with all the bad news for trans rights recently I think it’s important to highlight some good news good for governor spanberger

Transgender World@transgenderreport.com

Governor Abigail Spanberger quietly ended a rulemaking process initiated in the waning days of former-governor Glenn Youngkin’s administration. The rule would have limited transgender students' ability to play sports and use facilities. www.wvtf.org/news/20... #transgender

The "Pro Life" party showing they're only pro-bullshit and enslavement.

Guardian US@us.theguardian.com

ICE is arresting a record number of pregnant women and teenagers, according to government documents obtained by the Guardian. At the same time, the agency appears to have lost count of how many suffered a miscarriage. 🧵

The US media's response to a film's evidence on Israel's targeting of civilians? Report on the directors possibly losing the citizenship for being brave enough to bring the evidence to light. In no way talk about the evidence itself. Can't risk being anti-Israeli by calling out Israeli war crimes.

cbsnews.comIsraeli official calls for directors of "NAZA" documentary alleging use of AI in Gaza to have nationality revokedThe documentary "NAZA" includes interviews with purported Israeli intelligence officers who claim the systematic use of AI-powered targeting systems in Gaza.

We're only one step away from an officer with a grudge watching your every move from states away. Or, say, someone in Federal government monitoring political opponents to leak videos to favored networks. Not fiction. Not hyperbole. This is actually happening, now.

The Texas sheriff's office that used 80,000 Flock cameras to search for a woman who had an abortion used AI to write a police report about the incident.

American history is filled with examples of white men paying little - if any - penalties when being called out on their lies or outright illegal acts. Ariely fabricated evidence on a paper about dishonesty. And yet he was still given a leadership role at Duke University. Why? Because he was white.

Tressie McMillan Cottom@tressiemcphd.bsky.social

Again. Again. It was just the usual white supremecist double standard the first dozen times. After Arday‘s sad, avoidable tragedy it feels like more than the usual distraction. They want to gaslight us to death. www.dukechronicle.com/article/duke...

Before it's mentioned: yes, Ariely is Israeli-American and not fully caucasian. At this point, in today's politics, it's the same underlying act. His skin is not brown or black, and he's not a woman. Therefore, penalties upon him are far less.

“If that counts as sexual assault then almost every woman has been sexually assaulted”. Yes. Bingo. Almost every woman HAS been sexually assaulted. Many of us have had it happen more than once. The problem isn’t the definition, it’s rape culture.

Saying it louder for those in the back: Parts of our country already endorse using electric shock gloves on disabled children. In our schools. Like cattle.

If you’re grabbed by someone wearing “shock gloves”…your body may convulse involuntarily. It could look like you’re resisting arrest when in reality, you’re in medical distress. The appearance of resistance will embolden ICE to use lethal force. These gloves will kill people.

Nothing says, "We are the most powerful nation on Earth" better than its main braggart being smuggled out of a foreign country in a catering box.

I am particularly looking forward to laughing when the little nugget drops that the "intelligence" of an impending Iranian attack on Trump in Turkey came from the Israelis.

My mom just called to tell me that she went to a museum about the Underground Railroad, where one of the exhibits talked about the locals having horns that they would blow to warn people when the slave catchers were in town “It’s just like your whistles!”

For America's 250th, I read Frederick Douglass’ speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” on the House floor—for the first time in history. His speech endures as a mirror & mandate for us all—to confront our inequities while fighting for an America as good as its promise.

June 1, 2009: GM becomes the fourth largest company in America to declare bankruptcy. In a modern, "the rich can do it, not the poor," the US government helped divide the company in two: one with all the assets, one with all the debt. Just remember: it was fourth largest up to that point... Musk.

May 31, 1921: White supremacists violently invade prosperous black neighborhoods in Tulsa, Oklahoma, decimating 35 square city blocks and killing an estimated 300 innocent people. Some assailants were deputized. The National Guard took 2 days to stop the attack. Over 10,000 were left homeless.

May 30, 1989: Chinese protestors in Tiananmen Square erect a 33' tall statue they called the Goddess of Democracy, to defy the government's crackdown on them. It took 4 days to build, out of foam & paper mâché. Soldiers tore it down on June 4th. Countless replicas have been made around the world.

May 29, 1988: President Ronald Reagan makes his first visit to Mikhail Gorbachev, leader of Russia. They agree on a number of terms, specifically human rights & an arms treaty. A large impact: Russian schoolbooks were updated to recent global events. 3 years later, Soviet Russia would dissolve.

May 28, 1830: President Andrew Jackson signs into law the Indian Removal Act, negating land treaties with Native Americans & forcing them from often prosperous lands to far-away settlements. The Trail of Tears & other effects resulted in thousands of deaths. All because of racist, rich white men.

May 26, 2020: Thousands gather in Minneapolis, in memorial to George Floyd, who had been murdered by police the day before. Over the following weeks, both peaceful and rioting protests would occur in reaction to systemic police brutality. Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder on April 20, 2021.

Mar 25, 2018: Ireland's people vote to nullify their 8th Amendment, replacing it with the 36th. In doing so, they legally back a woman's right to abortion. This is democracy, & a ioving Constitution, in action. Anyone saying Originalism is the only true way can go right the fuck off with themself.

May 24, 1963: Atty Gen. Robert F Kennedy holds a loud & tense meeting with several black rights leaders, who hold his feet to the fire for policy inaction. It is considered the pivotal meeting pushing civil rights law forward. Kennedy's son was 9. Today, he has forgotten all his father stood for.

May 22, 1998: A federal judge rules that the Secret Service can be compelled to testify regarding whether or not Monica Lewinski voluntarily performed oral sex on Bill Clinton. This was the scandal that Republicans used to almost cost him the Presidency. But Trump raping kids? That's okay. Fuck.

May 21, 1881: Clara Barton, a 60-year old nurse, becomes President of the American Red Cross in Dansville, New York. She would continue field operations for 19 years, with her last being to help victims of the Galvestone hurricane in 1900. She then founded the National First Aid Society in 1905.

May 20, 1996: The Supreme Court rules via Romer v Evans that the state of Colorado cannot restrict local governments from passing laws that protect gay & lesbian rights. It would form the basis of the Court's ruling against the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013, paving the way for same-sex marriage.

May 19, 1828: President John Quincy Adams signs the Tariff Law into effect, raising tariffs 35-45% on some imported goods, under the guise of protecting the American economy. Massive political unrest followed, leading to then President Andrew Jackson threatening war against South Carolina.

May 17, 1954: The Supreme Court unanimously rules that segregation in public schools is illegal. Unanimously. Everyone agreed. It set an Extremely Strong Precedent. Which jackasses like Clarence Thomas, Stephen Miller, and thousands of others are still trying to overturn. Why? Money and racism.

May 16, 1918: Congress passes the Sedition Act, making it illegal to criticize the government during a time of war. It was repealed 2 years later, due to heavy criticism and blatant unconstitutional standing. Trump is attempting to revive its spirit, to silence anyone who opposes him. Fuck Trump.

I think Pete Buttigieg loves his husband and kids and that he lives a "heteronormative lifestyle" because he, personally, enjoys the idea of settling down with a nice guy and raising kids together, and this is fine

Mar 15, 2008: Deciding that laws treating people differently due to sexual orientation need to be held to a higher judicial scrutiny, the California Supreme Court rules that the existing law barring same-sex couples from marriage are unconstitutional for the state. Same-sex marriages began June 16.

Today marks four years since the horrific and racist mass shooting at Tops in Buffalo stole 10 innocent lives.   I joined the community to pay tribute to the lives we lost and everyone impacted. I'll always stand with these New Yorkers as they continue to heal.

May 13, 1985: Over 500 cops converge on a Philadelphia home to arrest members of MOVE, a black liberation group. Inside: 7 adults, 6 kids. Police gassed, shot 10,000 bullets, & eventually air-bombed the house. They let it burn for 90 minutes, killing all but 2 children & destroying 61 other homes.

American political leaders visibly represent to children what is possible, rewarded. Luckily, their hope is bigger than old fears. Forcefully shoving apartheid upon them will only ever be temporary.
