In Lochiel, Arizona, where people have been resisting the construction of the border wall, one brave activist locked down to construction machinery—and Border Patrol drove it away with them locked to it. "We're taking you to the middle of nowhere where no one can hear you scream."

Max Granger@maxgranger.info

🚨 Latest from the border wall blockade: tree sit is still up, one land defender is locked down to machinery, Border Patrol has wrapped a Mylar blanket around them and is running the truck and pumping the blanket full of exhaust to try to gas them out, potentially killing them.

Once again, your "liberal" publications are the ones that launder eugenics and race science into the mainstream

if you're going to vibe code something i feel like you should at least write about it in your own words. unfortunately nobody seems interested in doing this

I do think we need a better critical culture around AI just solely because a lot of people are being forced to use it at work and don’t understand how it works. But also, I don’t think people who don’t give a shit need to hear about it from people who love it and think it’s their friend.

A systematic, critical understanding of history, especially the long history of technically skilled people either being used by elites or being blinded by their own high modernist ideology to do incredible harm, should in my opinion be a requirement of any technocratic profession

Am I missing something here? In what universe would an engineering student ever study history?! Do many history students study engineering?! I *enjoyed* history at school, and I was *good* at it. But no way would I ever have studied it at university.

genocide is not disturbing ‘content’ from which the spectator needs healthy boundaries. these are human beings making claims upon the rest of humanity. turning away may soothe the witness, but it does absolutely nothing for the person who cannot turn away from the bomb.

I want a theory of suffering that says: you are witnessing a genocide and it wounded you because it SHOULD wound you. the answer cannot always be to create enough distance that you can live normally again. sometimes the answer is to let that wound bind you to an obligation to act

It is really funny talking to my colleagues in computational biology who’ve had to rebrand their existing approaches as “Ai” to appease higher level management. Machine learning has been a part of biotech for over a decade and has its uses, LLMs have not really proven themselves.

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

I am becoming incredibly exhausted of this pattern: many people: "AI sucks!" Very Smart Person: ah but have you considered (distinct application of ML or statistical modeling that has no real relationship to what the tech industry is marketing as, and people broadly perceive as, "AI")

does anyone have a good article for laypeople explaining why the hugging face thing wasn't "rogue (autonomous) ai"
