In 1995, among women 40-49, 64% w/ a PhD had ever married & had kids. In 2024, that share had risen to 78%. No changes b/w 2024 & 1995 among those w/ a 4 yr degree, at 75%. In 1995, among women 40-49 w/ just a HS degree, 85% had ever married & had kids. In 2024, that share had fallen to 69%.

I don't totally agree with this position and also have some questions. I'm curious what characterizes "heavily politicized and oriented around activism" and what is allowed and what is not. For example, much of academic economics has long been deeply intertwined with promoting certain worldviews..

My new article on the “Pig in the Python” argues that the demand for young workers will grow dramatically over the coming decades, likely leading to rising wages, stronger unions, and lower inequality. 1/28

New brief report in @jmfncfr.bsky.social We follow earnings of male same-sex couples in 🇩🇰, 🇳🇱, and 🇸🇪 around the time they become parents. Main takeaway: not much changes for them! Also: no signs of long-lasting specialization based on pre-parenthood earnings or biological relatedness to the child.

Call for Papers! Submit your paper for the conference: 'Kinship Structures, Dynamics and Inequalities', taking place on 8 and 9 June 2026 @mpidr.bsky.social in Rostock organized by @demography.bsky.social, @iussp.bsky.social +coll. Deadline: 21 January 2026 www.demogr.mpg.de/go/kinship-conference

What can demography teach us about the "gay cousin at Thanksgiving" meme? A lot! If you were born in the 80s, 90s, or 00s, you could have one queer cousin, on average*. Younger cohorts have fewer cousins overall, but still have a strong share who are queer. * for an American woman in 2023.

Estimates are derived from a two-sex, time-variant kinship matrix model, to which estimates of the prevalence of queer identity for American men & women are applied. Here, "queer" includes those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or another non-straight identity.

The Household Pulse Survey only provides data for respondents aged 18-88, so kin outside this age range are marked as "unknown." This finding comes with several assumptions, of course. Interested in reading more? Look for a working paper in the coming months :)
