"I want my humans and animals warm, and my computers cold. Fun? Sure! But not cute. That’s a fine line between fun and cute, but I know it when I see it" - @gruber.foo how would "sexy" and "lickable" fit in that spectrum

what tempts me about the iphone duo is the compact iphone-mini-size outer display also i've always wanted an ipad mini so the combo seems ideal for me

of course it's stupid that they're becoming the only allowed shape, but i think it'd be cool if all apps came with squircle and non-squircle options for some reason i feel like i'd be more into other shapes in a desktop computer and more in a classic mac

i'd go further and say that's what i want from computers period. give me a curt AI voice, a curt UI, a curt file system. otherwise we are just allowing computers to pretend they're other things. which can be fun and useful of course but shouldn't be standard imo. the standard should be functional.

TIL that both “consider” and “desire” reflect a Roman obsession with stars, seen in their incorporation of the Latin sidereus or starry. “considerare” (look closely) literally means “to observe the stars” while “desiderare” (long for) likely means “await what the stars deliver”

and that same tasteful and opinionated minimalism explains what makes me keep coming to daringfireball.net every day i mean yeah i really enjoy the writing and care about the topics (mostly), but that barebones website design is just so pleasurable to me...

Cliff Stoll (kooky scientist, Cold War era hacker, klein bottles) published a 1995 essay and then a book claiming the web was overhyped and apparently it became known for being so wrong. But overall I think he really nailed it!!!!!

@gruber.foo no kidding i had a nightmare where daring fireball's design changed completely, including fonts and a white background but worst of all, a substack-like dickover for a newsletter subscription 😭😭😭

"HDI — The US scores 0.938, which is high but ranks below ~15 European countries (Iceland, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, Finland, UK all score higher). Eastern and Southeastern Europe pull the continental average down." (AI-made chart and commentary)

I’ve been very careful to build a high signal fediverse feed and while I do feel I have control over it, I’ve found the issue is that I still fall into the pattern of not stopping to think about what I’ve seen often enough. The content is different but the learned behavior is still the same 🤔
