spot-on @gruber.foo take: "The system dictionary definition of curt: 'rudely brief'. That’s what I want from an AI voice. That’s a computer being honest about what it is" daringfireball.net/linked/2026/...

i'd go further and say that's what i want from computers period. give me a curt AI voice, a curt UI, a curt file system. otherwise we are just allowing computers to pretend they're other things. which can be fun and useful of course but shouldn't be standard imo. the standard should be functional.

same reason i agree those icons for menu items from tahoe were dumb and ugly daringfireball.net/2026/06/maco... same reason why i love daring fireball's blog design that's also why i kinda reject the skeumorphism revival: nohalo.substack.com/i/149866164/...

and i have to say: same reason i have grown to like squircle icons, because they add consistency to the UI as opposed to flamboyant skeumorphism that often becomes tiresome after some time daringfireball.net/2026/07/elim...

of course it's stupid that they're becoming the only allowed shape, but i think it'd be cool if all apps came with squircle and non-squircle options for some reason i feel like i'd be more into other shapes in a desktop computer and more in a classic mac
