This person is supposedly Deputy Mayor material. Don’t get me wrong, I am glad I can freely post with this person blocking me, but don’t for a minute confuse him with someone who is thoughtful in his dealings with members of the public who have different demographics to him. #vanpoli

I’ve been looking for some more local (Canadian and Australian to a lesser extent) accounts to follow on Bluesky but 90% of the time when I click through to the profile, I find the majority of their posts are about American politics. There’s already too much of that here.

Are you a Canadian (and/or Australian) Bluesky account that does not post about US politics to the exclusion of other, more local topics? If so, please hmu. #bcpoli #cdnpoli #vanpoli #auspol

I know I keep beating this drum but BC could have woken up today with an NDP government still intact but a different Premier if only we were (wait for it)… more like Australia. #bcpoli

This is what I was trying to explain to my Australian parents. They still don’t understand. Why didn’t David Eby’s party Just Do Something before he plunged the province into a disastrous early election?

Counterpoint: Australia has had more periods of political instability — including prime ministers changing between elections — because the caucus can launch a coup of their own leader pretty easily.

Very interesting timing for this thread as I watched the stupidity of the BC Election from Australia.

Let me tell you a story about the politics of Australia: Over the last 28 years generally, but over the last decade particularly, I've done a lot of politics outside of Australia. Last week, an organisation I work with called me in for a meeting mostly among people like me around the world /n

And it will be on Eby’s head if that happens. Putting his party and ambition before that of the people of this province and its wellbeing is unforgivable. How dare he treat us like fools.

I just tried to explain BC politics to my Australian parents (who have their own state election next month) and I still can't get past the question "So why did he have an election when he didn't need one?" And this is in a place where Premiers get toppled frequently - often by their own parties.

So upsetting People voted NDP in 2024 for clear reasons Eby threw it all away intellectualizing and being a very poor politician Now NDP voters have nothing

David Eby’s gamble ended up in a catastrophic defeat for the B.C. NDP 😬 That was the worst political FAFO I have seen in a long time. 🤦🏽‍♂️ 🔗 Source: www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/bc...

OBAMA: The big trade war he's starting now is with that well-known evil empire: Canada. These are the people who gave us maple syrup and Martin Short.

Gonna be amazing to see 20 of these mRNA vaccines rolled out over the next years, dropping your cancer risk by 50%. And no one to the right of Al Roker will touch them.

I am angry there’s an election. But I’m even angrier that this paper is basically a Conservative Party mouthpiece now.

I have observed over the years that Aussies say “sorry” about as much as Canadians do. The only difference is when Aussies say it, they mean it.

This has saddened me so much this week. But the infuriating part is the focus on it being solely a political attack. Yes, Ms Haines is an MP, but more essentially, she is a female MP. And her attacker was a man.

Independent MP Helen Haines remains in a critical condition in a Melbourne hospital, more than two days after she was struck by a car outside her electorate office in Victoria's north-east. Follow updates in our live blog.

I was out #geocaching when I came upon this tiny, tiny flower most people would never notice. This is called the slender sun #orchid and it is native to Australia and New Zealand.

My thoughts on the Vancouver municipal election: congrats to Pete Fry. He has done his due and was absolutely the best candidate for Mayor. But as for council/school board/park board? Unfortunately Vancouver knows what a one-sided council brings. When there’s a majority, good ideas get squashed.

We had 4 years of this and Vancouver is not better off for it. We now are lurching into another 4 years of the same-but-different. I hope this council et al can be more balanced than the previous one but I am sceptical. There will be a correction after 4 years and Vancouver will once more suffer.

Another one of these Victoria (BC)? or Victoria (Australia) moments. This happened to us about a decade ago and it’s true, schools are desperately underfunded but I don’t blame the parents for that. Fund public education via taxation properly. Period. Free should mean free (to user).

ABC News Bot (unofficial)@abcnewsbot.bsky.social

A principals' association says Victorian schools will be made worse off by an education department directive to stress that contributions are voluntary in the public system.

Means-testing is the enemy. It's a trick — a sham. It erodes social cohesion. It stigmatizes. We must escape this notion of deserving and undeserving and drawing arbitrary lines that only serve to divide us. Instead, we should provide universally and tax the rich appropriately.

Visited the Melbourne Holocaust Museum today with my sister. It was painful, sad and moving. I was grateful to the teachers who brought their classes here to learn of this most shameful history. In the memorial room I found the name of my family member who escaped a camp. #holocaustmuseum
