It is funny having a PM who actually has an idea of how to do politics and wants to do something with the country. If Burnham finds a way through the current challenging economic/fiscal moment he has all the tools to be, shockingly, good at the job.

I know Burnham has his flaws, may well come unstuck etc but a lot of the right-wing reaction to him is "how dare you do politics, that's so unfair!"

Not to open oneself up to accusations of being right-wing, but a minimum wage of nearly £30,000 a year and a higher rate tax bracket of £50,000 does look a little off

This is just the maddest argument. These people would trap us in poverty to keep a decade old commitment, which no one ever actually made, to an electorate which no longer exists.

This went on for the rest of the full hour, at which point the BBC apologised for having to go to the weather and urged viewers to follow continuing live coverage on iPlayer. Forty-one minutes of unfiltered, unchallenged propaganda by a far right party with 8 MPs, now third in the polls. Discuss.

Alex Andreou@sturdyalex.bsky.social

BBC News just interrupted its coverage to go, live, to Nigel Farage - a man with no contitutional standing in our setup - responding to the budget - a document which nobody has seen yet. WHY

💯The case for democracy is not that voters are always right, or wise, or good. It's that they can correct their mistakes. That's why it's so dangerous to have billionaires controlling the media or regulating the flow of information. It shuts down the immune system of democracy.

Rob Ford@robfordmancs.bsky.social

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

Reform UK Oxford will host a talk in November criticising "DEI" by the Nathan Cofnas, who describes his belief in + commitment to biological racism as "race realism", writing "in a meritocracy, blacks would disappear from almost all high-profile positions outside of sports and entertainment”.

I think the fact he’s announced it and there’s been so little substantive pushback suggests it will not be that unpopular? He is also being very clear about the intent of this policy and, frankly, making it much more difficult to argue against by pinning the flag to social care.
