
P.S. Thumbnail is not footage from our lab 😁
📢 New paper 🤩
w/ @katjarewitz.bsky.social & @corimartarelli.bsky.social, we used Bayesian network analyses to study the relationship between exercise boredom, effort value & self-reported exercise behavior.
TL;DR: high boredom & low value -> less exercise

#preprint 📢
Effort usually boosts performance - but not always. We discuss 4 domain-general factors that modulate effort-performance (de)coupling: osf.io/preprints/ps...
TL;DR: A framework on when and why effort-performance links appear to change across domains, timescales & measures.

Truly enjoyed this talk held by Dr. Johannes Seiler 🎉
Interesting to discuss boredom as a signal that feels aversive but also secures us from stagnation 🙌🏼
Thanks for taking your time 👍🏼
Great pleasure to host Dr. Johannes Seiler in our #DHPRLab meeting!
He gave a fascinating talk on how boredom drives exploration and information-seeking, and how neural entropy underlies this process across species.
Thank you for sharing your time and insights 🙏
📺 In the German primetime TV show JENKE Experiment, participants endured three hours of boredom - with a few theory-driven curveballs 😁
A vivid reminder that doing “nothing” can be tough & that boredom really matters.
Very excited to have contributed to this project.
