2nd week of Bouldering League. In the books. Checked our results from last year and we are scoring 50-60% higher.

Mark@denovich.com

First week of Bouldering League is in the spreadsheet. I think my scores for this session were higher than any session last year. Progress! Extra pleased that I sent the gimmicky climb that involved hanging upside down from a knee-bar for the finish.

Lets see what CVEs were posted today: scroll, scroll, scroll... scroll, scroll, scroll... 48 pages later!

Watching my AppleTV being remote-controlled by claude as it debugs the tvOS version of my music app feels like the future. Also: my music app doesn’t suck

Apple helpfully telling me that I’ve been working out less lately. 💩! Apple unhelpfully broke the shortcut that automatically started my workout.

Unexpected new shoe day! My daughter pulled a 40% off discount from the trick-or-treat bucket at the climbing gym.

She pulled the same discount on the previous trip so I picked up an Edelrid Ohmega.

Pittsburgh where you can have the thermostat set for AC and Heat in the same day.

I’ve known we had flying squirrels for a few years. But tonight was the first time I saw them in visible light. They are pretty cute.

How much vitamin C is too much. These vitamins are the best orange flavored gummies. I can’t help myself.

My least favorite hide and seek: something died nearby by and I have to find it with my nose. When you win, you lose. 🤮 💀🦝

Saw a coyote running down the hill today, around noon. First time I’ve seen one in daylight. Fur almost glowing in the sun, I at first thought it was a fox.

The playlist generation is easily the best I’ve used (admittedly a low bar).

I have working split-horizon DNS with all services having valid certs and available seamlessly over tailscale too. Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!

Burn this chart in your brain for the next time you even feel remotely guilty about cutting out a little early or asking for a fair wage.

New Ui: “Export video from Frigate cam1 at 10:23p to 10:25.“ 🔥tokens🔥 mp4 in my Downloads.

I opened the window expecting this baby opossum (one of 3) but she was completely unfazed and looked like she was going to climb in. First photo blurry due to night mode.

Claude configuring ESP32 devices FTW. In 5 min I went from removing the board from the anti-static bag, to having it post battery/charging/solar data from my van via BT and posting it via MQTT to HomeAssistant.

Using Qwen 3.8 Flash Next 2-bit with DwarfStar4 as the inference engine classifying and providing enhanced captions for all the photos in my library (118k). Going to take about 8 days flat out running on my M3 Max 128GB MBP which amounts to about <$1 of electricity.

First time I’ve ever hurt my back like this before. I was bouldering and fell from about 10’ above the mat, landing on my feet. I didn’t feel anything at the time. Noticed a little stiffness towards the end of the session. After an hour of sleep I woke up and almost couldn’t get out of bed.

By chance I happened to have my phone unlocked as I got to the gym and it started a workout. So not completely useless, just mostly.

OS27 broke my “start workout” automation when I arrive at the gym. Fine, 2hrs and $99 later I’m an Apple Developer, testing an iOS/WatchOS app that does the same thing… And fails in the same way 😭

I lack the imagination/bandwidth to fully utilize my Anthropic 5x Max plan.

7h55m of sleep. A new high score. And I stayed asleep for 4 hours after going to bed. Haven’t done that in years. Please be a trend and not an outlier.

Slept from 12a-4a, that’s the longest stretch I’ve been asleep in probably 6 months, maybe longer.

The family history on my father’s side didn’t extend past about 1910. With Fable’s help and many sessions digging I have hard evidence for Dejanoviči as far back as 1725. They were free peasants who got their land in exchange for hereditary military service.

Fable is doing amazing detective work tracing my roots. My last name has been spelled 7 different ways over the years. Same with my grandfather’s first name. Hooray for computers.

I tested Bonsai 2 27B on a 128GB M3 Max... slow as or slower than Qwen 3.8 27B Q8 (prefill is painful on dense models on a Apple silicon) as the performance drops off significantly with increasing context length. Most damning, non-thinking performance was significantly worse.

PrismML's Ternary Bonsai 2 27B Based on Qwen3.8 27B, Bonsai 2 27B is 9x smaller than its full-precision counterpart while retaining 98.2% of its aggregate benchmark performance.

Might have value for GPU users that have limited VRAM. Dense models have been disappointing on Apple Silicon/unified memory architecture machines.

Apple how did you manage to ship iOS 27 with obviously broken automations. Can’t start a workout automatically. Worse is how unhelpful the error message is: “This action could not be run with the current user interface”

The Shortcuts UI is dogshit too. Want to add a step to a process? Use the Search bar at the bottom (the one that does a completely different function in every other app where it is used)

Something stinky (dead) outside but I haven’t been able to smell my way to the source. I have the unfortunate feeling it will be easier to find tomorrow.

OS27 on Apple TV has somehow fucked up the audio output. Any time a video is played there is a -25% chance that the audio output clips, adding a crackling/clicky noise. Restarting the video seems to fix it.

Started using the issue tracking functionality of my self-hosted Gitea sever. It finally dawned on me that my own projects were getting too big / too numerous for me to track with Markdown files. Should have done it sooner. I think Claude loves it.

I love a good thunderstorm, but that lightning was a bit intense. My ears are ringing. There were about a dozen very close cloud to ground strikes.
