Ezra Klein is reasonably well informed on climate, but I was pretty shocked by his failure to press Jensen Huang on why exactly the need for more data centers justifies building a lot more fossil fuel infrastructure. He makes a very silly surgical metaphor that Klein didn't challenge.

Likewise, in Brad Plumer's article on Chris Wright, he's given the last word to make the dubious claim that “the biggest innovations the rest of my lifetime in energy are almost certainly going to be in oil, gas, and coal, because they are what matter.”

We've fallen a little behind 2023 and 2025 in the last couple days after about a month of daily records. We'll see what the rest of the year holds.

This is a really terrific accomplishment, and I’d think that doing this routinely would improve hurricane intensity forecasting significantly.

Through extraordinary efforts, @windbornewx.bsky.social successfully navigated a controllable balloon above powerful Typhoon Dolphin, descended into its eye, then collected multiple vertical profiles as we circled inside its eye. A first of its kind type of hurricane data collection.

Katie Martin should definitely get an Oscar, but maybe time for new leadership at Interior? “President Donald J. Trump is an expert builder who fixed the Reflecting Pool permanently before deranged people vandalized it,” Katie Martin, an Interior Department spokeswoman, said earlier this month.

Between the Covers is always worth listening too, but if you only listen to one episode this year, make it this one. The conversation in the last third about the real lessons of the split left of the 1930s is so much deeper than the usual gloss.

... modulates the storm track position over Europe and thus also patterns of strong wind frequency and cloudiness. This should help system planners think about the need for electrical and thermal storage of various durations over the coming decades.

We uncovered some important subtleties in the available analyses of future wind and solar potential and generation and their biases during the historical period, and some interesting patterns of variability associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation...

So proud!

Congratulations Rosa Kirk-Davidoff on an amazing thesis defense on the positive role of nurse shrubs on Jeffrey pine seedling survival and growth in the eastern Sierra, which she passed with flying colors. The field photos are from YESTERDAY when she came to help us get trees in the ground 😂.

One of the many great things about The Power Broker is the history of objections to car-oriented development. Already in the late 1940s people were saying it would be cheaper and better to build more transit in NYC.

It was a pleasure and a privilege working with James Wilczak, Hannah Bloomfield, Justin Sharp, and Cameron Bracken on this paper. We reviewed the literature on #Dunkelflaute, and approaches to managing them in renewables-dominated electrical grids. pubs.aip.org/aip/jrse/art...
