1/x In the 1840s, a lame American naval officer, grounded at a desk in Washington, cut weeks off the world's ocean voyages without inventing a single machine. His raw material: a warehouse of logbooks nobody had ever read. Matthew Fontaine Maury, Pathfinder of the Seas. A 🧵 #maritimehistory

My upgraded #Vodafone internet is glacial (4G backup). Talk to chatbot on my PC and it's useless, with an idée fixe I must be asking for a refund. Later decide to try again, happen to connect from my phone. Chatbot is helpful, quickly finds correct human, problem fixed. Wondering why the difference.

Not sure if someone's said this but Vance's criticism of Pope Francis is more interesting and less crazy than it's been reported. Francis' statement was the sort of thing Jesus would have said but not the basis of anything the church has believed, ever. Vance was right to say the pope should ...

... be careful when making theological statements, he was right VPOTUS should be careful when speaking on public policy. The most interesting thing here is how close Vance came to an attack on Trump, who is famously careless about what he says as POTUS. Is he positioning for a post-Trump GOP?

There's much discussion as to how many seats Pauline Hanson's One Nation will get in the South Australian election. But nearly all PHON senators have been opportunists who abandoned the party during their first term. The time to worry might be when that stops happening.

The Trump battleship plan is obviously insane but I'm wondering whether there's any way to justify a surface combatant substantially larger than Ticonderoga class, say 20,000 tons. We'd need to identify a capability it's hard to fit on a smaller vessel. ...

... For as long as needed all the power on the ship that usually makes it go instead goes to recharge the railgun. What else does this ship need? A modest VLS, say 64 cells. All the usual rubbish like a towed array and a helo hangar. Some small calibre guns. ...

A radar, let's say SPY-6. A short-range self-defence system, say RAM. Nope, I still can't justify 20,000 tons. The dream might be to emulate the B-70 Valkyrie: US builds 6 XB-70s as prototypes, USSR builds 2500 MiG-25s to shoot them down, US cancels B-70 program.

... Something that complicates an enemy's planning. The only such candidate capability that's obvious to me is an unreasonably powerful electromagnetic gun. We need *lots* of electrical power, hence the need for a large platform (hope this is true). ...

Australia didn't become independent all at once. But the single most important event was ratification of the Westminster conference, 73 years ago today. After this Britain can't make legislation for Australia, and Australia has its own ambassadors and foreign policy. #notfederation

Trump has asked for soldiers who agree with him and have a particular look he thinks desirable to be seated for the cameras. He's basically one step from creating the guards regiment of Frederick the Great, where all the soldiers were tall and had moustaches.

In the West institutions draw sharp boundaries. To pass this point you must have a ticket, or must buy the goods you have selected. In Korea things bleed more. Here is a shopping mall, that's a piece of another shop and those people are buying ice cream and sit over here but in between...
