Been thinking about this in light of the recent election where Québec (the metro area) elected a bucket of deplorables running under a right-wing populist* platform. Thing is, they have identified actual problems, even if their solutions are stupid! *but see also: www.ledevoir.com/opinion/idee...

ledevoir.comPour en finir avec le «populisme»Cessons d’utiliser «populiste» comme synonyme de démagogue, de réactionnaire, d’anti-intellectuel ou d’autoritaire.

I am but a lowly computational linguist who once TA'ed a class in (checks notes) language modeling, many years ago in the Before Times, but (3) seems to be simple enough for any sensible person to understand

"The planned duplex, city documents show, will be more than 15 metres high — far higher than their roughly 11-metre tall home." Exactly how much higher no one can say.

As an Albertan committed to the defeat of the rat menace, not just here but, Insallah, every corner of this broad Dominion, we will recover from this blow and strike back tenfold against Ratatouille and all his friends and family.

Alex Boyd@alexboyd.bsky.social

One of my favourite interview anecdotes from the last couple of years was the government person that pointed out that reported rat sightings in Alberta are (uniquely?) unreliable because so few people in Alberta can accurately identify one. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/s...

When I moved away from there in 1996 it was already pretty weird (in the bad way, not the "Keep Portland Weird" way) outside of a few hectares of central Calgary and south Edmonton. Some things got better for a while, though.

Paul Fairie@paulisci.bsky.social

When I first moved to Calgary in 2006, I would regularly tell people outside Alberta that things were weird but not as weird as they seemed from the outside. Now I tell people that they're weirder.

The context here. It may help to remember that neural networks are universal function approximators. This is why "deep learning" mostly works, because speech recognition, image segmentation, etc, can reasonably be defined as functions (inputs → outputs). "Intelligence" is not even a function!

Iris van Rooij 💭@irisvanrooij.bsky.social

Going to do a thread, using some of my own (incl. older) work, to clear up some of these relevant concepts. Hope it helps builds conceptual hygiene and immunity to hyped claims about “AI” capabilities. 1/🧵

in summary any claim that involves computational modeling of "general intelligence" let alone "super intelligence" should immediately be filed under "not even wrong"

David Huggins-Daines reposted

I am really not saying anything new. We KNOW all this from basic theoretical computer science -- but this knowledge, field, and expertise are being destroyed by LLMs and AI hype too (see also next post)

alors, c'est qui qui parle des «vraies affaires»? (j'ai rien contre St-Tite, c'est une super belle ville à visiter le 50 autres semaines de l'année)

Key takeaway here is that whenever you hear "emergent abilities" your bullshit detector should start screaming. There's a lot of deliberate abuse of terminology going on in this industry, and if you understand the technology but haven't drunk the Kool-Aid you have a duty to push back on it.

Cheryl Rofer@cherylrofer.bsky.social

This is very good. At least four of these points have to do with the general safety points I mentioned yesterday.

To understand why "emergent abilities" are bullshit it is helpful to understand: - The information processing inequality - The problem of non-convex optimization and local minima But you can also just say "bad people do bad things and talk about them on the Internet"

“Canadian Arctic/Lunar nuclear futurism” should give them one of the hottest aesthetics in the game, but instead we get visuals from a low-tier Substack. Guys, I’m begging you, find a graphic designer, give ’em some amphetamines and a stack of sci-fi art books and turn them loose. It’ll be worth it.

Absolument!

One more thing about this. Cities don't have massive budgets. They're considerably less powerful than the feds or the state. But they do have power over land use, which is an extremely important lever. If you're waving land use away as unimportant, you have no business weighing in on city politics.

I really like Jeremy Levine's work on this topic. A singular community will or interest basically doesn't exist. Levine argues that rather than seeking an illusory consensus, we should focus on removing barriers to political participation by marginalized voices. shelterforce.org/2020/09/04/c...

You either welcome the stranger or you don't. There is no "only build housing for the truly morally deserving and/or people I want to hang out with" policy lever, no matter how hard you post about Community Land Trusts.

it's also impossible to separate this from immigration policy. You either believe people should get to live where they want, and make policies to move towards that goal, or you don't.

It’s not noted in the article but unlike EVs our extensive e-bike charging infrastructure also already exists, via any wall outlet. No further municipal investment required. It’s been mentioned before, but e-bikes might be dismissed for government support *because* they’re so cost efficient.
