This is so cool !!

A novel probabilistic approach for identifying stalls, upswings, and reversals in fertility transitions (SURFs 🏄‍♂️ ) by Wheldon et al. #Demography

Caught in Transit: Identifying Stalls, Upswings and Reversals in Fertility Transitions using a Probabilistic Approach Possible stalls in fertility transitions, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, have been discussed frequently in the demography literature. However, the various meth #sociology link

Now, that is a super cool way of applying Caswell's formal demography of kinship framework ! #Demography #Kinship

What can demography teach us about the "gay cousin at Thanksgiving" meme? A lot! If you were born in the 80s, 90s, or 00s, you could have one queer cousin, on average*. Younger cohorts have fewer cousins overall, but still have a strong share who are queer. * for an American woman in 2023.

Day 2 of kinship workshop, we moved into richer terrain with two-sex, time-varying models and spent time unpacking a powerful idea : kin loss and bereavement One striking insight: in India, an individual aged 100 in 2020 would have experienced the loss of nearly 45 kin over their lifetime!

Over a dozen ways to decompose life expectancy, all in one (we hope) friendly interface. Please have a look at the LEdecomp R package cran.r-project.org/web/packages... See the function LEdecomp() for access to all of them. If we left something out, please shout! #rstats #demography #mortality

Demographers & sociologists assemble! I'm looking for papers that use both Generation & Gender Survey and SHARE in the same paper. Don't care about topic, sub-sample, or design - just that it's empirical. Self-promotion is encouraged. #sociology #demography

Average mortality rates are a horrible measure of typical mortality during the first weeks of life. On the day of birth modal mortality is 189 times lower than average mortality. Read more in my recent piece on selection in neonatal mortality.

Hidden population heterogeneity: Using highly stratified neonatal cohort lifetables @jschoeley.com shows how mortality selection acts on the observed distribution of frailties and provides a test for the selection hypothesis of "ontogenescence". www.demographic-research.org/articles/vol...

Here, weird guy from X, I fixed it for you: "If a scientific society wants to be welcoming to [...] students & researchers [from the Global South], does it make sense to hold its next annual conference in a country that's notorious for [being located in the Global South]?" The answer is Yes.
