We need to calm the flood-drought climate whiplash 🌦️ In the national conversation around climate resilience, Britain’s water crisis is almost always framed as two separate emergencies.  [Continued👇] Images: [1]-Cerib/Adobe Stock, [2]-Andee/Pexels/Canva

Let’s eradicate our life support systems – that’ll teach the liberals! It's not just about giving destructive industries what they want, important as this is. The likes of Trump and Bolsonaro will kill the planet out of a vengeful desire to hurt. My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The trade unions resisting a political donations cap in the UK are ragged-trousered philanthropists. Thanks to their delusion that a system allowing limitless donations enhances their power, they're in danger of handing the country to the far-right parties that billionaires support. Usual hand-wringing about returning to division and inaction, not getting the same opt-outs etc… but arguments to rejoin trump those what-ifs. Going it alone in a world dominated by Putin, Trump and China is strategically idiotic and economically ruinous. Shaking your head at that is red-flag-dim.

George Monbiot explains why the UK should rejoin the EU, "There's a reason why Russia tried to intervene in the Brexit vote, they knew that it would harm the UK and the EU if we left" "They were very clear about that and boy have they been proved right"

On Question Time last night, I talked about the extractive economic model that has left Wales - and many other nations - impoverished *because they were so rich in resources*. You can see the problem simply by looking at the map: the infrastructure looks like a drainage system.

The threats to our resilience are the same as the threats to our democracy: corporate lobbyists shaping policy, with dire consequences for our ability to withstand crises. Burnham seems to want to change this. But is he aware of scale of the task? My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

In terms of land use, the problem is animal agriculture. With a just transition to plant-based agriculture, and replacing biofuels with agrivoltaics, there would plenty of land to feed 8 to 10 billion humans a delicious, nutritious, and diverse plant-based diet. ourworldindata.org/land-use-diets

ourworldindata.orgIf the world adopted a plant-based diet, we would reduce global agricultural land use from 4 to 1 billion hectaresWe could reduce the amount of land used for grazing and croplands used to grow animal feed.

Why do Labour let the Tories and Reform push their "Welfare OR strong defence" trade off without countering with a "Brexit or strong defence" trade off? "We can increase defence spending to 3% and later 3.5% of GDP by reversing Brexit, without cutting welfare or raising taxes".

A billionaire can get what they want with one donation to a political party. The rest of us must fight for years to get even the most basic rights recognised. Money destroys democracy, more than any other cause. The first step towards a better world is to stop the rich buying political outcomes.
