I still can’t believe Susan Collins put out an ad in Maine demeaning loggers. Who’s next, lobstermen? Lighthouse keepers? Blueberry farmers? Maple syrup makers?
No one seems to be talking about the new format here on BlueSky. Or is it just my iPad being weird? The font is so tiny it’s giving me a headache. Any way to fix it?
I wrote about the influence credit cards have on the restaurant industry, and how it increasingly feels like if you don't have the right card, you can't get into the cool restaurants (and how swipe fees contribute to the fact that you can't afford it anyway) www.weareravenous.com/restaurant-c...
HI FRIENDS PLEASE SHARE TO HELP ME REACH COOL FOLKS!

TIL from the mid-18th century until 1945, the de facto currency of Ethiopia was the 1740–80 Maria Theresa Austrian silver thaler
Then their use was abolished in 1945 and they became plentiful jewelry

This is a thread of memes about Kash Patel’s defense of bestiality sent to me by current and former FBI employees. Thank you for your attention to this matter. 🧵 1/
Superb exposition from William Pettigrew of how slave trading (let alone the whole plantation complex that depended on it) was “enmeshed in the processes that produced the nation we know today”. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/comm...
This is a big one: Brown University is searching for the next director of the Simmons Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice.
Please help us identify excellent candidates to lead this signature program into the future.

There was a whole huge national tamale craze around 1900. @anchistorian.bsky.social had a good column about it a few years ago:

One of the lesser-known fantastical creatures I talked about last week at @laworldcon.bsky.social was the bonnacon. It appears in medieval bestiaries as a bull-like creature with horns curved back on themselves and therefore useless to protect itself. Instead, it expels flaming poop in defense.
One of the best parts of being a historian?
Changing my mind.
Sometimes one letter or one newspaper article sends me back to rethink everything I thought I knew.
That's not failure.
That's good history. 🗃️
I recently finished knitting a baby blanket. For a decent section of it, I listened to Olivia Waites's NOBODY'S BABY. My card for the parents includes the following two quotes (yes, I have the ebook, too — it's *good*).
Please share! A rare PhD studentship @kingshistory.bsky.social *fully* funded by @slaveryinwar.bsky.social to work with myself and Maeve Ryan, supported by a broader community of experts in Caribbean history, transatlantic slavery, and the history of war. www.kcl.ac.uk/study/fundin... 🗃️
In the realm of questions posed during Senate hearings, this one from Ossoff -- "Isn't it humiliating to be unable to answer this?" -- ranks right up there with "Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?"
OSSOFF: Who won the 2020 election?
CLAYTON: Uhm, you know, I'm not going to do this with you
O: This is a job interview. You have an obligation to be honest with the committee. Who won the 2020 election?
C: I'm not gonna get into that with you
O: You're not being honest or forthright
C: ...
Hey friends, it’s that time of year. I teach high school science including bio, advanced bio, and infectious diseases & global health! I share most things with my department. There are some dream items on here I don’t expect to get, but anything helps! Thank you! www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/...
I mean, we know why, but it should be articulated:
It's because Trump is incapable of seeing other humans as people. He lacks any Theory of Mind, and is only capable of understanding humans in terms of what they will do to benefit him something. Otherwise he has no concept of humanity.
Trump just delivered his first speech after the death of his allegedly dear friend Lindsey Graham, which happened less than 48 hours ago. He didn't mention him once. RIP.
All the Enola Holmes movies AND The Other Bennet Sister KEEP saying "please come with my husband and I" etc, literally every time. Not just Kitty and Lydia either but all of the educated people.
They're delightful shows and movies. Why are they doing this to me?
I'm starting a rumor. He was murdered and they are replacing the carpeting and subflooring to get rid of forensic evidence.

A timely and detailed account by Ehlimana Memisevic of how central genocide glorification remains to Serb secessionist politics in Bosnia, and why any meaningful sense of 'reform' must include dealing with the crimes and horrors of the country's recent past. www.justsecurity.org/146250/srebr...
The quick resegregation of higher education is particularly pronounced.
In 1951, in the case of McKissick v Carmichael, the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals compelled the UNC Chapel Hill School of Law to admit 4 black students.
In 2025, they admitted 5.

When people want to do a discourse on technological progress they point to the train or the telegraph, but to my mind those pale in comparison to the potato.
I wrote about the White House UFC cage match, including Josh Hokit calling Michelle Obama a man.
As we turn 250, America is celebrating the worst it has to offer.
