The Witness Tree | Daniel Bachman Check out my new multimedia documentary project The Witness Tree. The album was created using biodata sonification of 16 remarkable trees from all around Virginia who have lived through significant moments in history or climate driven disasters.

The Witness Tree is also a full-length documentary film that you can check out at YouTube. This film features interviews from historians, scientists, artists, social workers, & activists, giving a lot more context to some of the locations I worked with than I could ever do through audio alone.

My new fretless guitar is coming this weekend and I'm so excited to adapt some of these ballad melodies to that thing. This "silver dagger" one really haunts me.

Daniel Bachman@danielbachman.bsky.social

Working on one of the best singers in the folklore society, Ruby Bowman of Laurel Fork VA. Her version of The Silver Dagger has one of the more unusual melodies out of all the ballads in this collection. The aluminum record is a little rough at the beginning of this one but its really excellent.

Before Aldona and I had any luck with support from the humanities orgs and getting the folklore society revived, Rhizome was supporting our research. I don't know of another arts space in the US supporting everything from local avant garde music/art to independent scholarship.

Ive said it before but I think we should talk more about early christian zionism in colonial America/Virginia during the early 18th century. The English/Germans that settled here in Madison co brutally ethnically cleansed the Manahoac people here, then named the valleys & towns Hebron, Syria, etc.

This is reporting from The Guardian. I want you to imagine if a Palestinian said this about Jewish people. So much to unpack here.

My new favorite music to work or write to during the day is stacking as many free phone apps for oscillator/tone generator/shruti box apps that I can at the same time and just letting them roll into each other.

Our first online event for the Folklore Society is this Thursday “An Evening With Nat Turner”. Who was Nat Turner, & how did he become an icon of revolution/resistance all over the world? Hear from Turner descendant Bruce Turner & co clerk Rick Francis as they explore the oral & material history.

Don't forget to register for our Evening With Nat Turner event, 10/29 7-8:30ish PM, that the Virginia Folklore Society has put together with the great great great grandson of Nat Turner, Bruce Turner, & the clerk of court for Southampton co, Rick Francis, I think its going to be a really good one.

thehandbasket.coRepublicans don’t have a Nazi problem—they are the Nazi problemA spate of recent revelations have shown the ideologies and their adherents are one and the same.

This week’s main story is about how more and more white nationalists, antisemites, and Nazi sympathizers seem to be integrating into the Republican Party, how some of them are currently running for office, and how old you can be for JD Vance to consider you “a very young boy.”

Just caught a clip of hoards of people cheering when trump removed the US from the Paris Agreement and it’s like watching a Nazi rally that will have greater and longer lasting consequences for all life on Earth. I really believe it’ll be one of those clips people look back on in disbelief.

Good amaranth harvest this year. I’m convinced this is a plant of the future. Really wish we could mill this stuff, but rn I pop it and add it to stuff like granola and it has more protein than tofu.

Just found a 2006 CDr with Knuck If You Buck on it. What an insane era, I remember that year that track was banned from all the school dances in every county around Fburg.

Got this one out while working outside this morning. Don’t see many of these Jack Rose Tequila Sunrise CDs on the internet. I had so much of this stuff that I’ve lost over the years. I heard the pic was some ancestor of Jacks in King George co VA.

Bevis is doing really good with the leash, still a healthy fear of cars though and won’t go near the road. Can’t wait for the winter time when all the snakes and ticks are gone and we can let her roam wherever she wants.

The Norm Macdonald doc is really sweet and funny. “In my opinion, if you're going to fight the war on terror, a good place to start would be this nation's haunted houses."

Honest question…as the USA becomes responsible for 70% of new planet heating emissions, why does the music press & other cultural media continue to stay silent. Is it the corporate consolidation & editors, or do people just not care? I keep up with this stuff, other countries are doing it different.

Kudos to NBC New York for saying it without equivocation: "The US is to blame for the world falling behind in the fight against climate change."

This week it’s all about the sweet potatoes we just harvested. These are an heirloom variety from Orapeake farms in Suffolk Va. “The Virginia Baker Sweet Potato was developed at the Virginia Agriculture and Trucking Station in Virginia Beach, Virginia in the mid 1900's.”

I can’t express how much I love growing our own potatoes and frying them up in a huge skillet.

Story from KOAT-TV in ABQ about the northern NM flooding. Amazed this is not getting more national coverage. www.koat.com/article/new-...

koat.comHistoric and catastrophic flooding hit New MexicoSevere flooding is impacting northern New Mexico as severe weather could impact areas near Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

After weeks of periodic heavy rains, the San Juan River system in CO and NM is in the middle of a truly historic flood that appears to be causing catastrophic impacts to the rural Four Corners region — the word needs to get out on how bad things are: balancedweather.substack.com/p/record-cat...
