With more than 520,000 votes earned and a few polls still left to count, Olivia Chow will be elected with the largest raw vote total of any mayor since Toronto’s amalgamation in 1998. (Many more people in the city since Mel Lastman’s days, of course.)

Since Alberta has shutdown this administrations stealth move to try and break Canada, the President is back to the 51 state crap on the stump. Despite the damage that Canadian counter tariffs are doing to specific swing states, it looks like he'll use the winter to ram through more tariffs.

Which would be the absolute dumbest possible option and one that could never be won. While the US could relatively easily invade and occupy Canada, outside of a genocidal pogrom, there is no world in which they could hold it long enough to absorb the population and quell resistance.

Unfortunately, this administration isn't capable of thinking beyond its immediate whims which is why it is imperative for Americans to overwhelm the GOP in the midterms to the point that no amount of money, fuckery and dirty tricks are capable of them reversing it to hold Congress.

The two main options are further trade deals with powers the US sees as rivals and hitting key resources; oil, energy, aluminum, and potash. For all the damage done by the myopic decision to lose a war with Iran, losing its current levels of Canadian oil would be catastrophic for gas prices.

So in the face of escalation, you have Canada forced to make deals like letting the Chinese fund a pipeline to the Pacific and a fueling port for oil shipments. Or seeing electricity flowing at significantly higher costs. All of which the only answer the US would have is a military one.

So Canada is not going to sign a one sided trade deal that cedes any sovereignty to the US like they are demanding. Carney would be driven from office within hours of making that deal even if he wanted to. So escalation is coming, likely broad and hamfisted, but damaging across the board.

The thing is that escalating further puts Canada into a series of limited options that are really bad for the US. Right now, Canada has tariffed price irritants; things that drive prices and inflation in specific states, but don't push any broad shortages or outages for the US.

The problem that the Republicans face is two-fold. First is that for all the economic damage it does to Canada, it does that in spades to the US. Second, escalation isn't that much of a threat any more. Canadians are united in the will to accept financial pain for our sovereignty.

Meanwhile Americans not only have no understanding why Canada is being targeted other than his addled bleats about us 'ripping off' the US, but US opinion polls show significantly more support amoungst Americans for our counter tariffs than the tariffs targeting us.

It has begun. Hopefully as soon as EA starts the firesale of IPs once it starts to collapse around its impossible amount of debt, a good studio will be right there to pick up ME and DA for future games.

The Ukraine deciding that the West has abandoned it and is now burning every Russian fuel target to the ground is a generational rupture. Even if and when Trump is gone, the modern order is gone, dead and buried now.

This iced coffee thing might kill me. Pro tip from someone who works for a recruitment firm. For a professional interview, don't bring anything to put out before an interview but a copy of your CV and a notebook for notes. Most places will offer you a drink at reception or before the interview

The reason being that for interviews, you want to minimize input to what you control. As this site has shown, people have vastly different reactions to minor crap like this, so don't take a possible self own in with you in case the interview is an A-type with strong opinions on outside food.

I don't even accept a bottle of water or anything because, no word of a lie, some people can and will judge you by the way you drink or the frequency. Finish your drink before going into reception or wait until you're done if you want to minimize dumb shit that you could be judged on.

This entire thing almost reads as a parody. A rape cult of AI doomerism based off of Harry Potter fanfic full of Silicon Valley executives. The actual fuck?

So my contribution into apple bluesky. I had a friend who was an apple bounty hunter. He found old orchards and sold the cultivars for hundreds of thousands to companies and farmers.

The funniest part of all of this is how much of modern English Shakespeare flat out invented in his works. I mean, he's credited as the origin of over 1700 words and they're going to adapt him to a language used over 500 years before his birth?

It's not just the cruelty for the sake of cruelty, the omnipresent grift, and the anti-science, anti-reality elements of the modern right wing, but it is the bone deep stupidity of it as a movement that continues to astound me.

When someone ignores the rapid expansion of the denial of gender confirming health care, the criminalization of legal documentations and literally regular and violent attacks in public as no big deal, you know his opinion is really transpeople don't really deserve to exist. What trash.

Colin Lawson@colindlawson.bsky.social

Trans gender people are not denied living their best life in public, and they are not denied social and legal rights. All they are prevented from doing is unilaterally infringing on other groups' rights. We all have the same rights - that does not include the right to overrule the rights of others.
