This part in particular is so 🔥🔥🔥 "Usefulness itself is not a sufficient criterion for whether something is good. Slavery and child labor are strictly speaking useful, but many societies have strict rules against those since they are also deeply exploitative."

I can't get over how happy this photo makes me! Ten (from Singapore) and David (from Ireland) have been responding to my newsletter coding questions for YEARS and realized they were both in Japan while answering this past week, and met up! I *love* seeing these kinds of connections happen!

We did! Thanks @davidfitz.dev again for making time!

Didn’t have a great view of the eclipse, but did see lots of asteroids in the shower. Took this pretty cool photo of the stars too. You can zoom in so far and even see different coloured ones! Hope compression doesn’t ruin it! It looks black, but zoom in!

I honestly think AI would be like 50–80% less popular if men already gave compliments to each other and didn't need a machine to do it.

🎉 new post! Dynamic Colour Schemes With Modern CSS What magical CSS can we use to create not just a quick and dirty colour palette, but a whole colour scheme? Anogulous? Complementary? Triadic? It's all here! https://www.alwaystwisted.com/articles/dynamic-colour-schemes-with-modern-css 🙏🖤

People love RSS for the same reasons hikers love a good path. It isn't the packed dirt or gravel they're fond of, but the view it takes them through.

If I’m keeping score correctly, so far the AI revolution has given me: - considerably worse software than before - considerably more expensive devices to run that software - considerably less opportunity to make the money needed to buy those devices

Wanna get freaky with some CSS? @kilianvalkhof.com shows you the bones of getting creative coding going just with CSS!

This post didn’t do as well as I had hoped (it has so many cool looking demos and a nice narrative flow!) It didn’t get picked up by enough folks to drive meaningful traffic. Is it too soon or too in-depth for most devs to be interested in it? Kind of like my post on prefers-reduced-data.

I’ve officially resigned as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience. It used to be a reputable journal, but became a case study in how forced automation destroys academic integrity. 👇

Suddenly remembering when I got blocked on Twitter for telling someone at Google that deprecating alert() from the platform was magical thinking.

I fucking love this. The intersectional value of riding a bike. Thanks for your work @cathytuttle.bsky.social.

I ❤️ my volunteer work w/ DeFietsmeesters.nl, teaching mainly adult immigrant women, most who have never biked before, how to bike + the rules of the road in the Netherlands during a 10-session course. We start in parks or car-free spaces. Today a group went for a ride out on the road. So inspiring!

Totally agree. They’re going to sell making your website ready for agents as the new SEO. But then no one will have to visit your site. I used to love the web. It was useful, exciting, creative, a community, and I could get paid for joining in. That’s feeling impossible now. Fuck Google. Fuck AI.

“On Google declaring war on the Web” https://tante.cc/2026/05/20/on-google-declaring-war-on-the-web/ > This is a literal revolution but one against the participatory web, against us: The goal is to take away the web and guide people into Google’s abstraction on top of it.

There's been a quiet discourse among creators about this for quite some time, but it's no longer that quiet. I hate what AI is doing to the internet. Yes, it has its upsides. But the downsides outweigh those IMO. I have my own thoughts and feelings about the state of things that are still brewing.😞

Heartbreaking. And a wake-up call. It is no longer about being difficult to find a way to sustain yourself through your work online. It is no longer sustainable to keep a website up now. Axel has done so much for the web and all of us. Buy one of his books if you can. We've learned so much from him.

Everyone talks about craft and opinionated design, but as soon as Spotify drops a fun app icon, those same people freak out. The temporary icon is great. You know you’ve made something great when people have extreme reactions to it. Never aim to please everyone.

1/ I’m still processing what’s going on in tech at the moment. I used to feel at home in that world. It used to feel incredibly creative and positive. Now it’s increasingly full of bugs, dark addicting patterns and AI slop. 2ality.com

still not quite over the fact that i watched 15 year olds get sued for millions of dollars for downloading twelve songs and now we all have to accept AI slop because every tech company in the known universe decided that IP laws don't exist now that they're inconvenient for them

Genuine question: is AI making the web more insular? Hearing from various education content creators, and people who run communities, that numbers are down. Is AI giving answers so easily that people aren’t visiting sites, and therefore not interacting with the community?

I don’t even mean this as an “oh no, their numbers are down” issue, but as an “oh no, is the web becoming a place where you no longer communicate, you just use AI as a tool to do your intending for you”?

TIL crows only *look* black to us — they’re actually very colorful in ways human eyes are unable to perceive. 🤯 Remember that next time people can’t see your “colors”. Some colors just require different eyes.

Years ago a backend dev pulled me aside after my code review meeting and warned: "If management knew you were focusing this hard on accessibility, they'd tell you to stop." I said: "I'm not gonna tell them. Are you?" He didn't. We kept going. You don't always need permission. #a11y
