They knew burning oil was making us sick and heating the planet — but lied to keep doing it. They knew plastic could get into our bodies — but increased plastic production >200X since 1950. There is no question Big Oil CEOs are mass murderers. The question is: Are Big Oil CEOs serial killers?

Center for Climate Integrity@climateintegrity.org

🚨"Internal memos among company scientists and executives obtained by The Times reveal that for at least half a century, the plastics industry has been aware of and concerned about the potential for microplastic contamination in the human body."

“I’m glad to see oil companies like Exxon acknowledging the threat this climate supercharged El Niño poses by ducking and defecting responsibility,” quipped McKay to Deadline.

Who faces the loses from ending fossil fuels? The rich: "In the U.S., 82% of the devaluation would hit the wealthiest 10% of households, and that loss... would amount to only 0.4% of the wealthiest households’ net worth." Big Money & the rich are blocking climate action for a rounding error.

"[Fossil Fuel interests] are trying to fool us because, for them, it is a bridge too far to agree to stop destroying the world and consequently make the rich less rich. No—we can’t make the rich less rich! That would be “degrowth,” a fate worse than climate change itself." - @doctorvive.bsky.social

"But as a trade-off it would also raise people’s real incomes, making the vast majority of us better off. In a decarbonized and electrified net-zero economy—quite aside from avoided costs of [extreme weather] and so on—we would be paying much less for electricity, heating, and transportation."

"All that said… it’s low-key absurd to argue for fossil-fuel phaseout only by pointing to economic co-benefits… Because here’s the thing: if we’re going to halt global heating we will need to phase out fossil fuels. And if we don’t halt global heating, much of the world will become uninhabitable."

"Nearly 93% of known plastic chemicals used to wrap food and make clothes, toys, and other common household and personal care products pose a high risk to human health" Plastic, mind you, is Big Oil's backup plan, on the off chance we decide to swap free solar energy for planet-killing fossil fuel.

"To be quite honest, this is a seriously concerning outlook." When @weatherwest.bsky.social says he's seriously concerned, you would be wise to listen. At least, read this 🧵⬇️

Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]

We just cracked the strongest El Niño in 1000 years (or ever?) but it’s just another day at the office for the Big Oil execs keeping us from using the abundant free solar energy that would stop this.

Guardian US@us.theguardian.com

The “jaw-dropping” El Niño currently heating up the planet has burst through the highest temperature ever recorded for the phenomenon, several months before its expected peak.

Essentially Exxon has just publicly announced their company’s entire business will end life as we know it on the planet within about 20-25 years. Maybe that’s why they did it. 3C by 2050 still seems “far off” & abstract for many. As opposed to the catastrophic 2C we’re facing more & more next yr..

"Fuck it. Just announce it. We own the Government and news media plus the NFL just started so no one's paying attention. Now let's hit the links."

Exxon is now expecting a 2.5 - 3C rise by 2050 But says f*ck you - we are just going to keep right on sucking up as much gas and oil as we can Because even though we know what's coming, we really don't give a sh*t www.reuters.com/business/ene...

Big Oil's body count FYI: 8+ million a year killed by fossil fuel air pollution (24,000 a day, 1 every 3.5 seconds) including 350,000 people in the US and 730,000 kids under 5 (2,000 a day) plus millions more per year killed by climate impacts (heat, drought, famine, wildfire smoke, etc) IYDKNYK

Honestly about as good a news lede as you can hope for in this time of polycrisis: "'Big Oil fucks more people every day than I can do in a lifetime,' said OnlyFans star Lily Phillips in a video called 'Body Count.'" 💫
