I’ve been battling Himalayan Balsam for years and I’ve never seen an outbreak like Warleigh Nature Reserve! Every time we cleared a patch we’d find a far bigger and considerably worse patch behind. Come help us! protect.earth/events #invasivespecies #biodiversity #riverrestoration #climateaction

First wave is bezerker. We slash our way in with brush hooks, because it’s mixed up with bramble and stinger so we need the access. Second wave of hooks drag it into piles. Hand pullers then come and pick longer stems and stick those in piles. Piles and stems regrow, so we revisit next month

Just slashing isn’t the worst. These plants have been growing since mid April so getting in there and cutting them to the ground severely limits how many seeds they’ll put out. Some will die, some will be covered in cuttings and mulched, some will flop out a few seeds but not the full 3,000.

I think sometimes we look at these problematic species and assume by default they're impossible to shift, then get overwhelmed and give up. The fact these are annual turns that into a completely different prospect - thanks for sharing this, great cause for hope (and action).

We were clearing today - a Riverside unimproved meadow. It's been taken over since 2021 by bramble & balsam. I find the bramble seems to hold the seeds when the river floods, and then the balsam hollows out the bramble as it spreads. This year particularly bad!

It's a nightmare. But also a good excuse to get some great people together. Swings and roundabouts! A charity local to us has just announced they've cleared one of the tributaries to our river. So it *is* happening slowly!

These areas we found have been abandoned for decades, not grazed or managed for long enough the bare field turned into those trees. The balsam has been climbing up from the river all that time. We’re pushing it all back to the river, then we take to the water!! bsky.app/profile/phil...

Looking for donations to get @protect.earth a paddleboard. I’ve been researching for hours. This will get the job done (stable, lots of cargo space) to carry gear and collect rubbish whilst slashing balsam from the Avon. wavesupboards.com/en-gb/produc... Please donate here: protect.earth/donate

I have never encountered any, but Himalayan balsam seems like a strong candidate for World's Worst Herbaceous Invasive. We should applaud those who are taking it on. 🌍🌰
