Thank you Brazil! Frankly I'd given up on this one and accepted that Brazil was going to elect their own Trump Jr goblin, but this just goes to show that I was super wrong and we absolutely should never surrender.

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

Views on content on the internet are *global*. Remember how David Hasselhoff was huge in Germany but nobody cared in the US? It’s like that on a massive scale.

I'm enjoying Mike Flanagan's Carrie series (couple of episodes left), though I have to say that the Emaline thing was so blatantly set up that I thought they might be messing with me and somehow *not* do the obvious. Kinda disappointed that it wasn't a fake-out, TBH.

Really nice-looking trailer. It doesn't tell me anything about what that game would've been other than "another Mass Effect," which is neat, but there's no hint of what gameplay would've been like except maybe more melee-focused. It does make me want that Mass Effect TV series, though.

Usually when a studio like BioWare shuts down it's sad but not a total loss because you could be confident that the talent there will go on to do great things elsewhere. Now? With so many laid off in recent years, there's nowhere for them to go. People go to other industries, and gaming loses out.

I bet morale on those teams is sky-high right now.

EA has confirmed that DICE and Respawn are working on a new project together, adding more fuel to rumors about Star Wars: Battlefront 3. https://bit.ly/3U5mqVO

Absolutely baffling that you'd just *close* one of the most storied developers in gaming history. Not even sell it for a song to another company that might actually want it? Even the name isn't worth anything next to whatever ghoulish tax writeoff you can get by just burning it to the ground?

Man, I don't want to disparage anybody's work, but with 95% of the stuff in this Steam Next Fest batch, I honestly do not know why they even bothered to put it up on Steam. No one is going to buy it, so what is the point? How do you hope to make any money from this?

I totally get and respect wanting to tinker and make a game just as a hobby. But if I were to do that I don't think I could ever actually ask people to pay for it, knowing what they could be playing instead, unless I was confident it was a fantastic idea for a game.

An $1,800 console really would be something. Maybe you make an argument for it if it comes with a year of Game Pass Ultimate, taking it down to... like $1,600. Still oof. Even if it finally made good on all of the Xbox One's media center promises, it'd still be a very expensive device.

At that price I'd be very much sitting this one out, I think - and that's as someone who just bought a Steam Machine, which is by no means a bargain-priced thing. I do already own an expensive PC that will handle anything the next generation throws at it, though, so it's not a tough call for me.

Last month we lost our jobs. This month we made new ones. Introducing X BUTTON: an independent gaming network from three ex-IGN employees. A new weekly Nintendo podcast! A new weekly video game podcast! And that’s just the start, but we can’t do it without your help! www.patreon.com/cw/XButtonShow

Oof, apparently Activision made a lot of outlets agree to a Call of Duty embargle that extended *beyond the launch of the campaign?* When I was at IGN I set a policy of refusing anything like that. Especially with something like CoD where you can finish the campaign in a day, it makes no sense.

Dunno what they put in this year’s flu/COVID shot but it has laid me flat like nothing since ‘22. Got a total of 30 min sleep last night because I was freezing under my comforter, and now I’m still awake for some goddamn reason.

Five years after Windows 11 launched I can *finally* move my taskbar to the side of the screen instead of the bottom. Now I just have to reprogram several years of muscle memory and habit.

I had to open up my Steam Controller because the battery stopped working (just needed to be reseated) but that reminded me that I had a 2015 version in a box. Dug it out, plugged in the dongle, and Shazam: up and running (after connecting with USB for pairing). My family’s going to hate this thing.

Having no right thumb stick and no D-pad was a *choice.* Also putting all the buttons in the middle. Also replacing the batteries (which had begun to leak after 10 years in a box) was a bitch - good luck doing that without instructions! But I’m gonna have fun messing with it.

The silver lining of this is that, just like how piracy forced everything to become easily available online, you're going to see just about every classic game available on just about every platform. If some rando can do it overnight, companies are leaving money on the table not doing it themselves.

kotaku.comVibe-Coded Browser Ports Of Games Work Perfectly, UnfortunatelyCall of Duty: Black Ops, Halo: CE, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Skate 3 and many more titles have been decompiled and ported to web browsers overnight

I've heard a few interviews with Hasan Piker and he seemed thoughtful and interesting, and then I watched a few minutes of his stream and holy shit is he annoying. That said, so is literally everybody who talks into a microphone for 3+ hours every day.

I've been watching his stream of the El-Sayed vs Rogers debate for 30 minutes and at no point did I not want him to shut the fuck up and let me hear what they're saying.

When Pete Hegseth is executed for his numerous war crimes (including but not limited to hundreds of murders on boats in South America and over 100 Iranian schoolgirls) I do not want to watch. I just want to know it happened.

Rewatched WandaVision and Agatha All Along more or less back to back, and dang if those aren’t some good, weird, fun, well-done shows that sprinkle in some action around the character development rather than the other way around.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: How do you define socialism personally? JD VANCE: I think in reality what it actually means in the American context is you want to replace American workers with foreigners workers, and you want boys to play in girls' sports

Hopefully they'll be able to bring back the whole team and keep doing great work. Seems like EA must not have greenlit a budget for a full Zero Company sequel, which is disappointing but foreseeable given its new owners.

Stephen Totilo@stephentotilo.bsky.social

BREAKING: Star Wars Zero Company studio Bit Reactor has brought some of its furloughed workers this week. Most of the studio was furloughed a few weeks before launch Over half of the studio is now back, a source told me. The rest remain furloughed www.gamefile.news/p/star-wars-...

There's certainly an appeal to being able to jam out a game prototype with prompts, but it's a pretty damning indictment that the trailer for this shows someone creating an incredibly bland, uninspired game that has no reason to exist. Making something worth playing would still be incredibly hard.

Dan Marshall@danthat.bsky.social

The video advertising Unity's ew AI-driven autocomplete game maker has 'Mari' who has a game idea they "always wanted to make" and that idea is "Space Corridor" and it looks like this, and that's the strongest argument I can think of for keeping game dev out of the pro-AI crowd's hands.

If Rockstar *didn't* pay for South Park to make GTA 6 coming out in November a reoccurring gag they sure did luck out. Because otherwise no one would know that GTA 6 is coming out in November.

I'm not super far into GoW E-Day yet but at some point there has to be a reference to Master Chief and/or Brotherhood of Steel power armor, right? Can we not at least get the good aspects of consolidation along with the apocalyptic?

Whoever did the default mouse/keyboard bindings in Gears of War is a full-on troll. All the actions about jumping are bound to control and all the stuff about getting low and taking cover is bound to the space bar.

This game makes a pretty big deal about giving you your big, bulky COG armor, which is silly because as far as I can tell it makes absolutely no gameplay difference vs wearing civilian clothes.

Oh good, they invented the chainsaw bayonet even though melee attacks were already extremely effective. But this makes more blood/goo squirt out in the process so let's do this.

Look if I wanted to play with a bunch of assholes I’d just play online.

When I was a kid we had game controllers with buttons clearly labeled as "Start" and "Select." Now we have "Y'know, the one with the lines" and "Y'know, the one with the squares."

Okay, once I sat through the ~15 minutes of pointless babbling the combat is a lot of fun. Definitely gonna be mashing that skip button whenever people start talking and maybe fire up that VR mod next time.

Trying out Ace Combat 8. Never played one of these before but I’ve heard good things! Do I need to pay attention to the story? Based on the intro, it seems… odd and boring? They definitely don’t start this action game with a bang.

If they never made another video game I would still die without having played all of the good video games. Same is true of movies and TV and music and *especially* books.

It's a little funny to me that this is viewed as a big pro-consumer thing (which it kind of is) rather than a frankly brilliant effort to transition people away from discs and toward digital-only libraries.

Eurogamer@eurogamer.bsky.social

Xbox's disc-to-digital feature rolls out for Series consoles and Xbox One, allowing you to digitise your game-disc collection. https://bit.ly/4iXlDjD

The loudest opponents of a new disc-less console are those who have a big stack of discs. If you let them convert those to digital licenses, you cut the vocal opponents down to those who want to buy more discs, which (I'd guess) is at least half it not more.
